@DLarson1083 I kept bees for 7 years and was only stung a single time. A single time is enough to kill you if you're deathly allergic. That's not favorable odds in my opinion.
I remember doing this back in the old(er) days when I was just a kid (now37) with my uncle which had a self-sufficinet homestead. He always did it this way, because his hives where skeps made of branches and the combs would come in all possible shapes. It might look disscusting to urban kids but I remember enjoying it alot mmm honeyyyy thanks for the vid, keep it up
@irishbreakfast you probably shouldnt care too much about that im sure he washes his hands. im sure you put feces in your mouth daily from touching door or other public places then touch your face or not wash your hands
This is how I want to process my honey. I'll probably try using a sidewalk ice scraper with a heavy duty shovel handle on it for crushing though. Why get that sticky if you don't have to? I think I might try wearing a glove at least. I know where my hand's been, and you don't want that in your honey do you?
1. Is it OK that the 50 cent mesh came from a paint store, and might have had a kid wipe their boogers on it while waiting for their mommy? I understand what you don't know won't kill you, but since the honey won't be pasteurized, shouldn't everything be sterilized?
FYI- the mesh comes packaged like pantyhose -usually 2 to a bag- so the boogers would be obvious on the outside and not harmful to the contents on the inside. As a matter of fact, you could use pantyhose to strain if you wanted to. Unused, of course.

@DLarson1083 At least until you are stung. But generally a really really bad idea.

A clean piece of wood would work well, like a piece of 3 by 2 & just push down, or 2 by 1 1/2.

Potato masher with long handle like used in restaurants makes this much easier and cleaner.

2. Couldn't you put a cover on the bucket to help keep bugs out of it while it's being strained?

Is there one book and/or website that you would absolutely recommend on the subject of Top bar beekeeping???
jamileemc 1 year ago
@jamileemc The forum at biobees(dot)com is a great forum for top bar beekeeping. It's run by the author of "The Barefoot Beekeeper."

outofskyblue posts spectacular bee videos. But caution - when processing honey only use food grade plastics and materials.
ilovebees3 2 years ago 3
@ilovebees3 My Rubbermaid trash can #2 is more food grade then my Glad #5
and most 5 gal are #5 or less.
