I've never had a rat bite mine to the point of my snake being injured. I've seen a rat try to bite him, but when that happens, my snake squeezes tighter rendering the rat incapable of biting any longer. I've had a hard time getting my snake to eat by dropping the rat in my snake's cage. I've learned that he likes to hunt much better, so I put the rat in a small cage in the closet and let my snake go after him when he's ready.

Wow, does your snake actually eat that often? Mine is quite bigger at this point (over 4 feet), but I don't remember feeding him that often when he was younger either. I guess it depends on how big the prey is you're feeding your snake. I feed mine a small rat every 2 to 3 weeks. Then he's not as active during the winter, so sometimes he goes 2 to 3 months without eating. That's why I have a cage for the rats, in case I have to keep them alive for longer.

Nice Python! However, I recommend that if you feed live in the future, you stand by with hemostats. When mice/rats get crushed, their back legs kick and they can claw the crap out of your Royal. I use a wooden food skewer or hemostats (like long tweezers) in case the mouse/rat decides to impale my snake. One of my pythons refuses to eat frozen...
