He is one with his music I can tell. The whole time it's him and his music. He is living and breathing each note that is coming out of that guitar and he doesn't really care what anyone else is thinking as the audience. He is just bringing to life this song through his own interpretation and it is a special sight.
Dude is tappin chords, playin melodies, and a bass line all at the same time !!!!!!!! Hes playin the guitar like a piano !!!!!!!!! He started off playin the piano then he heard Jimi Hendrix and decided to play guitar. Dude is raw !!!!!!!!
I can understand why there are people who disliked this. Stanley Jordan is incredible. No argument there. But Eleanor Rigby is about the human spirit and what it feels like to be desperately lonely. This cover doesn't capture any of that. So it's fantastic technically, but it doesn't have any of the spirit of the actual song.
@joshtube9 The feeling of loneliness appears many times in his interpretation, and more of that the struggle against this loneliness, some "forced joy times", some smiles to people in order to get a response, this "no response" covered by the descent in low-pitched notes. From my point of view, this is a good interpretation of what loneliness is. And I'm sure genious people like him know what is loneliness, it's not only an interpretation, it's maybe an answering smile to Eleanor's loneliness :)
... and its kind of obvious he has influence from Stanley Jordan ... not that, that's bad, but well ... he's no Stanley (but who is). I came back and listened to the second half ... creative dude, but still kinda messed in the first go at it. Video was taken in 2006, so I'm sure its way more refined. :)

@ahendrix I actually disliked, I think he's overplaying it a lot of time (like from 3:50 on). He didn't finish the melody once, he's using way to many fills. Best part is when he's grooving (from 1:50). Don't get me wrong, I understand how hard it is to play like this, but I just think musical value is more important then moving your fingers around really quick...
@DreamBrother86A Agreed. The other version from 'The Tube' in the 80's was loads 'sharper' on terms of form.Check out the other version (bright pink shirt.) Undoubtedly a fantastic player but as you said he does over do this particular recording to the detriment of the song in that you wouldn't buy this and listen to it, it's messy and overtly 'fret wankish'
@DreamBrother86A You have to give it to him, though. This is amazing for an improvised performance. Once he set the core melody in the beginning, he just went off! I guess I would have liked to hear more of the Eleanor Rigby theme in there, but the sheer musical prowess more than compensates.
If anyone finds this boring, you probably need to take a few more steps up the music appreciation ladder.

@tassepersson This didn't affect the original song in any way. If anything, it gives the listener another dimension to view the song from. I would say it augments the original. @therockingviking you're correct in that their styles are very different. I've met Preston here in Cleveland when he was performing at a club here call Fat Fish Bleu in the Downtown area. Even he said he "hadn't seen anything like what Stanley does". FYI Stanley was playing like this when he was 12/13 yrs old (on acoustic). And again he was discovered while playing an acoustic in the early 80's. Think about this and then do the math....:)

(btw, i'm from cleveland, too :) )
Considering someone successful is very subjective sometimes. IMO if he can get by just performing live and selling CD's and not having to work a day job he is successful in my book!
funny thing is he started out on the piano first.. picked up a guitar and said "why cant i play this the same way i play piano?" he makes it his own instrument, thats for sure
Jealousy doesn't even begin to start to describe the hate I feel for this man. Why even bother with lessons, there's no way i'm gonna be able to do anything near this.
@rmsolympic1 AAAAAAAAA YOU LOVE GUITAR EEEEEEEEE YOU LOVE THIS IN? YOUR FASHIT BLAK ASS REAL AHAHAHA STUPID BITCH SHUT UP YES BLAK IS RASSSSSSSSSSSIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIST
Very, very impressive. I can almost feel the soul he is at this very moment. For his ability to play the guitar like a piano, I will only say that it could be cleaner sounding. Which will acheive in due time through playing like that. Awesome upload, thanks.
The notes are all finger-tapping, if you're saying he lacks accuracy, you try tapping a bassline and harmonizing melody along with it... It's extremely difficult, i know, i've tryed it and failed miserably
Is this guy British? Why isn't he a household name in the States. I found this video after I did an Elenor Rigby search...had no idea who he was. But he's incredible.
@kozinc After reading your comment on Stanley's playing, I was surprised to be unable to find any videos of you playing an instrument. Maybe it's just me. Anyway, peace and blessings koznic!
I'm more of a singer. Besides, I specialise in musical criticism (the constructive kind, not the other kind). So, I'm not really for posting stuff - I go listenin' to all kinds of music and mark the better ones and think of ways to improve. Then, I post if I think there is a possibillity of a major improvement. So, while I know a lot about the music, I'm not as good at playing instruments. So, it's definitely not just you.
Hey, I don't do it for him, I'm doing it for anyone who might want to imitate him, so the imitation could be an improvement over the original. Besides, if he does read the comments (small chance), he'll know where to improve. ;)
yeah lemme break it down all you critics are hating because you cannot play this good if at all so you find some small mistake which IMO atleast proves this man is human...you call yourself a music critic, i call you a hater :) shut up this is DOPE. oh and not tryin to spam but i made a sloppy hip hop beat using samples from eleanor come check it out its called black magick curse. 5*
Don't get me wrong - I LIKE this guy. He has flaws, but he's still very good. So let me tell you this: if I didn't like him, I'd have made a list, not a single piece of advice. I hope that clears it up.
yeah, this shows he's good, but significantly far from the best guitarist ever, even the circle reserved for the hundreds of thousands of 'one of the best guitarists ever's' as named by modern society is far off for this one. Show us a video of him doing a Tommy Emmanuel song and then maybe he'll get there. Otherwise let me get back to my nap.
If he did a tommy emmanuel song he would demonstrate substantial skill. But skill is dull. It's the sheer passion and abandon with what he plays and puts into all the notes of this song that makes him a step above.
yeah but you cant tell me Emmanuel doesn't put passion into it. It's the combination of passion and skill that makes a good musician or band. His combination is off balance. He doesn't have enough skill to make it to the big time and he's got too much passion to just stop. That's why I say he should do a Tommy Emmanuel song-to capture the feel and technique of it. I personally don't think he could pull it off.
Stanley have being doing his thing since the early 80s and going strong, and about not making it big, those who like jazz knows about him, and the jazz market isent that big.
And please..dont compare to Tommy Emmanuel, two big diffrent styles, there is no comparing.
In my opinion, i dont care about Tommy Emmanuel and his soft core music.
If you dont agree, then go back to your nap then lol since dude..thats like just YOUR opinion. Not every dies for Tommy Emmanuel
1. its not about the "big time". its about whether or not you can play. robert johnson never made it to the big time and he s considered the godfather of the blues.
2. the dude can play. this video might not be the best example but i ve seen him throw the fuck down. the dude can play.
3. he is a very subtly word renowned musician. the people tat know about him know wat he s capable of. he s shared the stage with people like umphreys who in my opinion are among the best musicians out there
wow, a harvard music grad - and what sort of credentials make you, limpcracker, qualified to pass that sort of judgement? do you even know what you're looking at!??!?
@ThatLizardGuy, I take it that you' ve never heard of George Benson or Wes Montgomery or B.B. King or Howard Carol or Paul Jackson Jr or Chuck Berry (whom the "Beach Boys" stole from.) or Jonathan Butler or Earl Klugh. Don't get to the other end of that radio dial much do ya huh old chum?
@Gagagrr He is still traveling the world and playing and get paid major bucks for doing it. Les Paul gave him MAJOR props! What's your success threshold?
I taught myself to play like Stanley just by watching his videos. Only difference is I play acoustic. I've still got a lot of self-discipline to go before I'm on his level, but when I play for people who have never heard of Stanley, they think I'm the best guitar player in the world lol at which point I have to refer them to the master himself. I make really good money playing for tips though. If you have the natural talent, I suggest learning tapstyle because people love it.
drunken please dont even attempt to compare yourself to stanley jordan, i think ita funny you talk more about yourself here than you pay respect to stanley like you would if you were a legitimate guitarist
saw him live once, nothing like watching him play 2 guitars at same time in person. Was nothing short of phenomenal. I'll never understand why undeniable talent like this isn't properly acknowledged and rewarded.
This is where the word "gifted" is appropriate. You can't learn to do this. You have to be born with a gift. Thank the stars for gifted folk like Mr. Jordan!
He's coming to centre collee in Kentucky on Saturday, so excited

Jealousy doesn't even begin to start to describe the hate I feel for this man. Why even bother with lessons, there's no way i'm gonna be able to do anything near this.

For people like Jordan , Adrian Legg and a few others they had to throw out the top 10 scale and re write it to 15 or greater
These people are not human

Very, very impressive. I can almost feel the soul he is at this very moment. For his ability to play the guitar like a piano, I will only say that it could be cleaner sounding. Which will acheive in due time through playing like that. Awesome upload, thanks.

MY GOD Stanley is bad as Hell man.... Just SICK guitar... Jaw on the floor good...
virebel661 1 year ago
The notes are all finger-tapping, if you're saying he lacks accuracy, you try tapping a bassline and harmonizing melody along with it... It's extremely difficult, i know, i've tryed it and failed miserably

Not bad! Definitely prefer the beatles version, though!

Fens156 2 years ago
Far better than most of other version, but lacks a bit of precision on the higher notes. Still, considering the speed, quite satisfactory.
kozinc 2 years ago
@kozinc After reading your comment on Stanley's playing, I was surprised to be unable to find any videos of you playing an instrument. Maybe it's just me. Anyway, peace and blessings koznic!
Godsuhn 2 years ago
I'm more of a singer. Besides, I specialise in musical criticism (the constructive kind, not the other kind). So, I'm not really for posting stuff - I go listenin' to all kinds of music and mark the better ones and think of ways to improve. Then, I post if I think there is a possibillity of a major improvement. So, while I know a lot about the music, I'm not as good at playing instruments. So, it's definitely not just you.
kozinc 2 years ago
@kozinc i dont think stanley will read the comments on here somehow, but keep on if you want
Kyrano 1 year ago
Hey, I don't do it for him, I'm doing it for anyone who might want to imitate him, so the imitation could be an improvement over the original. Besides, if he does read the comments (small chance), he'll know where to improve. ;)
kozinc 1 year ago
yeah lemme break it down all you critics are hating because you cannot play this good if at all so you find some small mistake which IMO atleast proves this man is human...you call yourself a music critic, i call you a hater :) shut up this is DOPE. oh and not tryin to spam but i made a sloppy hip hop beat using samples from eleanor come check it out its called black magick curse.

LimpCracker 2 years ago
If he did a tommy emmanuel song he would demonstrate substantial skill. But skill is dull. It's the sheer passion and abandon with what he plays and puts into all the notes of this song that makes him a step above.
alteregoash 2 years ago
yeah but you cant tell me Emmanuel doesn't put passion into it.
LimpCracker 2 years ago
Lol dude take it easy.
Not every dies for Tommy Emmanuel
kefkahkefkah 2 years ago 2
you obviously don't know stanley jordan well...
and has this tommy emmanuel ever done letterman?
Jordan has done it MULTIPLE times...
da4500bass 2 years ago
1. its not about the "big time". its about whether or not you can play. robert johnson never made it to the big time and he s considered the godfather of the blues.
2. the dude can play. this video might not be the best example but i ve seen him throw the fuck down. the dude can play.
3. he is a very subtly word renowned musician. the people tat know about him know wat he s capable of. he s shared the stage with people like umphreys who in my opinion are among the best musicians out there
Bonzoandthemadhatter 2 years ago
wow, a harvard music grad - and what sort of credentials make you, limpcracker, qualified to pass that sort of judgement? do you even know what you're looking at!??!?

I'm not saying this in a racist way at all, but it's weird how you never see any black guitarists but when you do they're FREAKIN' AMAZING.
Like Jimi Hendrix.
ThatLizardGuy 2 years ago 2
Well, i dunno. Listen to more Jazz, Punk and Funk. Lots and lots of black guitarists out there, they just don't do much three chord rock.
alteregoash 2 years ago
@ThatLizardGuy, I take it that you' ve never heard of George Benson or Wes Montgomery or B.B. King or Howard Carol or Paul Jackson Jr or Chuck Berry (whom the "Beach Boys" stole from.) or Jonathan Butler or Earl Klugh. Don't get to the other end of that radio dial much do ya huh old chum?

Stanley Jordan can be classified as one of the best guitarist ever just by the sheer talent shown in this video. .."
Agreed. But, that doesn't make him God.
Eric Clapton isn't God either.

This is where the word "gifted" is appropriate. You can't learn to do this. You have to be born with a gift. Thank the stars for gifted folk like Mr. Jordan!
