Hey! Just found this video. I'm new to Mac and I also ordered 8GB from OWC this week for $45. Am I the only one who is SHOCKED that Apple still charges a whopping $210 to upgrade to 8GB??? I mean aren't this sort of thing supple to be down right criminal? to take advantage of the uninformed customers like that.
This plus a few other constant ignoring of OS X bugs has made me kind of see the true side of Apple lately. They don't listen to their customers and do what they think is right. Shame.
@SamBorgman Apple charges that because they can. It is GREAT RAM, but not $210 sorta great. Apple is a great company, and I think they do listen to their customers, but they definitely overlook some things.
@RyanKnowsTech They really don't as much as I thought they would. For example: dual monitor full screening problem is still a big issue, they do nothing about it. Since switching from Windows 7, all I've been googling are "work arounds" to all these problems that are so easy to solve. Forums are full of these complaints. And yet Apple do nothing about them.
I do NOT want to clamshell my MBP to watch movie on big screen for cooling reasons. But I must or I have to use both screens same time.
@i7msc15283 Jesus man. $400 for 8GB is more than just overpriced, it's freaking price gouging. Just go to the site shown in this video if you haven't yet.
Up until late 2010 I was running on 2GB, and 4GB from then onwards. I use Chrome, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Visual Studio, iTunes, you name it all in parallel without any problems whatsoever. As I write this in early 2012, 4GB is enough for 99% of people, with the 1% being moderate-heavy video editors. It is a complete myth that you need to upgrade hardware this often (unless your needs change), especially if you manage any system clutter.
@gloconnor Sorry to disagree. 8GB was not enough for the work I do, so I have since upgraded to 16GB. I would say that 25% of users require more than 4GB today.
@gloconnor Totally agree. 4gb is the sweet spot now, in early 2012. I would argue that any performance increases (boot time, application loading, etc) is simply a product of new and improved hardware replacing older stuff.
It's a cheap upgrade, but unless you are a power user, I don't think it is currently something that will make the computer "faster".
@gloconnor As a programmer, 8GB is much nicer than 4GB. Eclipse, Aptana, and XCode all use a bunch of memory together. For the average internet browser, 4GB is likely enough though.
I disagree. My wife's black Macbook is running like a champ with two gigs. My white Macbook was running 4 gig and was down right snappy even when multitasking. If your system is using over a gig with no apps going something is wrong. You may want to check background processes.
I agree with you about OWC, been using them for years.
Bought Samsung 8GB DD3 1066 mhz, SO-DIMM, 204 Pin for only 45 euros at amazon for my Macbook pro 13" mid 2010. Why should i waste 270$ for the exactly same type of RAM?
Hmm why pay $269.00 for 8gb ram when Newegg have the same 8gb Kingston ram for $34? And Kingston is about the best ram you can buy for desktops and laptops. Those prices at that time was ridiculous!!
@RyanKnowsTech Yes on that site ,i've seen drastically reduced prices on Newegg and other sites for the last 2 years, some sites just like to make a 200% profit. But,nice video .
I have one more question. I have 4GB laying around and I am just wondering if I can mix Samsung ram with Crucial ram. I used the system scanner and everything so far is working great. Thank you. I have 8GB installed right now.
Linux memory management is much better than apples memory management. Linux only uses 43mb ram if you have a cool theme installed and a picture editing software running (photoshop on a compatability layar)
I've got 1gb 10.5 iMac. Adobe products work fine like flash, photoshop and after effects as long as you don't run two of them at the same time if you've got a browser open. Although I just ordered 6 gig ram and it's being shipped.
yea i have 2gb on 10.5 snow leapord :( should i buy 8 gig for €80???? im gona be downloading and using games for it. nice vid thumbs upped + subscribed ;)

@RyanKnowsTech Thanks for a really quick reply. I hope it will work, because it can speed up her mac.
btw i used pc for my whole life and bought my first mac this friday...it didnt work as it should have so i wanted money back and wanted to buy lenovo. But my friend persuaded me to just change to for another one and i am happy i did that :)
First few days were just suffering, but now i start to love it more and more every day :) i should only put SSD drive except and put OS on it..thats all :)
@RyanKnowsTech As long as i find how to manage my files...I have OS Lion and also Snow Leopard on the second partition. (250mb:250mb)
lion was too slow and i want to wait for some relevant updates. Since then i will use SL and then move it all to Lion.
But still as a "PC guy" i have a problem understanding the system of file management on mac. Thats the only thing right now...otherwise its awesome...i had Iphone 3G for Two years and i hate Itunes...so much...thats the main reason why i didnt
i am regretting buying a mac now 250$ for fn ram my desktop pc on new egg van git ddr3 ram for 30$ well 120$ for 32 gb is what i realy bought so far my time with the mac book air sucks
Hey whats that CPU temp and fan speed monitor program you have in the menu bar? I have istat pro and its just a hassle to view the dashboard just to check temps and fan speed.
HOLY I ordered 8 gigs of RAM for my Macbook(WHite) today for $50 because a friend recommended it to me. i decided to look up the performance differences and my mind is blown at the prices shown in this video. I can't believe how much that has changed.
@whatsuphomedog1 I confirm no, the maximum amount for all the mac book series (2011 also) is 8 gigabytes. The difference is basically on the DDR3 quality. 2010 models have DDR3 @1066Mhz. 2011 have DDR3 @1333Mhz. Actually, there's not a big, substantial difference between them.
what about the iMac 7,1? I just went out to upgrade to 4GB but if it can run DDR3 4/4 I would be overjoyed. Is there an answer to this? Running Final Cut Pro often and was going to upgrade to Snow Leopard.
What if my Macbook only accepts 4GB of Ram. I have a White Macbook Unibody from late 2009 and I constantly use Final Cut Pro X on 2GB of RAM (2GB of RAM and FCP X are not the best of friends). I still have 2GB of RAM. What should I do?
@MaddogTheRobot That'll do 8GB no problem. Trust me, I know Apple says it won't, but it will. My friends' 2008 MacBooks support 8GB DDR3 without any issues.
hey iv a 4GB DDR3 Macbook pro 13" 2009 good machine and i wanted to now would 8GB improve gaming and laptop speed cause since i upgraded to lion it hasn't been as snappy as it was on snow leopard. booting is faster but everything else takes that little bit longer and not have as smooth rendering + i was told it would improve my FPS is the true
Thanks for this, im looking to get some new ram because i have 4GB and when i run minecraft, my server, i tunes, google chrome ans msn its laggy and i like to enjoy fast surfing and that kinda thing ") need to get some money then i should be on my ay :)
@zztop5911 That's normal, but I don't know why. It's fine. When Mac OS X needs RAM, it'll find some to use, so how little you have free doesn't matter.
@shnunk1 It's been used by applications, and is still full of that data. However, it doesn't need to be used anymore. When it is needed, that data will be cleared out and it will be used with the new data. You can count it as free memory really.
Hey ryanknowstech I have a question for you. Have you ever heard of crucial ram? I am thinking about getting some ram from there. Have you ever heard of them? By the way great video!
@RyanKnowsTech Well I took your advice and upgraded my macbook from 2gb of ram to 8gb of ram.... and it is the best thing i ever did, thank you for making this video my mac runs so much smoother and preforms so much better, again thanks :D
I have been a customer of OWC for years now. Have bought external HDs, SSDs, CD/DVD burners, memory, etc, so I can say that yeah, their stuff is good (quality).
ok i have the imac 27 2011 with two 2gb ram can i add two 4gb ram or does it have to be four 2gb ram four 4gb ram and so on. will it work with 12gb of ram in all four slots (two 2 gb in 2 slots and two 4 gb in other 2 slots) i hope yo under stud my explanation thanks
@LastArabGamer There are only two RAM slots, I believe. I'd go with 2x 4GB. If you do have 4, just keep them all the same regardless of what they are.
@shnunk1 Same here I had 4 gb and my games were laggy but blamed it on my card just got a 4 gb (total 8gb) and WOW I can now run skyrim on high with graphics mods just fine, before I could only run on low.
im not very goo dat this XD, but can you explain , interms of processing, why we should buy the ram from owc rather than the apple store (im well aware of apple overpricing, but i want t o make sure i get something legitimate)
I bought a brand new MacBook Pro 13.3 (4GB RAM, 250GB HD, 2.53GHz Dual Core Processor) from an iStore on December 2009. It was a Xmas present from me to myself. I use it mainly for music-video recording and editing so I need the space and memory, and also have music and movies and other stuff.
I think OWC is a great site as well, I've decided on 2x4GB RAM OWC modules ($67.90 now) and a 500GB Seagate Mometus XT hydrid drive ($129.90). What do you think?
I'm so stuck in the past bro... I only have 1GB on my '08 Macbook and it's worked very well until recently since I've started doing some serious video/picture editing (Photoshop/After Effects)...
Do you suggest I buy a whole new Mac or simply upgrade the '08 that I have?
@jasonbournetodie Hmmm, the new ones (even baseline) will blow that out of the water with their Intel Core i Series processors. You're better off to find a loving buyer for the '08 and get a new 2011 MacBook Pro 13!
@jasonbournetodie Hmmm, the new ones (even baseline) will blow that out of the water with their Intel Core i Series processors. You're better off to find a loving buyer for the '08 and get a new 2011 MacBook Pro 13!
I have a 2.4 2010 unibody mac mini. I had 2gb running adobe master collection (photoshop, indesign, premiere, after effects, everything) and it ran fine for me. I could even do simple editing in premiere and after effects. But I recently upgraded to 8gb and there is a monumental difference. Point is, if money is a tight, and your not doing serious video editing you are completely fine.
Holy fuck, 8gb is like 50 bucks here in Denmark, and its even great ram :O.

HeyoItsSam 4 months ago
go to crucial.com and you can get 8gb for ram for $50
MugUrPug 4 months ago
another question, lol i have a butt load of ram that is "inactive"
these are my stats... why?
free - 39.9 mb
wired - 714.0mb
active - 1.41gb
inactive 1.85gb
used 3.96gb
why is it like this?
zztop5911 4 months ago
@zztop5911 That's normal, but I don't know why. It's fine. When Mac OS X needs RAM, it'll find some to use, so how little you have free doesn't matter.
RyanKnowsTech 4 months ago
@RyanKnowsTech Yeah, what does the "inactive" RAM mean?
shnunk1 4 months ago
@shnunk1 It's been used by applications, and is still full of that data. However, it doesn't need to be used anymore. When it is needed, that data will be cleared out and it will be used with the new data. You can count it as free memory really.
RyanKnowsTech 4 months ago
@RyanKnowsTech Thanks for that mate.
shnunk1 4 months ago
can you load a video tutorial of upgrading it.
clarence569 4 months ago
Hey ryanknowstech I have a question for you. Have you ever heard of crucial ram? I am thinking about getting some ram from there. Have you ever heard of them? By the way great video!

SSD is far more important than 8gb upgrade #sharingtheknowledge
it really makes a bigger difference than more ram, trust me.

@MrGRiiiND Exactly, you're lucky you have four RAM bays, laptops only have two so it's harder to get more for less money.

ok i have the imac 27 2011 with two 2gb ram can i add two 4gb ram or does it have to be four 2gb ram four 4gb ram and so on. will it work with 12gb of ram in all four slots (two 2 gb in 2 slots and two 4 gb in other 2 slots) i hope yo under stud my explanation thanks
LastArabGamer 5 months ago
@LastArabGamer There are only two RAM slots, I believe. I'd go with 2x 4GB. If you do have 4, just keep them all the same regardless of what they are.

fernandotta 5 months ago
@fernandotta OWC RAM is fine, just as high quality of Apple, just save yourself the money.

Cheers.
waltervt 5 months ago
@waltervt Those sound like good upgrades to me!
RyanKnowsTech 5 months ago
Do you think that I should get 8GB. Do you think it's worth it on a 2 year old imac 27 inch with Intel core 2 duo?
2Cool4Games 5 months ago
@2Cool4Games If you want to keep the computer for at least another year, then yes.

I'm so stuck in the past bro... I only have 1GB on my '08 Macbook and it's worked very well until recently since I've started doing some serious video/picture editing (Photoshop/After Effects)...
Do you suggest I buy a whole new Mac or simply upgrade the '08 that I have?
jasonbournetodie 5 months ago

JuicyDBASE 5 months ago
My RAM just arrived today. I highly recommend the 8 GB upgrade! Made my 2010 Mac Mini into a dream machine.
