Most of the Malay Natives wholeheartedly welcomed the liberating Imperial Japanese troops. SE Asian countries had been stolen by the American / European colonial masters long ago. Imperial Japanese soldiers fought bravely to take these lands back & return them to the SE Asians.

The British, Australians, NZ, Indian, Gurkha fought and retreated gradually to Singapore due to superior Japanese strategy and airpower. Eventually many of them became POWs, were imprisoned tortured and murdered in Singapore. A small group of allied soldiers even fought a guerilla war from the malayan jungles.
Genrally, the Chinese population under KMT suffered from poverty and hyper inflation. There were no wholesale slaugtering / mutilating of groups of liiving people using guns, knives and whatsoever unlike what the Imperial Japs Army did. I had heard first hand of what happened during the period of the KMT government to the period after the communist won.

@no1kiyoko I have been an ardent student of the pacific war and have researched the conflict for years, it never crossed my research to think that Japan was intent on freeing the orient from "white suppression" it certainly is a new area to consider, however i do think the oil embargo imposed on Japan by FDR had something to do with your attack on the U.S.
Japan's expansion led to independence inspiration for other countries. But Imperial Japan was just as bad in its treatment of occupied people. Right-wing Japanese nationalists still hold to a paternalistic belief that Japan was the sacred champion of its "fellow colored people" and ignore the dark side of history. Likewise, the British Empire led to global adoption of the scientific method and international commerce... but led to some atrocities of oppression too.

My uncle would have been dead in 1941 if it wasn't for a Japanese Army doctor, my uncle was bitten by a viper while playing in the field. My Grandfather said that a Japanese officer [a colonel] has asked him to use his land as a training ground as it was pretty big, they didn't have to do that, they could have just moved in and take the land. Don't forget that Japan contributed to Singapore's later development. Singapore's 1/3 of the land is reclaimed and Japan reclaimed those land with their advanced land reclaim technology. You clearly know very little of the facts or the situation. Your "true fight" would have resulted in a Japanese occupation, regardless, after both the military and civilian populations had been blown to shreds. It is not about numbers. It is about tactical advantages and logistics - both overwhelming favouring the Japanese.

Their navy only managed to almost wipe out the US Navy with a surprise attack before declaring war on US, and also by the incompetence of some US Navy personnel although the radar operators detected the Japs flight.

@Achalel at that time, the brit and dutch interest were only in trade and not conquest. They pretty much left the rest of the country/city to operate by themselves. Only after their commercials were threatened with gangs and criminals that they started hiring local policemen to maintain peace. The dutch and brits asked the local chiefs/headman for permission to conduct trade in the region, and paid for land they needed to use, not with guns blazing killing and raping everyone and everything

The Malay regiment at that time was not very strong. While the colonial soldiers were not willing to fight seriously. They just surrendered and go back to their country. Only the locals fought the japanese while the British soldiers respectfully left Malaya.

@ramlanas WRONG. Get your bloody history right and stop screwing with facts. No allied force left the field of battle to return home. The British, Australians, NZ, Indian, Gurkha fought and retreated gradually to Singapore due to superior Japanese strategy and airpower. Eventually many of them became POWs, were imprisoned tortured and murdered in Singapore. A small group of allied soldiers even fought a guerilla war from the malayan jungles.

@no1kiyoko When Japan was forced to open up to the rest of the world in 1854, Japan wowed never again to be "insulted" by other country, and sought to become an industrial and military might to equal the western powers. They choose to conquer the whole of east asia to gain materials for that. To cover their true intentions, they used the excuse of liberating Asia from western foreign suppression to trick asian countries to support and welcome Japanese rule. The whole of asia suffered for that.

We saw benefit in trade and cultural exchange. Each country decided by itself. No asian country used war, and killing and raping to decide that fate of another country, except Japan.

The other 5% were those who had some remorse and actually admitted to atrocities after the war or those who were punished for voicing their objection against these atrocities.
