your all wrong. had the same exact problem, its the air mass flow sensor, check your intake pipe as well as mine had a small cut in it, i sealed the cut up and it lowered the random idle rpm, because all the shit that got in through the hole made the mass flow sensor dirty. just replace the sensor and it will work. its nothing to do with over heating, gasket or anything like that trust me.
Hi I have the same problem with my 325 2003 . I had a test done they it said it was the trottle housing so Got one fitted and a month on the same problem happen again.
If its bringing on the Eml light and the engine hunting .its more likely a vacum pipe.
remove the top engine cver 2 10mm nuts top engine by aircon filter there a vacum pipe usually collapses . or vacum pipe going to main Air fitler box by alternator
This is on a 318ci sport i would presume same as any other
The same thing happened to me, but in a Volkswagen Passat 2.0T. A light came on that said EPC and in the message box where it should say consumption, it read engine fault workshop! I know nothing about engines, but all I knew was that it only limited me to 25 mph. The guy at Volkswagen said that the "throttle body needed to be replaced." I'm surprised that this happened to a Bimmer, the Ultimate Driving Machine. My Passat stalled out after a jerkey floor which only made the car rev to 28-29rpm
ive got the same problem on my 2002 320 ci , some ay its the debitmetter , thata a senzor on ur air intake near to the air filter. change it and ul be ok

ISCV trust me guys. I had the same issue - now the problem is solved. Replace the idle speed control valve (30min diy work) and that's it!
Otherwise try to clean well the one you have. Check it is not stuck.
