I always wondered why Tippy Hedren (or why wasn't in the script better to say) didn't take the hand brake off once she stepped into that wagon & found no key? they were coming down a hill; so therefore if she had pulled out the hand brake, the car would've rolled down to safety isn't it!?

@tadsgirl Well, point taken. But they weren't even attacking the school. They went after the kids once they were outside. And besides that, why didn't the children walk calmly into town instead of running. You'll notice the birds attacked once the kids started running.
@JoeCoolFreeman - You are correct! But the scene wouldn't have been as dramatic. And let me tell you, that scene spooked me as a child. Although not as badly as the carousel scene in "Strangers on a Train".
@tadsgirl Haven't seen that movie. But in all honesty, and nothing against those who were scared by this movie and like it, I did not think this movie was scary. I thought it was stupid. The story is stupid. The writing is stupid. The characters are stupid. The concept is stupid. The cinematography is amazing and the effects are good for the time this movie was made, I'll give it that.
I love Hitchcock, don't get me wrong. But I thought this movie was his weakest by far.
@JoeCoolFreeman - A lot of it was the time. You kind of had to be there. Watching it now, it's not so scary. Back then and as a child, it was terrifying.
@evilgalorereturns Well, Miss Hayworth only told the children that it was a fire drill. The children were probably puzzled by her directions to go home if they lived nearby.
why would someone so stupid put like an entire school in danger by running into a swarm of killer ravens? they were safe in the school house! that's really stupid of the teacher and anyone else who came up with that stupid idea! don't you think?
@nicholaskingmequeen First of all, Melanie's concern was that the school had many windows and the birds could easily get in and trap the kids in the building. Second, they are running away from the ravens, not toward them. Third, have you ever even watched the movie!?
This is a great example of why we should never touch a master's piece of work, be it Hitchcock or Twain. They knew what they were doing and we're all just a bunch of amateur's wanting to steal the spotlight.
It's so obvious that there were no kids present when Suzanne Pleshette is supposedly talking to the class. The kids reactions feel like the work of a really bad second unit director. Stuff like that really dates the film.
It's interesting to hear the birds with music, and I think it fits quite good as well. But even so, one of the best things with the movie is the absence of music. This makes it different from other films, and in my opinion makes the film more intense and eerie. I think its better when all we hear during the exciting scenes is the chilling sounds of wings flapping and gulls screaming. So this movie is better off without music. But a well made and intresting video, though :)
@Sixpackman93: This is not a good video because the music is not timed to the scene. There is a video of the final climatic scene where there is symphonic score written especially for the scene. youtube.com/watch?v=Lw0FP9putKM
I actually think you did a good job with this. But it reminds me, when we were kids and saw this scene at the drive-in, we thought it was so funny. Kids being chased by crazy pecking birds. hahaha
You chose music that does not work and that is not edited to the film. The art of film composing is writing music to picture. You have to time the music to a split second (24 frames per second). If you simply plaster music that was not written for the scene hoping to undercover some unique way to view a scene, it will not work. Again, I wrote a symphonic score to two scenes and had a 95 piece full symphony orchestra record it. You judge for yourself. watch?v=6-CRkq5zjfI&NR=1
This part started a few minutes earlier. Tippi Hedren is sitting out in the playground. First there was just one or two birds, then the camera goes about the town; and when it comes back, there are a few more. The camera leaves agin, and when it returns, there are a few more, until there is a shitload of birds. One of the scariest movies ever made.
Take a look at my video of The Birds watch?v=6-CRkq5zjfI&NR=1. I recorded the last attack scene with a full size symphony orchestra back in 1992. Tippi Hedren called the score to her famous "thrilling" and "exciting". I met her at her Shambala Ranch back in 1993. I also scored the opening title with the same orchestra.
very cool experiment...I liked it. This is one of my all time fav. movies and I think partly because there was no music soundtrack to begin with...but you might be on to something...well done
Don't know if it's what you intended, but this shows me how rancid most film music can be, how it can ruin scenes. We are supposed to like the crap Williams and Zimmer and Horner and the rest write, and most use it as a crutch.
What makes movies like this special is that they don't tell us what to think and feel every minute with the soundtrack. Maybe the reason some dislike this marvelous movie, and 'No Country for Old Men', is because they don't have that crutch that weak audiences prefer...?
@dreemfinder Thanks for your comment. I DO know about Herrmann using not a traditional score but applying bird sound effects based on Hitchcock's suggestions. And I was not trying to demonstrate how much "better" this movie is with a score added to it. This was merely an experiment to produce a DIFFERENT (not better) outcome. Clever. But not as clever as Mr. Hitchcock, who knew that a musical score would only detract from the desired effect, and so used only electronically-produced bird sounds. It would appear that you proved him right.

@bubbawhale Ohhhh, I didn't know they could break windows lol! Usually when birds run into the windows at my house or school they fail; so bad. Or die from a broken neck! :P
@bigweeniegenie14 it wouldn't of been safe in the school there were too many windows they would have eventually broken in if you've seen the movie you should know they pointed that out
i love love love love love this seen in the birds, i always hav. i love hitchcock!!!!! this is my fav seen of all time. goes great with the music, but u just couldnt hear the silence of the seen that well, and that is a big part of that scene. all the silence. good though!
Heres a question.. Am I crazy or is there a few seconds missing from this movie. I distinctly remember the children leaving the school and walking very quietly with Tippi looking back slowly. Then the birds suddenly get spooked by something and THEN they attack.. yet everytime I watch this it never shows that clip..hmmm does anyone else remember that??
What if John Williams (Star Wars, E.T., The Towering Inferno) had composed this film? "
....Um it would sound like every other carbon copy, cookie-cutter, action music piece John Williams has composed.
Don't get me wrong, I love J. Williams, but let's face it, you can take a lot of his scores any interchange them with any other film he's done and the effect would be the same.
(Noteworthy exceptions would be Jaws and Schindler's List)
i would grab one of those birds and STRANGLE THE SHIT OUT OF IT. then throw it down to the ground and crush it till its no more than useless fuck. then rape it.
Um...Hitchcock doesn't use any musical soundtrack throughout the film on purpose. The children's singing (if you watch the whole scene, you'll have a better idea) and the sound of the birds is enough. No thanks.
did any one besides me notice that the kids the camera got a close up shot of weren't running down the hill to begin with? If you didn't notice, watch the school attack scene carefully.
Excellent choice -- it works. Of course, one of the things I love best about The Birds is its complete absence of musical scoring. But still -- excellent choice, good timing.
I always wondered why Tippy Hedren (or why wasn't in the script better to say) didn't take the hand brake off once she stepped into that wagon & found no key? they were coming down a hill; so therefore if she had pulled out the hand brake, the car would've rolled down to safety isn't it!?

(Noteworthy exceptions would be Jaws and Schindler's List)

i would grab one of those birds and STRANGLE THE SHIT OUT OF IT. then throw it down to the ground and crush it till its no more than useless fuck. then rape it.

whilst you got killed?

huh?

Um...Hitchcock doesn't use any musical soundtrack throughout the film on purpose. The children's singing (if you watch the whole scene, you'll have a better idea) and the sound of the birds is enough. No thanks.
aaronpolson 2 years ago
did any one besides me notice that the kids the camera got a close up shot of weren't running down the hill to begin with? If you didn't notice, watch the school attack scene carefully.
humps678 2 years ago
wouldn't it been easier to just keep the kids in school and wait for help?
The Birds would have been more destructive if they just craped on everyone.
Pigeon shit anyone?

There's something odd about how this movie was flimed...IDK mabye I'm just used to "now uh day" fliming.

The school looks so "ominous" to begin with! (reminds me of the "Bates" house in Psycho).
I like the "score", while she's warning the teacher, however, once they're all running outside, I think it's more suspenseful "without" it.

Excellent choice -- it works. Of course, one of the things I love best about The Birds is its complete absence of musical scoring. But still -- excellent choice, good timing.
