You do realize that this isn't a cover right? This is THE actually band playing the song. Eddie Vedder is just singing as a guest since Jim is dead. I seriously hope you were joking when you called this a cover. That's like saying it's stupid when Led Zeppelin covered Stairway to Heaven.
Eddie sang through the entire concert with his own style (pretty much) and voice and didn't try to imitate Jims voice as a true artist should do,and at the end that last scream FIREEEEE he said it like Jim because he simply could, how can you not love this guy..
wow, i'm not a big pearl jam fan but, nice one vedder! he's doing the doors better than the doors are! (i say this mostly because i am disappointed in manzarek, my favorite member, for sloppiness and poor instrument choice. with that said, it's still fun to watch his hands on them keys.)
Sinceramente odio que hagan covers a temas de los doors, pero esto es muy bueno! Jim morrison voz única, eddie vedder voz única! Grandes artistas los dos!
Eddie's voice was so similar to Jim Morrison's one. "Growing up", though, his voice has become sweeter (and more beautiful, if we want), but he has no more that Jim-Morrison-style roughness. GREAT SINGER, GREAT VOICE, EDDIE.
This song was so awesome my rubix cube fell off my desk and completed itself, neighbors called the police and they got arrested, my windows broke and had to buy a mac, pɹɐoqʎǝʞ ʎɯ oʇ sıɥʇ pıp, my cat barked, I have to change my pants, made people miss the like button, mom walked in and? This would be almost perfect... if Ray would toss that idiotic little piece of shit digital douchebag keyboard and go dig out his old Hammond C3 (or whatever the hell he was using back in the 60's).
@Tessmage The organ used on *Light my Fire* was not a Hammond but rather a Vox Continental or Super Continental, which sounds more like what he's playing here than a Hammond.. But I agree he surely could do better that that. Maybe it's because he's to old to tote anything that weighs a lot around. It would be interesting to hear the story of why he's playing that thing. Maybe he doesn't play electric anymore and this is what they gave him for this gig.
@Tessmage Hey yeah, brah, I was at that Justin Bieberconcert! You seemed to really enjoy it. I was there to steal all you dweebs' lunch money. You crap head.
@Tessmage man! i totally agree with you. it's always painful when bands recreate their old stuff with crappy equipment.. some of those older digital keyboards really really suck
@Tessmage I think he used to use a Vox back then for that classic sound. I agree with you: that lame excuse for a musical instrument that he's playing really has shitty sound.
I agree. -1 for Manzarek. Look honey, my stage rig fits in the back seat of the honda! Heading out to a once in a lifetime reunion gig! An event like this they could have wheeled in a damn pipe organ. I was around when the DX-7 craze was afoot, and anyone who was dumb enough to think it was an acceptable replacement for a rhodes or hammond was a total fool. Densmore and Krieger are strong at this point.
You can tell Ray Manzarek is having a little flashback experience with Vedder, when he looks over there to center microphone toward the end. With the hair and all, very Jimmish. Spooky. My favorite rock song of all time. Saw Krieger and his band do this in '91 at the Playhouse Theater in Atlanta. Glad I got to see him then. We do this in my cover band amongst 4 other Doors tunes. Great.
Eddie pulled it off, but he had to lay so low cuz it was obviously the keyboardist who put it together, since he's mostly featured. Sorry, it was hokey - NOT Vedder, NEVER Vedder. He's amazing whatever he does.
Yick, so controlled. The keyboardist is the focal point of this? It's about the singer, it was always about Jim, they discredit their legacy by featuring themselves like this. Eddy Vedder is so much more interesting, but the 'band' want to showcase their musicianship. So unfortunate.
@rayaBein Morrison was one of Vedder's biggest influences -- and this was performed for their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in '93, so it seems altogether fitting that they play not only one of their biggest hits, but one which allows the surviving members (Densmore, Krieger and Manzarek) to shine as individual musicians and as a musical unit. Now that you actually know what is happening here, instead of talking out of your ass, do you still think they're spitting on their legacy?
@kenjames64 Hmm...I can't see it ... Jim. Morrison performing for a bunch of suits sitting around conference tables wondering who is going to be the first to stand and applaud at "The End".....Maybe this was an induction of those who didn't "Break on Through", with Eddie nicely sitting in. Do you really think Jim Morrison would have showed up for this showcase? He would have asked them how it went, then laughed at how they didn't understand what they had just done. Uh, where was Val Kilmer?
@kenjames64 Hmm...I can't see it ... Jim. Morrison performing for a bunch of suits sitting around conference tables wondering who is going to be the first to stand and applaud at "The End".....Maybe this was an induction of those who didn't "Break on Through", with Eddie nicely sitting in. Do you really think Jim Morrison would have showed up for this showcase? He would have asked them how it went, then laughed at how they didn't understand what they had just done. Uh, where was Val Kilmer?
@TheTenTwentyThree I see your point; Jim would have likely hated the concept of a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I think if Jim were still alive, he probably would drawn the song out to at least 20 minutes, and spend most of it writhing and gyrating on the ground while reciting morbid verse. He probably would have been arrested, or at least he would have vomited.
@kenjames64 Morrison wasn't a douche or a pretentious asshole, I don't think he would've turned down the honor of being inducted into a hall of fame. The purpose of all celebrities is to be the best at their trade, become famous, make money, etc. Despite any dedication or love of their art, natural impetus propels them forward in this way. I don't he would've scoffed at performing at an honorary event. And what suits are you talking about? You perform i front of fellow musicians.
@Macknsteez He certainly wasn't pretentious, but he was a difficult front-man for both his band mates and anyone else who dealt with him - overdose at 27, right? If he were alive at the time of this ceremony, he would have been 49 and . . . I hope, not dying his gray hair brown and wearing leather pants. As for the "suits" in the audience, that wasn't me, but the HoF is a weird ceremony full of recording industry types, and very few actual artists. And Vedder totally rocks this.
@kenjames64 If he declined playing it wouldn't be because of "suits" or anything like that, it would be because he would be doing something else with his life, writing, directing, living, etc. He's not a man to disappoint his audience, and I like to think he would've played. After all, the other Doors members played, and as much as Morrison was the frontman for their dark intellect and purpose, the other Doors members were just as much a part of it. They did everything unanimously after all.
1. Claiming or demanding a position of distinction or merit, especially when unjustified.
2. Making or marked by an extravagant outward show; ostentatious. See Synonyms at "showy".
"I am the Lizard king!"...Miami...
Anyone who gets on a stage needs ego and pretentiousness. By being onstage you're saying you're important enough to be seen. Then on top of that you charge a fee to witness you? Still think pretentiousness didn't play a part in JM?
@Macknsteez I'll give you refine thier trade...but...become famous?...make money?...Are you kidding me? Of the truly greats...as they were ...these motivations (as you describe them) are the results of an artist's creation communicating to the populous. I think The young Doors didn't comprehend the relevence of their fame. Hence the stress and abuses. I wish someone could have quantized these things and saw where it was headed. They didn't, and now he's gone. The suits create money / fame.
@TheTenTwentyThree Suits don't create money/fame, they leach off it and extort it. Although their hit of fame was sudden, they did understand it, especially Jim. He manipulated it in interviews, hence all his "what does that mean??" catch phrases and his obsessive drinking. He would've been an alcoholic either way. It's the way of the poet, or rather the seer, voyeur, etc. Intelligent people are rarely happy, truly happy. He lived in existential terms.
@Macknsteez again...I can't see a poet or seer arranging the distribution or marketing of posters / magazine spreads / various interviews / concert tours and logistics / control of media message / album cover creation / distribution. Artists create and perform...they don't necessarily create the exposure that creates the fame....hence the financial rewards of being famous. Most pure poets, seers, artists etc. are surprised by their position. I hope they understand the responsibility.
@TheTenTwentyThree Obviously that's not an artists' job to arrange the distribution of anything, that's never been the job of an artist. But artists, when they become famous, because that is the goal, are subjected to interviews, magazine spreads, tours. Jim loved the attention, that's why he played it up, and then of course he became sick of it, i.e. Miami. Agreeing to play at a concert like this is an issue that the pretentious over analyze, and seeing as Jim was not, he would've performed.
@TheTenTwentyThree It's a natural impetus that alot of artists deny, and it's not a bad thing, it's what drives the quality of your work. Man is at all times trying to establish himself as the most desirable individual. And true, most artists have a serious passion for what they do, but that doesn't replace ego, ego is a very good thing. It's part of that passion. And thank you for the compliment, you're very smart yourself.
Did anyone notice the audience...good thing Eddie was there....'cause even if Mr. Morrison is still alive he never would have taken that gig. I'm reminded of the "Light My Fire" scene in the movie when they showed Jim the Ford Mustang commercial. Crown Plaza Hotel?...Really?..Round tables? Even Eddie didn't want to be there. Look in his eyes at the beginning of the performance. I pray this was for charity. Only excuse I could fathom. You're the Doors!
@TheTenTwentyThree Jim's reaction to the ad was totally skewed in the movie. He only confronted Jac Holzman about it. And there's also a very big difference between selling the rights to your song without discussing it, and accepting a very prestigious award and honor on behalf of your contributions to music. I don't believe Morrison shattered his records when he was awarded them in gold... maybe bands today would refuse, but that's just because they're a bunch of pretentious asswipes.
notice that responses to my previous comment are all ad hominem attacks on me, but no rebuttal to my critique is offered. You like the Doors? great, I respect your opinion, but let's not pretend that this is a good performance.
@MrErichpotter oh really, ray manzarek? am i spelling it right? I had no idea the name of the keyboardist despite the fact that I've been listening to the Doors for almost 7 years... I only know the singer, tim norrison, right? Listen to the keyboard in the original version of the song, and then listen to this island hawaii garageband setting sound. it sounds pretty silly, wouldn't you agree? and how can you make a statement like ray manzarek shaped the sound of the doors the most?
i like how eddie stands away when hes not singing not being selfish as always. he knows the doors were the men of the hour not him. such a classy move but also he nail that morrison performance classic stuff god bless jim and the doors and god bless eddie and pearl jam forever pe@ce from philly
god the Doors are lousy musicans, never understood the appeal. the drummer starts counting them off at one tempo, stops, stutters, then starts back up at another tempo, then takes off like a rocket when the band enters??? this looks like a bunch of orthodontists who gig together on the weekends. Not even Eddie can save them.
@perimeterpost See that right there, that right there. THAT is why the people who don't like you DON'T LIKE YOU.
Yeah, ur gonna come back all internet tough ass with a threatening reply and insulting me as a person. Yeah, typical shit can always see it coming. But don't waste ur time, even though u clearly have way too much on ur hands, because I'm not coming back here. I didn't particularly care for THIS performance, but it wa still awesome and Eddie was a very worthy fill in.
@perimeterpost lets see you do better, post a vid of u playing guitar, drums, keys, bass and singing better than all of them, until then the doors rule forever! (plus there playing live, EVERYONE speeds up live, its just nervousness and adrenaline)
@Guzz60606 No s**t Sherlock!!!! That doesn't change the fact that Ray used a horrible plastic cheesy sound to play this song with. It was a horrible recreation of his Vox Continental organ that he used for their earlier stuff.

TheTenTwentyThree 3 months ago
@TheTenTwentyThree Obviously that's not an artists' job to arrange the distribution of anything, that's never been the job of an artist. But artists, when they become famous, because that is the goal, are subjected to interviews, magazine spreads, tours. Jim loved the attention, that's why he played it up, and then of course he became sick of it, i.e. Miami. Agreeing to play at a concert like this is an issue that the pretentious over analyze, and seeing as Jim was not, he would've performed.
Macknsteez 3 months ago
@Macknsteez You're obviously an intelligent individual...Why do you think the goal of an artist is to become famous?
TheTenTwentyThree 3 months ago

@TheTenTwentyThree This was for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Dotardo 4 months ago
@TheTenTwentyThree Jim's reaction to the ad was totally skewed in the movie. He only confronted Jac Holzman about it. And there's also a very big difference between selling the rights to your song without discussing it, and accepting a very prestigious award and honor on behalf of your contributions to music. I don't believe Morrison shattered his records when he was awarded them in gold... maybe bands today would refuse, but that's just because they're a bunch of pretentious asswipes.
Macknsteez 3 months ago
Well seen as Jim is gone (but still in our hearts) what a man to replace him...
I couldn't think of anyone better.
Eddie Vedder you are the man.
Jim Morrison would be proud...

i agree, no one else but eddie and jim could pull this off... and ray shoulda stuck with the original fender rhodes not that corny sounding keyboard

@Macknsteez yes, surprising, i recognize the doors from the keyboard sound, but not this :)
zagyex 4 months ago
@Macknsteez Yeah... that's Ray Manzarek, who shaped the Doors sound as much, if not more, than Morrison.
MrErichpotter 3 months ago
@MrErichpotter oh really, ray manzarek? am i spelling it right? I had no idea the name of the keyboardist despite the fact that I've been listening to the Doors for almost 7 years... I only know the singer, tim norrison, right? Listen to the keyboard in the original version of the song, and then listen to this island hawaii garageband setting sound. it sounds pretty silly, wouldn't you agree? and how can you make a statement like ray manzarek shaped the sound of the doors the most?
Macknsteez 3 months ago
@MrErichpotter Yeah and that's Robby Krieger the 1 who started the fire

Would love to know what he thought of Eddie covering his place...

i like how eddie stands away when hes not singing not being selfish as always. he knows the doors were the men of the hour not him. such a classy move but also he nail that morrison performance classic stuff god bless jim and the doors and god bless eddie and pearl jam forever pe@ce from philly
anth711 5 months ago
god the Doors are lousy musicans, never understood the appeal. the drummer starts counting them off at one tempo, stops, stutters, then starts back up at another tempo, then takes off like a rocket when the band enters??? this looks like a bunch of orthodontists who gig together on the weekends.

Guzz60606 5 months ago
@Guzz60606 No s**t Sherlock!!!! That doesn't change the fact that Ray used a horrible plastic cheesy sound to play this song with. It was a horrible recreation of his Vox Continental organ that he used for their earlier stuff.
