espinoza, it's your light sensor. It adjusts the brightness of the screen based on how bright your environment is (if you set it to auto-brightness in settings).

Man I'm exactly the same way. I hate the cases that have the cover. I don't know I just think it's kind of nerdy and bulky. But I use PDO. Their skins are really cool and reasonably priced. And they have FREE shipping so that's always good. pdostore . com check 'em out. I might get a free case for plugging them. :P But they have great products.

My "Griffen" rubber case works pretty well for me. I've dropped my iPod touch 2nd Gen a couple of times and it's still in pretty great condition, even though I bought the iPod back in September. I also recommend the "Griffen" Screen Protectors. ;)
