Just a quick point. It was the UK Channel 4 who produced the original Mini-Series which PBS showed later. Second Mini-Series Was co-produced by Channel 4 and Showtime, The Third was produced by Showtime only.
I will always love anything Laura Linney does, because of her "Mary Ann Singleton" on Tales of The City, everything she touches is magic. Thank you Armistead Maupin.
Chloe Webb aka Mona Ramsey didn't return for the sequel because she wanted more pay than the other cast members who were all paid equally. Marcus D'amico said that he felt "ambivalence" about returning as Michael Toliver in the sequel because he is a straight actor, so the producers chose someone who would wholeheartedly embrace the role. Republicans have made this type of show politically impossible to do today on 6/4/11 and they also want to get rid od Medicare & Social Security...ELITISM !
When I needed to get out of LA, the book and this series made me pick San Francisco. My very first weekend in the City I met Armistad Maupin - it was magic. So far I have lived here 10 years and the City still takes my breath away. Thanks for posting.
This series was/is masterful. Never have I seen anything to capture the spontaneity and depth of living in the City. I lived there for a few years, and this brings back the memory and flavor of all of it. One of the best series I've ever seen on television. Wish they would bring it all back one day.
This was a classic the instant it was filmed. It was masterfully, masterfully done and for that the world owes a debt of gratitude to Alastair Reid. I was still a young kid during the 1970's and I have to admit to a twinge of regret that I wasn't a young man able to flee to SF during that period. What a magically wonderful place it must have been.
Great tv show read the books years ago also have the dvds, on holiday at the moment and was looking for something to watch with my glass of wine can't tear myself away from it thanks for uploading.
This TV series helped me not only accept my own sexuality but come out to my mother. I was 23 when I had a chance to see this copied Tales of the city and my parter back then who used to live San Francisco asked me to visit there together. I still recall almost every thing I saw on that trip in there. The city has changed a bit but still an amazing place to be. I lost my partner last year but I still visit there to see his friends and share his memories.
It is what ya have to do sometimes...now that both of my parents are dead I reget several "actions" but still you have to LIVE YOUR LIFE NOT Their Life...anyone who wants to chat about such things feel free....Sincerely Tim
OMG, I officially love you right now! It has been forever and a day since I last saw this..when I was still in high school. Now I'm around MaryAnn's age and totally need to start having "Tales" of my own, fingers crossed. :-) BTW, is that Parker Posey?!
@jivillasenor It is parker posey. she's in the first here and there until the 4th episode i think. She also makes an appearance in more tales as well. I'm glad you are enjoying them! when i was 19, a friend and i drove down highway one in his 1955 mercedes for my first trip ever to San Fran. We read this whole series out loud on the way down in the car. I then spent the following 13-14 years living there! i too was in Love !!!!! (want me to up them and send you download links?) :) djcruMbs-
@B4UDSide Wow, that sounds like an amazing journey you had to SF! I can only imagine. How exciting. BTW, I would love to "Share" the videos with you, if it's not too much trouble. :-)
This series, "Northern Exposure" and "Due South" were absolutely brilliant shows of the 90's. I was living overseas at the time, and I saw each of them every week, in English with German subtitles!
You know I do agree that the last book was a little more sexual, but I do think there was a point behind it. The tittle of the last book is what its all about, Michael lived past the 80s with HIV (not an easy thing) and continues his life, this includes relationships and sex. I think its important to show this and without all the sex in the book, the last book would have betrayed the story
This series was orginally taped in 1993 and is based of the first book. In later years the second two novels were also turned into a series. Read the entire series, sooo worth the read, and yes Micheal Tolliver Lives is a little more sexual but gives the series the ending it deserved!
tales of the city, is it Armistead Maupins book? and this movie is relate to the book? pls I need ans answer couse Im readign his book and if this movie is same as the book then it will help me alot to understand, or else worthless to watch this movie for me :S. thank you
Give it another try. I wasn't really shocked, but went like 'erm... this is not what I remember the books to be' as well. But overall there aren't too many of these adult scenes and they stop around the middle/ two thirds of the book.
Thank you sooo much for uploading this. I've just finished 'Michael Tolliver Lives' and started re-reading the book series from the beginning, so this is a nice treat :)
I started reading Michael Tolliver Lives, but was bitterly dissapointed when it became a little too pornographic for my liking. Unlike the previous 6 books, I put it down and haven't looked at it since. Should I persevere, or is the whole story peppered with adult material?
no, Michael Tolliver Lives is not "peppered with adult material". It is actually quite good, though it is not the same as the Tales series. I like it but to those expecting the exact same vibe as the first book, I'd suggest they do just that - re-read the first book :-)
BTW, my fave in the series is Significant Others. So beautiful with the different types of relationships and emotions. I thought this is the one with most emotion.
I was 18 when it first aired on PBS. At that age and coming from my family, it was hard watching the entire series. It was a surprise to find it here. It really brought back a lot of memories. This was the first thing I had seen on tv that had a gay theme. I loved the characters then and I still do now. Thanks for posting this American Classic.
I know exactly what you mean! The later ones are great, and I love them too, but they don't have the same magical, almost eerie quality to them. I always think of the scene in Part 1 where Mrs. Madrigal hypothesizes that San Franciscans are all the reincarnated souls from the lost city of Atlantis, somehow drawn together -- and doomed to return to the sea together. How beautifully romantic is that idea?
@samiun2 i too fell in love with SF and i hadn't been there yet. was reading this whole series in the car as me and a buddy drove to the city for my first time! ended up living there for 13 years :) Glad everybody is enjoying the uploads! -djcruMbs=
@B4UDSide I LOVED the series, but it presents a very false image of San Francisco, Or, better stated, a San Francisco that no longer exists. People go to San Francisco hoping that everyone has their own little "Barbary Lane" but the city, which is essentially a glorified village, falls terribly short of that dream.
@B4UDSide hey thanks for the show, can you tell me order in which i can start to watch, cause for example there is tales of the city part1 chapter 1 there 2 of them so am confused a litttle if its no trouble.

This, the first Tales of the City had a mysterious, hypnotic dream-like quality I just can't put my finger on.
The ones that came later did not have that ambience. Can't explain it but I have felt it in a few other movies.
