The super tankers have questionable effectiveness on large fires at the expense of the apparatus and personnel that can hit a fire when it is small. The height that the super tankers have to drop from is bothersome and the airports these big ships need for reloading is very limited. I retired from the Inyo National Forest and there is no way a super tanker could land at the Bishop airport to reload. The public and politicians are wowed by these, but that doesn't mean it works all that well.

It also seems to not drop the retardant effectively as there are some areas in the drops that get very little coverage while other areas get too much. The biggest issue is the price. For the millions of dollars it costs to have one of these available more engines, crews, helicopters and smaller air tankers could be on hand. The goal is to catch small fires before they grow larger .
