I think the movie itself is pretty good and thought provoking and sundance-y but the way they edit it with all the frames within frames is annoying. If they did that for like a minute like once every 30 minutes it would have been cool.

Well, to answer your question, it's ambiguous how the brother was lost. In the book, he went missing at some point during Tracy's encounter with Billy Zero. In the film, it is evident from seeing sonny's tuque that he may have fallen into the water (and likely drowned) during Tracy's encounter with Billy. I interpreted her search as a three-day pipe dream of denial.

She filmed this before Juno. It was out in Canada I think in 2006 so she was probably like 18 when she filmed it.
