I am an anglo-irish (or should that be hiberno-english) soccer fan with some interest in GAA, and my question is this- why are the goalkeepers in Gaelic Football so shite? I've seen mistakes in All-Ireland finals that would shame a sunday morning pub team soccer goalie. It's not as if Gaelic Football keepers have much to do- 90% of the time the ball is kicked ten feet over their head!
And before you ask, no I've never played Gaelic Football so I might well be talking out of my arse.
Sure if they are any good they play professional soccer eg. Shay Given and probly any of the FAI league goalkeepers are good enough to play for their counties.
Just a few possibilities: they're amateurs, the football is heavier, the crossbar is higher, players can handle the ball as well making it more difficult for the keeper to tackle/predict where they will shoot
i'll respectfully disagree with the first suggestion. i'm not sure i agree with the second - i play indoor soccer, where the ball, if not heavier, is denser than a regular soccer ball. as for gaa goals, they're higher by about two inches than a soccer goal, and narrower by over two-and-a-half feet.
your fourth suggestion can definitely make a difference. i'm a pretty solid indoor soccer keeper, but i didn't know my head from my ass when i played goal in team handball. that said, i'd expect i'd feel much more at ease if i'd grown up playing a sport where a ball/puck were shot with the hand.
My original point was not about shot-stopping, more about basic tactical and positional awareness. And no, I couldn't save any of those shots but I'm a fat middle-aged man, not someone representing his county.
