Rolling Stone Magazine did a 100 Greatest Singers a few years ago. Marvin Gaye was 6th. You'll never convince that Elvis (3rd), Sam Cooke (4th) and John Lennon (5th) were ever better singers than Starvin' Marvin. I grew up listening to Marvin Gaye. The best pure singer I've ever heard. You know how they use machines today to clean up the singers. Never with Marvin. The pure soul sound right there.
@TheLuscious Rollingstone hasn't been a credible magazine since the mid 80's, and music is subjective. If someone thinks Elvis is better that's there preogative. It has no bearing on me or my taste. Marvin and Sam are transcendant singers, but Marvin has been my favourite artist since I was 15, that over half my life, so I'm biased.
@TheLuscious I saw that blasted list. Well, I do give Lennon his props, Sam was on fire also, but Marvin?! Marvin was a king, and he still is. Marvin & Bob Marley....Two Kings!
This was my favorite off the whole album. You right about it, it never gets or got air play. This jam captured the "new wave" sound with the synthesizer sound but keep it soulful, one of the best soul jams from the '80s.
I love Marvin Gaye :) Im 19 years old and i remember people in school used to make fun of me for liking him, Prince, MJ, Otis, Al Green, Teena, Aretha, etc...I just love listening to people like him...they're called LEGENDS
@CreativiDe992 That's all right,. You just know what real music is. I grew up listening to Marvin Gaye as a little boy. My mother had us way ahead of the curve.
"Now before you play the last side, are you fit enough to ride... I said yes!" NOW THIS is grown folks music! These youngsters better realize where true soul came from. This track is one of the baddest grooves on the planet! Marvin was so damn smooth. You will break yo neck rockin' to this joint! lol! "Oh baby, I'm not through yet This is one night honey, that you won't forget! Daaaaaayum! Just too many great verses in here.

GOD! I literally (and I almost never use that word) can't get enough Marvin. If there was a pill or injection called "Marvin Gaye" I would need several daily doses just to function. Actually, I might OD...but maybe not because like I said...I can't get enough.
This brings back solid gold everlasting memories, today's generation don't understand the fundamentals of obtaining natural talent like artists : Marvin,Teddy,Green,Vandross,White,Isleys,Temptations,O'Jays,George Clinton & Paliament Funkadelics,Wonder,Kc & The Sunshine Band,Franklin,Supremes,Gladys Knight, Khan,Labelle,Baker,Ohio Players,Lenny Williams,Issac Hayes,etc... I Can go on all day. (BTW im only 19; often im ridiculed for aquiring perfect taste in soul sensational music like this.)
Exactly. You have great tastes in music. Today's generation does not understand good quality music, and instead are fed today's junk. Classic music will never die.
@NIGHTWHMAN You are so right...I LOVED this song so much when Midnight Love was first released. I used to RUN to the radio when Tony Brown used to play this on WDAS in Philly !!!! He was the ONLY jock to play it...
This is real genius. Today's younger artists are jokes. They are already stars before they drop their first CD. Marvin, Teddy, Barry, Michael, and Luther are greatly missed .
@TheBigdaddy56 True 100%. The classic stars like Marvin and others had to work to get to where they are now. With today's stars, it's all about marketing an image, and throw talent out of the window. Classic music FTW!
It is, and its unfourtunate. In the industry today, talent is thrown out the window, and its all just about who is popular. I am 22, and there is no school like the old school.
@greenac88 True. I do like a lot of hip-hop from the 90's and some underground material from this decade but I've heard nothing that compares to that 70's soul R&B, particularly Marvin Gaye, except maybe The Beatles and Beethoven.
Yeah. No one can compare to Stevie Wonder. Other great legends are Earth, Wind and Fire, The Isley Brothers, Ohio Players, Kool and the Gang, Michael Jackson, I can go on forever.
@greenac88 Well...I think Marvin can. He's my undeniable #1 but Stevie and The Beatles are also way up there. After that (exclding hip-hop because than it gets real sloppy) Al Green, Ray Charles, Simon & Garfunkel, Otis Redding, Luther Vandross and even Brian McKnight are favorites of mine. I'm sure I'm missing some big ones. It doesn't really matter though because Marvin is all I need.
Good list. As for hip hop, I am more of into 90s era, since it grew up to some hip hop. I like Eazy E, Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Public Enemy, just to name a few. Today's hip hop to me is garbage.
@greenac88 Word. I like the 90's stuff as well and I also like SOME 00's stuff, especialy from th unerground. Yeah, popular music in general is prety bad nowadays. We used to have new musical genius' emerge every decade... now...well I don't even think one has come along in my lifetime (I was born in 1990).
@TheBigdaddy56 Don't forget Ray, Otis, Sam, John (Lennon)...well...I could go on forever listing the great artists that have passed...so I'll stop now.
@TheBigdaddy56 I'm 15 and just this whole week been off to shit and trust me I compeletly agree with you that mainstream is bullshit. This world is corrupt but when that day comes all of us who know music and not bullshit it will grant as a big ass speaker with some great music. This just made my life a little bit better and I'm white, lol.
@acedaface954 Thanks. People be bullshitting about my music sucks but themself don't hear their own music. For example if I tell a girl I wanna do her rough and shit in the bed she will freak out *not because I'm ugly, lol* but if Trey Songz say's that in his shit they don't hear it. They say artist have good voices, uhm autotune? They say they have good style. People are rocking tuxedos with big ass chains and sneakers? Man I wish I was 15 when this came out.
@Undergroundhiphoop those type of people are considered very close minded. Therefore they're more likely to stay away or be fearful of anything new or different. Talking to them is a lot like talking to a wall. I do what I can to not fight with them. Because in the end you won't anything out of it except for a headache. Lol
@acedaface954 Yeah headache I agree xD. I mean I love music because it actually changed my life, my way of thinking and seeing from certain perspectives so I take music some kinda what more serious than just listening to it. Todays artist doesn't even write their own things, don't use their own voice don't use nothing to actually be a musician. If let's say Lil Wayne could say "Music is my heart and my soul, more precious than gold" I would like him but not that much cause of what he's doing now
@Undergroundhiphoop I see your point but you have to understand that in a lot of cases some people are just not good at certain things. I mean you might be great at singing or rapping but not at forming words to create a song. Beyonce can sing and dance her ass off but can't write. Its just not her thing. Even choosing great lyrics is a talent. And rappers? A lot of elite MCs can freestyle for days on end but can't write music or select great production. continued...
@Undergroundhiphoop ...continued All these things is what makes you an artist. You think a mastering engineer can do what a producer can do? No. Everybody is great at something. Just have to understand what it is.
I said this same thing!!! I remember buying this back in 1998 and jamming to it and I remember thinking if someone sampled this joint it would be a hit!!!
When I was a kid i hated this song in particular. Ima grown ass man now. 33. This song is the shit. Amazing. Guess thats called maturity. Marvin was before his time. That's my dude...R.I.P.

Marvin Gaye’s is the artist that I most identify with.
I tried emulate his music earlier in my life.
This brother was so sensual…
His Music did provide sexual healing for many of us during lovemaking
The first time I made love, “I want You” was playing on my cassette deck.
His music helped me, and HEALED during some very trying times……
These songs are dedicated to Nicci. Girl you were my first love
I think of you often….Thank You for allowing me in your life
