Im doing a school project about how families cope with returning family members from war. I need interviews. can i please get the emails or contact info of some of these families to have an interview with them
Here's all kids need to know about coping with war and wounded family members, courtesy of graphic author Garth Ennis:
"Fighting for those who run the world gets you stabbed in the back, You fight the wars they start, you kill the monsters they create, you die handling Uranium while they get rich off of oil. I'm not going back to war just so Colt can sell off their machine gun surplus, I had enough of that in 'Nam."
"That's not the way it works" (continued in next post)
I hate that people are too busy blaming every government official they can and saying that's what these guys get for signing up. If these people didn't make the decisions they have, where would we be? The same people would be complaining if no one stepped up and just let us get blown up and our freedoms taken away. I am sick of people taking everything these soldiers fight for for granted. Can't you stop your whining and just thank them?
I was choking up there. And even John was choking up a bit while singing, too. It's a heartfelt thing seeing these people's coping with their families' changes together as families.
That's what Happen When sell you life and right's away to this country's military for a fat pay check young men have to fight war's that old men declare
It's great that Sesame Street and folks like Queen Latifah and John Mayer are doing such wonderful things for our military and their families. Not only are Mayer and Latifah incredibly talented, but this shows they have a heart for children and for our military. Great job!!
However, this segment is niether pro or anti this war or militry involvement. It just highlights the reality that not everyone comes back without physical or mental harm and that care needs to be made to welcome people back, even into their own homes and families.
This is brave television which justifies the brave soldiers, brave familes and brave children it portrays.
Once again, Sesame Street proves that it is one of the most important programmes of the world. Well done on taking such a difficult topic and bridging the gap between the adult world and the world of the children.
I was a very vocal opponent of the Iraq War, and have been to court due to a number of direct actions trying to change British government involvement.
The soldier with both legs and an arm missing was injured in the same explosion as a young man I know; who is still recovering years later from a brain injury. This is not a political video or video about war. It is a video of compassion, understanding, hope and encouragement.
Again, Sesame Street is raised a new level in creating children's entertainment that is not only educational, but touches the human spirit in a friendly manner for families to enjoy. These special moments are right next to the death of Hooper, the revealing of Snuffy, the Hurricane episode, and Kami the HIV monster.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
they should make a video that scares kids into not joining the military. especially if they have families. war is not the answer. if you think it is, you havent opened your mind to the possibilities of peace and should stop listening to your corrupt government's ideas. be with your families in one piece like you're supposed to be. dont fight for the government's selfish stupidity
I agree that war is awful, horrible, and tragic. But in some cases, it is necessary. The "government's selfish stupidity" is not what these brave men and women are fighting for. They are fighting for our freedom; for your right to spout your nonsense and for liberty to exist in the U.S. They defend us against countries that hate us. As nice as it would be to just 'talk,' sometimes, we need physical force. And I am grateful to the heroes that protect us.
I feel that it is appropriate for 5 year olds!! So appropriate! Why pretend to these kids like something didnt happen? Its saying its ok to be different! and if you have love in your family you can conquer anything! I know because my son is one of the young children in this special!! And he is all the better for sesame streets involvement! these children are the true amazing heros! As human beings we all need to be kind to one another and have respect for ones life!
hope some of these kids rule the world some day.. that just may be the only way for people in charge of a nation to understand how stupid it is to send people to war.
It is only stupid to send people to war then tie their hands behind their back so they cannot win decisively. As an Armed Forces member,my brothers and sisters in arms and I hope that those who we protect understand the level of commitment and sacrifice we accept to keep the war out of your backyard. Be grateful that our nation has a mighty military to serve as the backstop when diplomacy fails and tyranny and oppression must be removed to allow peace and prosperity to once again bloom.
I'm not sure this is a war that can be won decisively because for the most part it's a war on an idea/concept of terrorism. Sure we can fight the people who choose to put that idea into action, but as long as that idea exists, there will ALWAYS be people who will put it into action and become terrorists. That being said I have nothing but respect for the military and I understand the sacrifice of military families because my dad is in the Army and served a tour that ended about two years ago.
i don´t want to disrespect you or any of the people sent to war, i just don't share the concept of a "positive war", or war as a solution of anything..
how can you help or do better by killing people?
how can governments pretend for peace to bloom while they bomb and destroy entire nations?
how come all of the "terrorism-supporting" countries are curiously places where you may find oil or gas?
if it were really about "killing the bad guys" why don't they fight against drug traffickin??
We do fight against drug trafficking smart guy. before you hold up your anti-war sign you better get your facts straight. Are you aware that we are in Africa and south America? We are. Guess, what? There is no oil there. We are there to help the people. Why dont we see that on the news? Because people like you keep people like them printing propaganda that sells. And if you don't believe in a posititve war then you best move to a different country. How do you think we got our freedom?
i'm not trying to be smart, just sharing my point of view.
i do respect the military, i just don't think war is necessary.
in south america (where i am from, actually) there is oil, take venezuela as an example (i'm not supporting any kind of dictatorial regimen if you may believe it)
i simply do not understand how killing innocent people can help anything, that's all.
Yes, you are correct. There is oil in south America. However it is not our "interest" in being there. And as far as killing innocent people, that is not our practice anymore. I know because I have been there. I have seen first hand the people that we help and the good that has come from us being there. There is a lot of good happening over there. Most of the innocent people that die are caused by local terrorist acts. Those numbers would be a lot higher if we were not there, believe it or not.
i'm sure it is really easy to write from the comfort of my house without ever even being where people like you have been, and seeing what you might have.
i just wish somebody would come up with a better idea to solve problems such as terrorism in a different way.
War is always the last line of action in the diplomatic hierarchy. It is infinitely unfortunate and heartbreaking when innocent lives are taken during war, but the intelligent bystander must examine the circumstances. In WWII civilians were targeted. Today we take every last measure to avoid civilian casualties to the point of calling off attacks. But the cowards we fight against hide behind the innocents. Don't point the finger at our military. Point it at the enemy.
fosterty: I hate to say this, especially since this coming from Sesame Street, but...Bush put us in Iraq, not because of Saddam--whom WE put there during the Reagan era--but because of supposed Weapons of Mass Destruction that did NOT exist. In short, Bush used the WMD as a scapegoat for going into a country that's NOT ours and trying to establish OUR brand of government--which is FULL of corrupted BS--upon Iraqi people.
@TherealRNO HA! Iraq was corrupt long before we went there. Also, do me a favor and talk to a Kurd some day. Ask them what President Saddam was like :)
@DocHellfish: Yes, I didn't doubt it was corrupt, but guess what? WE PUT SADDAM THERE. Remember your history. WE LET HIM do his thing UNTIL he invaded Kuwait. It was only THEN that we put our foot down & now, with THREE wars going on--one in Iraq between the powers that be who've been fighting LONGER than we've been there (meaning, it is never-ending), one in Afgahnistan, and NOW on in Eygpt, I for one am SICK & tired of us being world's police when we ourselves CAN'T fix our own damn problems.
@TherealRNO No, we didn't put him there.. We just supported him when he fought the Iranians.. I've been given history lessons first hand from Iraqs. Do me a favor and research what this guy did to the Iraqi Parliment when he took over. You are right though, we have been the sole police force for the world for too long, the UN needs to stop being so useless.... and I wasn't talking about just saddam being corrupt.... Corruption is part of of the Iraqi way of life. It is in everything.
"And as far as killing innocent people, that is not our practice anymore."
Tell that to Guantanamo Bay prisoners--some of whom were innocent unjustly tortured--and to the families of those innocents who were killed in this war we will NEVER win, since the two warring factions have been fighting since they existed. Sesame Street's fellow Muppet program Fraggle Rock was created to stop war and now, he we are supporting it when war should be the last resort!
I don't think this debate is appropriate when it comes to children. Despite the fact that Bush made the biggest mistake of going to war with Iraq, and Guantanamo Bay, Americans were given a choice whether to enlist even though this has been debated for years now. We don't like war. Nobody does. The problem is when soldiers come home without arms, legs, etc., children are deeply affected. And that's what SS does. They break social and political barriers to helping children around the world.
simonizer: You don't give children enough credit. They're not blissfully ignorant or stupid unless their parents attempt to shelter them from the evils of the world. Unfortunately, as our societies become more interconnected through technologies and globalization, children learn about adult things--from violence, to sex, to bias, et al--at increasingly younger ages. The fact that--through our promotional measures--kids now are thinking of sex at ages as young as twelve proves it...
Children are gonna have to learn about adult things. Do you really think they're going to be children for the rest of their lives? Society keeps changing and we have to change. When I say this debate is inappropriate, I meant that. You can't engage in a one-sided opinion without knowing the other side of the story. That's just ignorance.
Take the example of the revealing of Snuffy. The plot was that Big Bird was to reveal Snuffy to the adult characters. In the early years of SS, the writers thought that Snuffy was imaginary, and at the time was a good idea. But during the 80s there was a cases of child molestation. And when children talked to parents about these cases, parents thought it was all imaginary. It was simply a bad idea.
The point that I'm trying to say is, if it wasn't for the writers changing the plot. Child molesters would continue to molest. Thoughout the 40 years being on television, Sesame Street is constantly changing to the needs of children everywhere. It is the most highly marketed research TV show in the history of television because they learned from their mistakes.
"Children are gonna have to learn about adult things.."
No, but there's a period where kids should be kids and shouldn't be focusing on adult problems.
"Society keeps changing and we have to change."
Not if society sucks as a result of said change. Using Disnet now as an example, it used to be innovative and full of variety, but now, it puts out the same teenybopper stuff daily that tells kids who to be like, whether be as MileyHannah, the "Jo Bros", the HSM cast, or whomever.
You can't stop kids from growing and changing! The best thing parents can do is to learn from it, understand it, and teach kids what they know so that kids can understand for themselves. Companies are trying to innovate and evolve. They have to. That's how they get their net worth. Even if they have to go to another demographic audience; it may not satisfy everyone. But there are always choices, and you don't need to stick to SS, or Disney, or whatever. And that's fine. More for the rest of us.
You realize Guantanamo Bay was not illegal or wrong. We are allowed to torture terrorists. The Geneva Convention does not apply to them. They are not in military uniform. Now that BHO has shut it down they don't even have a place to put them.
I find Guantanamo Bay a little fuzzy. There are some ambiguities. Because from what I heard, even though BHO is shuting down the facility, there's little indiction as to what he's going to do next. And those secret interrogation sites that Obama wants to shut down permanently. Can they be still open for short term/transitional detention? We'll have to see and find out.
You realize that he has already shut it down. They even released some becuase they were only suspected terrorists. Well guess what, they have found some of those released terrorists in the Middle East making plans to kill US soldiers and attacks against America. Do you really think that Guantanamo Bay is the only torture site? There are places far worse that we will never know about. Nobody wants them to be harbored in their state.
Just because something is LEGAL, does NOT make it moral.... what if it was YOU it was done to? Or your family while you watched (Abu Grabh)... then what would you think?
You see it would not be me. I am not a terrorist nor will ever be one. Not moral? Do you think they deserve fair trial and the right to be treated nice? I mean they are nice to us, aren't they? No, they capture, torture, mutilate, rape & decapitate our soldiers. They do everything they can to ruin and break them. Abu Grabh? Do you mean Abu Grhaib, Baghdad's central prison. This war would be over by now if it wasn't for people like you who cry and we have to do shit the pollitically correct way.
Really then why have we prevented more terrorists attacks through our waterboarding.
Lets say you're a father. Someone kidnapps her. Would you rather the police sit down with them and talk it over with doughnuts or a cup of tea or would you rather them use brutal methods to get her back? I know what you will want to say but will you say it is the question. Which way is more effective? Torture or tea, you decide. They're put in because they are terrorist or help terrorists not race/religion.
oh so you're a die hard republican..that's ok, i have nothing against people like you...honey, no one wanted to attack usa again...it has nothing to do with the torture center your beloved president opened, guantanamo didn't prevented anything...! have you heard that bush's family is actually friends with the bin laden's? bush's goverment was corrupt, dirty and he needs to pay for all the damage he did...and he also hurt and destroyed many american families...
Really so when we waterboarded Abu Zubaydah we didn't prevent an attack? What about Khalid Sheik Mohammed which allowed us to prevent 9/11 style terrorists attacks in LA? There are more, a lot of them bombings. There are 2 examples right there. Go look them up if you do not believe me. Bush friends with Bin Laden, WTF. Keep your enemy close I guess. Destroyed families? They knew what they signed up for. There is no peace without war and no war without casualties. They do it for us not fame.
@fairycristela You are such a sad person. You know the US Military is probably the most diverse, color blind organization in america? I bet you hate america? Don't you?
@DocHellfish Had to go through the commentaries to see what you meant and I think you misunderstood that user (who seems to not have an account anymore) the never said the US military was racist all they said was that people got tortured at Guantanamo only because of their race and religion...like no white person (or even black for that matter) ever went there....they were all arabs even if they weren't terrorists.
@TheRaspberryHoney This is also skewed. Guantanamo is the repository for terrorists we have captured in Iraq and Afghanistan... How many Scandinavian and/or African descent people live there? This is a fallacy. Like: Cutting people is a crime. Surgeons cut people. Therefore, surgeons are criminals.
@DocHellfish I know and I agree with you at some level but some people who were tortured at Guantanamo were not terrorists! And some terrorists are white (ETA for example) that wasn't my point...my point was that any arab looking person instantly became a suspect even when they had done nothing wrong. And it's stupid to compare a surgeon to terrorists or the people who tortured them at Guantanamo.
@TheRaspberryHoney I am not comparing a surgeon to a terrorist. A typical liberal tactic, seize on one piece of my comment in an effort to discredit me and ignore the rest.. I am showing an example of a fallacy. The makeup of GITMO doesn't have to do with ethnicity and but with (mostly) getting picked up by US Troops on a battlefield. That's like calling someone racist for arresting a Russian in Russia.
@DocHellfish And I may not know Iraqi or Afghan people but they can't all be bad! That's just a cruel stereotype...like saying all Americans have no culture at all (a VERY common stereotype in Europe which I know it's false) or that Eastern Europeans are communist! Yeah maybe the Iraqi government is corrupt and disgusting but does that make the people corrupt too? No! Bush was also VERY corrupt and that doesn't make you americans corrupt does it?
@DocHellfish A lot of Muslims are actually not extreme...but the extreme ones are the ones making noise! Islam can be peaceful...the problem is when extremists take control of the situation. In this case, some extremist took advantage of the necessity that those countries have to go through during their whole lives....
And finally, I'm guessing by your arguments that you are a republican...in that case (and here's yet another stereotype) I guess nothing I say will get through you.
@TheRaspberryHoney I am curious, how much of your world view is based off experience instead of what someone else has told you? How much do you know about Arab customs and culture? How much time have you spent with them? Did you know they would much much much rather us arrest them than local authorities? Do you know how brutal afghani and iraqi police can be?
@DocHellfish I have Jordanian, Palestine and Lebanese friends and they're all very mad about this whole thing. I know afghani and iraqi police can be brutal and I think terrorist should be punished but torture just seems so medieval...I don't know maybe you and I are just two very different kids of people.
@DocHellfish I'm not american but I don't hate america...I live here so I love it. I'm from a country who has suffered because of Al Qaeda (the Madrid attacks) and other terrorist groups (ETA)...I hate terrorism as much as the average person or maybe even more because it's close to me (an old teacher of mine died during the Madrid attack) but I still think we have to be better than them in some way. And you have to accept that SOME of the people at Guantanamo were nothing but horrible mistakes.
oh and btw honey, ron paul will NEVER make it to the white house...a peruvian hairless dog has more chances of becoming president than he does(and thank god for that)...
@TherealRNO Talk to the hundreds of thousands of families saddam's innocent victims.. Oh wait, you can't because they were killed too. Show me a president bush rape room... I can show you an Uday rape room I've been in. Those dudes in Guantanamo are hardly innocent. Your world view is so skewed its really not worth speaking to you anymore. I used to be a pretty 'middle of the road' kinda guy till I saw the evil of the world first hand. You should travel more.
@DocHellfish: Listen, I know not everyone in the Middle Eastern part of the world is good, but it is NO different anywhere else in the world. We in the States have high crimes too (ex: St. Louis MO is one of the highest ranked crime-filled cities). Just check up on what you get on local and national news. All they mention anymore to get ratings is all the negative stuff we've faced or are facing. We NEVER see or hear the positives much, if at all. So we must MAKE those positives happen!
@TherealRNO You are speaking out of context. Those stats are Per capita. Corruption in Iraq is ingrained in very culture so bad it is staggering. Thats the thing that we are trying to overcome there. Iraqis are on the whole a good people. Iraqis don't give a crap about Shia or Sunni or any of that... Its their tribal leadership vying for power. However, under their tribal system, what the shiek says is what is done, even if don't agree. Their culture is vastly different
Again, the US military does not target innocent people. Our enemy, a cowardly lot who dresses just like the civilians in our battle zone, hides behind innocent civilians, kills innocent civilians and blames it on the US. They've gone so far as digging up graves, taking photos and posting them -- they lie. Innocents do die, but the finger of blame must point to the enemy.
The pacifist mindset only guarantees one thing -- someday you will live under tyranny, not under the flag of freedom.
There is a difference between deliberate targeting and fratricide. Fratricide is a horrific, heartbreaking, unforgettable and regretable part of war -- no US or Coalition soldier, sailor, Airman or Marine knowingly aims at a fellow brother in arms and fires. They are not malicious as are the acts of our common and cowardly enemy. If you're involved with defending your nation, then you understand. If not, then perhaps you should sit this out.
What about the children of the service members? Children need to understand the sacrifice service members give. You can't shelter kids too much. It'll make them naive and there is no room in this world for naivete.
I think if a parent is watching with their kids it might help if the parents can kind of reinterpret the message of the program if it gets to be too much for their kid to handle or if there is something the kid doesn't understand.
That being said, in the interest of full disclosure, I'm a 23 year old college kid not majoring in psychology or education and who doesn't actually have a kid of my own. This was merely my opinion. Carry on.
You think a five year old can't understand that ' Daddy can't walk anymore' or 'Mommy is missing an arm?" They might not be able to grasp the full implication of the tragedy that occurred, but the point is that this is helping to initiate a mind set, in which kids can communicate their concerns and fears. Plus, it makes them feel like their mom or dad is someone important, which they are; they are a hero.
Being a 2x iraqi veteran in the Mental Health field I want to stand up and congratulate Sesame Street for having the courage to address a subject that most think is way beyond our children when that simply is not the case. Bravo and Thank you from the bottom of my soldier heart!
we need to support our troops the way they support us!! What a great project to be apart of. I'm glad to know that musicians and programs liek sesame street are steeping up to the plate
near and dear to my heart.... My husband was deployed overseas twice. Thank you, ELMO, Queen Latifah, and John Mayer for your compassion and involvement in this project.... and Thank you John for the link to this!!
What an incredibly moving video. Thank you John, Queen Latifah and Elmo for having the compassion and strength to promote and support PTSD. It's a common but frequently missed condition that effects so many people. Hopefully your well known faces and commitment to the cause will bring more awareness to how we can help each other.
OMG! Congratulations! to everyone involved in this! although we don't live this situation in Mexico i feel this... and i have a lot of respect for the human beings that give themselves for their country!
This made me cry, these kids are so brave, to deal with this in such a strong way. Stuff that changes your life can be hard to deal with, at any age, and just seeing these kids, like the kid at 1:10, it's just hopeful. It's really great of John and Queen Latifah to support our troops and their families.
Share a bit of your love my friend...share a bit of your love... supporting our troops doesn't end when the fighting stops. Let's grow a generation that cares...thanks JM
Thanks for the link, John -- this is such an admirable thing to support our troops and their families in their time of pain. And hugs from Georgia, too! :P
I look foward to watching it on 4/1...thanks for the link John. I am very thankful for the brave men and women, who fight to protect our country. God bless them and their families!!
Praying for our soldiers and their families too. So grateful for their service and touched by this video. Lord be with these families and give them your peace.
This is why I like Sesame Street. They would always deal with issues that affect kids the most, like kids dealing with injured parents, or friends who had two parents of the same sex, or whatever. Sesame Street is great.
Here here! Throughout its 40-year run, Sesame Street has RARELY missed a chance to be socially relevant. People can be all anti-Elmo and say he ruined the show and made it baby-ish and such, but moments like this may make them reconsider.
I can't wait to watch the Special. Thank you Military Families for letting Sesame Street have you sharing your story to help others dealing with CHANGE. Especially the Kids.
I too am also a military member. This is a very touching video, I just want to say thanks to my fellow service members for doing what you all do. Your friends and family would be saying the same things. Thank you again.
enshandur: Usually people right comments like that when they are insecure in their own sexuality! Enjoying your freedom jerk! the soldiers that are on this video will be reading these comments...and i'm sure it will make them feel great knowing that their body parts got blown up defending our freedom for idiots like you! Grow up
Leave it to sesame street! What a great thing for the kids!! My son is one of the kids in this video and what a great experience for all the kids...Way to go sesame Street!! It helps the kids alot!!
thank you disneyranger! but he must of took his stupid comment off!! It worked! sometimes it just takes other people to point out when your acting like a jerk! thanks again!
This is the part of the new Sesame Street I like best- when they show stuff like this. :) btw- geisler78, take your fear of a full figured woman else where.
What a fantastic idea, Sesame Street. This is going to help so many families, especially the children, understand and cope with the changes in their families. Way to go!!! I look forward to watching!

they should make a video that scares kids into not joining the military. especially if they have families. war is not the answer. if you think it is, you havent opened your mind to the possibilities of peace and should stop listening to your corrupt government's ideas. be with your families in one piece like you're supposed to be. dont fight for the government's selfish stupidity
WeskJago 2 years ago
Excuse me? You are obviously ignorant.

As human beings we all need to be kind to one another and have respect for ones life!

hope some of these kids rule the world some day.. that just may be the only way for people in charge of a nation to understand how stupid it is to send people to war.
arirosario 2 years ago
It is only stupid to send people to war then tie their hands behind their back so they cannot win decisively. As an Armed Forces member,my brothers and sisters in arms and I hope that those who we protect understand the level of commitment and sacrifice we accept to keep the war out of your backyard. Be grateful that our nation has a mighty military to serve as the backstop when diplomacy fails and tyranny and oppression must be removed to allow peace and prosperity to once again bloom.
fosterty61 2 years ago 3
I'm not sure this is a war that can be won decisively because for the most part it's a war on an idea/concept of terrorism. Sure we can fight the people who choose to put that idea into action, but as long as that idea exists, there will ALWAYS be people who will put it into action and become terrorists. That being said I have nothing but respect for the military and I understand the sacrifice of military families because my dad is in the Army and served a tour that ended about two years ago.
wheels85 2 years ago
i don´t want to disrespect you or any of the people sent to war, i just don't share the concept of a "positive war", or war as a solution of anything..
how can you help or do better by killing people?
how can governments pretend for peace to bloom while they bomb and destroy entire nations?
how come all of the "terrorism-supporting" countries are curiously places where you may find oil or gas?
if it were really about "killing the bad guys" why don't they fight against drug traffickin??
arirosario 2 years ago 3
We do fight against drug trafficking smart guy. before you hold up your anti-war sign you better get your facts straight. Are you aware that we are in Africa and south America? We are. Guess, what? There is no oil there. We are there to help the people. Why dont we see that on the news? Because people like you keep people like them printing propaganda that sells. And if you don't believe in a posititve war then you best move to a different country. How do you think we got our freedom?
nina052696 2 years ago
i'm not trying to be smart, just sharing my point of view.
i do respect the military, i just don't think war is necessary.
in south america (where i am from, actually) there is oil, take venezuela as an example (i'm not supporting any kind of dictatorial regimen if you may believe it)
i simply do not understand how killing innocent people can help anything, that's all.
arirosario 2 years ago 2
Yes, you are correct. There is oil in south America. However it is not our "interest" in being there. And as far as killing innocent people, that is not our practice anymore. I know because I have been there. I have seen first hand the people that we help and the good that has come from us being there. There is a lot of good happening over there. Most of the innocent people that die are caused by local terrorist acts. Those numbers would be a lot higher if we were not there, believe it or not.
nina052696 2 years ago
i'm sure it is really easy to write from the comfort of my house without ever even being where people like you have been, and seeing what you might have.
i just wish somebody would come up with a better idea to solve problems such as terrorism in a different way.
arirosario 2 years ago 2
War is always the last line of action in the diplomatic hierarchy. It is infinitely unfortunate and heartbreaking when innocent lives are taken during war, but the intelligent bystander must examine the circumstances. In WWII civilians were targeted. Today we take every last measure to avoid civilian casualties to the point of calling off attacks. But the cowards we fight against hide behind the innocents. Don't point the finger at our military. Point it at the enemy.
fosterty61 2 years ago
fosterty: I hate to say this, especially since this coming from Sesame Street, but...Bush put us in Iraq, not because of Saddam--whom WE put there during the Reagan era--but because of supposed Weapons of Mass Destruction that did NOT exist. In short, Bush used the WMD as a scapegoat for going into a country that's NOT ours and trying to establish OUR brand of government--which is FULL of corrupted BS--upon Iraqi people.
TherealRNO 2 years ago
@TherealRNO HA! Iraq was corrupt long before we went there. Also, do me a favor and talk to a Kurd some day. Ask them what President Saddam was like :)
DocHellfish 11 months ago
@DocHellfish: Yes, I didn't doubt it was corrupt, but guess what? WE PUT SADDAM THERE. Remember your history. WE LET HIM do his thing UNTIL he invaded Kuwait. It was only THEN that we put our foot down & now, with THREE wars going on--one in Iraq between the powers that be who've been fighting LONGER than we've been there (meaning, it is never-ending), one in Afgahnistan, and NOW on in Eygpt, I for one am SICK & tired of us being world's police when we ourselves CAN'T fix our own damn problems.
TherealRNO 11 months ago
@TherealRNO No, we didn't put him there.. We just supported him when he fought the Iranians.. I've been given history lessons first hand from Iraqs. Do me a favor and research what this guy did to the Iraqi Parliment when he took over. You are right though, we have been the sole police force for the world for too long, the UN needs to stop being so useless.... and I wasn't talking about just saddam being corrupt.... Corruption is part of of the Iraqi way of life. It is in everything.
DocHellfish 11 months ago
"And as far as killing innocent people, that is not our practice anymore."
Tell that to Guantanamo Bay prisoners--some of whom were innocent unjustly tortured--and to the families of those innocents who were killed in this war we will NEVER win, since the two warring factions have been fighting since they existed. Sesame Street's fellow Muppet program Fraggle Rock was created to stop war and now, he we are supporting it when war should be the last resort!
TherealRNO 2 years ago
I don't think this debate is appropriate when it comes to children. Despite the fact that Bush made the biggest mistake of going to war with Iraq, and Guantanamo Bay, Americans were given a choice whether to enlist even though this has been debated for years now. We don't like war. Nobody does. The problem is when soldiers come home without arms, legs, etc., children are deeply affected. And that's what SS does. They break social and political barriers to helping children around the world.
simonizer888 2 years ago 2
simonizer: You don't give children enough credit.
TherealRNO 2 years ago 2
Children are gonna have to learn about adult things. Do you really think they're going to be children for the rest of their lives? Society keeps changing and we have to change. When I say this debate is inappropriate, I meant that. You can't engage in a one-sided opinion without knowing the other side of the story. That's just ignorance.
simonizer888 2 years ago
Take the example of the revealing of Snuffy. The plot was that Big Bird was to reveal Snuffy to the adult characters. In the early years of SS, the writers thought that Snuffy was imaginary, and at the time was a good idea. But during the 80s there was a cases of child molestation. And when children talked to parents about these cases, parents thought it was all imaginary. It was simply a bad idea.
simonizer888 2 years ago
The point that I'm trying to say is, if it wasn't for the writers changing the plot. Child molesters would continue to molest. Thoughout the 40 years being on television, Sesame Street is constantly changing to the needs of children everywhere. It is the most highly marketed research TV show in the history of television because they learned from their mistakes.
simonizer888 2 years ago
"Children are gonna have to learn about adult things.."
No, but there's a period where kids should be kids and shouldn't be focusing on adult problems.
"Society keeps changing and we have to change."
Not if society sucks as a result of said change. Using Disnet now as an example, it used to be innovative and full of variety, but now, it puts out the same teenybopper stuff daily that tells kids who to be like, whether be as MileyHannah, the "Jo Bros", the HSM cast, or whomever.
TherealRNO 2 years ago
You can't stop kids from growing and changing! The best thing parents can do is to learn from it, understand it, and teach kids what they know so that kids can understand for themselves. Companies are trying to innovate and evolve. They have to. That's how they get their net worth. Even if they have to go to another demographic audience; it may not satisfy everyone. But there are always choices, and you don't need to stick to SS, or Disney, or whatever. And that's fine. More for the rest of us.
simonizer888 2 years ago
You realize Guantanamo Bay was not illegal or wrong. We are allowed to torture terrorists. The Geneva Convention does not apply to them. They are not in military uniform. Now that BHO has shut it down they don't even have a place to put them.
THiggs09 2 years ago
This has been flagged as spam show
I find Guantanamo Bay a little fuzzy. There are some ambiguities. Because from what I heard, even though BHO is shuting down the facility, there's little indiction as to what he's going to do next. And those secret interrogation sites that Obama wants to shut down permanently. Can they be still open for short term/transitional detention? We'll have to see and find out.
simonizer888 2 years ago
You realize that he has already shut it down. They even released some becuase they were only suspected terrorists. Well guess what, they have found some of those released terrorists in the Middle East making plans to kill US soldiers and attacks against America. Do you really think that Guantanamo Bay is the only torture site? There are places far worse that we will never know about. Nobody wants them to be harbored in their state.
THiggs09 2 years ago
Just because something is LEGAL, does NOT make it moral.... what if it was YOU it was done to? Or your family while you watched (Abu Grabh)... then what would you think?
ricekenn 2 years ago
You see it would not be me. I am not a terrorist nor will ever be one. Not moral? Do you think they deserve fair trial and the right to be treated nice? I mean they are nice to us, aren't they? No, they capture, torture, mutilate, rape & decapitate our soldiers. They do everything they can to ruin and break them. Abu Grabh? Do you mean Abu Grhaib, Baghdad's central prison. This war would be over by now if it wasn't for people like you who cry and we have to do shit the pollitically correct way.
THiggs09 2 years ago
newsflash!..most people in guantanamo were not actual terrorists!! they were acused just because of they're religion and race!
fairycristela 2 years ago
Really then why have we prevented more terrorists attacks through our waterboarding.
Lets say you're a father. Someone kidnapps her. Would you rather the police sit down with them and talk it over with doughnuts or a cup of tea or would you rather them use brutal methods to get her back? I know what you will want to say but will you say it is the question. Which way is more effective? Torture or tea, you decide. They're put in because they are terrorist or help terrorists not race/religion.
THiggs09 2 years ago
oh so you're a die hard republican..that's ok, i have nothing against people like you...honey, no one wanted to attack usa again...it has nothing to do with the torture center your beloved president opened, guantanamo didn't prevented anything...! have you heard that bush's family is actually friends with the bin laden's? bush's goverment was corrupt, dirty and he needs to pay for all the damage he did...and he also hurt and destroyed many american families...
fairycristela 2 years ago

Don't you?
DocHellfish 11 months ago
@DocHellfish Had to go through the commentaries to see what you meant and I think you misunderstood that user (who seems to not have an account anymore) the never said the US military was racist all they said was that people got tortured at Guantanamo only because of their race and religion...like no white person (or even black for that matter) ever went there....they were all arabs even if they weren't terrorists.
TheRaspberryHoney 8 months ago
@TheRaspberryHoney This is also skewed. Guantanamo is the repository for terrorists we have captured in Iraq and Afghanistan... How many Scandinavian and/or African descent people live there? This is a fallacy. Like: Cutting people is a crime. Surgeons cut people. Therefore, surgeons are criminals.
DocHellfish 8 months ago
@DocHellfish I know and I agree with you at some level but some people who were tortured at Guantanamo were not terrorists! And some terrorists are white (ETA for example) that wasn't my point...my point was that any arab looking person instantly became a suspect even when they had done nothing wrong. And it's stupid to compare a surgeon to terrorists or the people who tortured them at Guantanamo.
TheRaspberryHoney 8 months ago
@TheRaspberryHoney I am not comparing a surgeon to a terrorist. A typical liberal tactic, seize on one piece of my comment in an effort to discredit me and ignore the rest.. I am showing an example of a fallacy. The makeup of GITMO doesn't have to do with ethnicity and but with (mostly) getting picked up by US Troops on a battlefield. That's like calling someone racist for arresting a Russian in Russia.
DocHellfish 8 months ago
@DocHellfish And I may not know Iraqi or Afghan people but they can't all be bad! That's just a cruel stereotype...like saying all Americans have no culture at all (a VERY common stereotype in Europe which I know it's false) or that Eastern Europeans are communist! Yeah maybe the Iraqi government is corrupt and disgusting but does that make the people corrupt too? No! Bush was also VERY corrupt and that doesn't make you americans corrupt does it?
TheRaspberryHoney 8 months ago
@DocHellfish A lot of Muslims are actually not extreme...but the extreme ones are the ones making noise! Islam can be peaceful...the problem is when extremists take control of the situation. In this case, some extremist took advantage of the necessity that those countries have to go through during their whole lives....
And finally, I'm guessing by your arguments that you are a republican...in that case (and here's yet another stereotype) I guess nothing I say will get through you.
TheRaspberryHoney 8 months ago
@TheRaspberryHoney I am curious, how much of your world view is based off experience instead of what someone else has told you? How much do you know about Arab customs and culture? How much time have you spent with them? Did you know they would much much much rather us arrest them than local authorities? Do you know how brutal afghani and iraqi police can be?
DocHellfish 8 months ago
@DocHellfish I have Jordanian, Palestine and Lebanese friends and they're all very mad about this whole thing. I know afghani and iraqi police can be brutal and I think terrorist should be punished but torture just seems so medieval...I don't know maybe you and I are just two very different kids of people.
TheRaspberryHoney 8 months ago
@DocHellfish I'm not american but I don't hate america...I live here so I love it. I'm from a country who has suffered because of Al Qaeda (the Madrid attacks) and other terrorist groups (ETA)...I hate terrorism as much as the average person or maybe even more because it's close to me (an old teacher of mine died during the Madrid attack) but I still think we have to be better than them in some way. And you have to accept that SOME of the people at Guantanamo were nothing but horrible mistakes.
TheRaspberryHoney 8 months ago
oh and btw honey, ron paul will NEVER make it to the white house...a peruvian hairless dog has more chances of becoming president than he does(and thank god for that)...
fairycristela 2 years ago
@simonizer888 Thank you simon... YOU GET THE POINT!
DocHellfish 11 months ago
@TherealRNO Talk to the hundreds of thousands of families saddam's innocent victims.. Oh wait, you can't because they were killed too. Show me a president bush rape room... I can show you an Uday rape room I've been in. Those dudes in Guantanamo are hardly innocent. Your world view is so skewed its really not worth speaking to you anymore. I used to be a pretty 'middle of the road' kinda guy till I saw the evil of the world first hand. You should travel more.
DocHellfish 11 months ago
@DocHellfish: Listen, I know not everyone in the Middle Eastern part of the world is good, but it is NO different anywhere else in the world. We in the States have high crimes too (ex: St. Louis MO is one of the highest ranked crime-filled cities). Just check up on what you get on local and national news. All they mention anymore to get ratings is all the negative stuff we've faced or are facing. We NEVER see or hear the positives much, if at all. So we must MAKE those positives happen!
TherealRNO 11 months ago
@TherealRNO You are speaking out of context. Those stats are Per capita. Corruption in Iraq is ingrained in very culture so bad it is staggering. Thats the thing that we are trying to overcome there. Iraqis are on the whole a good people. Iraqis don't give a crap about Shia or Sunni or any of that... Its their tribal leadership vying for power. However, under their tribal system, what the shiek says is what is done, even if don't agree. Their culture is vastly different
DocHellfish 11 months ago
Again, the US military does not target innocent people. Our enemy, a cowardly lot who dresses just like the civilians in our battle zone, hides behind innocent civilians, kills innocent civilians and blames it on the US. They've gone so far as digging up graves, taking photos and posting them -- they lie. Innocents do die, but the finger of blame must point to the enemy.
The pacifist mindset only guarantees one thing -- someday you will live under tyranny, not under the flag of freedom.

Very powerful words my friend, and very true.
nina052696 2 years ago
"the us minitary do not target innocent people"
then why did 1/2 of the english people in the iraq war die by friendly-fire by the americans?
BleedPlox 2 years ago
There is a difference between deliberate targeting and fratricide. Fratricide is a horrific, heartbreaking, unforgettable and regretable part of war -- no US or Coalition soldier, sailor, Airman or Marine knowingly aims at a fellow brother in arms and fires. They are not malicious as are the acts of our common and cowardly enemy. If you're involved with defending your nation, then you understand. If not, then perhaps you should sit this out.
fosterty61 2 years ago 2
On top of that, the US military shielded them from criminal prosecution and a court-martial, even though the Canadian Government requested it.

@BleedPlox Lets see you cite that statistic! I know that most of the english speaking Iraqis I met... WORKED FOR US, GLADLY! as interpreters.

What about the children of the service members? Children need to understand the sacrifice service members give. You can't shelter kids too much. It'll make them naive and there is no room in this world for naivete.
Mel1334 2 years ago
Of course I understand that, but I think there has to be a certain age where people need to say "Okay, this really is a bit too heavy for this age"
SerinaTomoe 2 years ago 2
I think if a parent is watching with their kids it might help if the parents can kind of reinterpret the message of the program if it gets to be too much for their kid to handle or if there is something the kid doesn't understand.
That being said, in the interest of full disclosure, I'm a 23 year old college kid not majoring in psychology or education and who doesn't actually have a kid of my own. This was merely my opinion. Carry on.
wheels85 2 years ago
You think a five year old can't understand that ' Daddy can't walk anymore' or 'Mommy is missing an arm?" They might not be able to grasp the full implication of the tragedy that occurred, but the point is that this is helping to initiate a mind set, in which kids can communicate their concerns and fears. Plus, it makes them feel like their mom or dad is someone important, which they are; they are a hero.
