this guys voice sucks so much balls. goddamn hippies.seriously guys, the guitarist here is dreaming of blowing an allman brother whilst school's is over there thinking bout whether he needs his insulin.wsp fans are sheep.maybe if they stopped drinking the kool-aid and paid attention to compostion they would stop listning to rote, monotonous bs like this.widespread is just riding a tide of stupid hippies. only the avett bros. are worse as far as bands that can be taken somewhat seriously.
saying herring played for the allman brothers is like saying Warren Haynes played for the grateful dead...its true, but an insult to jerry and duane. herring was, for all intents and purposes, in a cover band by the time he started playing with the allman bros...doesn't really blow my mind, sorry bro.
why are you so angry? shouldnt you be laughing? i know that im being nitpicky here, but you might wanna start running spell check... see you guys in athens ;)
one of the most ignorant statements ive heard on youtube and in general, congratulations, u might not like the sound but thats it,thats ur opinion, all the talk of hippies and blowing "whilst" , is the way ignorant pricks like yourself express your feelings about something you dont understand and therefore dislike
All the talk about WSP not being a good jam band, I disagree. They aren't Phish, Jazz is Dead and certainly not The Dead, but they are different, as are all jam bands. For example, The Dead without a doubt had more bluegrass/americana than Phish. WSP is a good band for those new to the scene b/c they are the easiest listen and most digestible. But I've seen them take off into a great orbit at several shows...but I've also seen them fairly bland at times, but I think they are a decent addition.
The only reason that housers licks are considered "panic's" sound is because they didn't have a better guitar player. not that is isn't good, because i think he is, however, comparing him to a virtuoso like Jimmy Herring isn't appropriate. thats not an apples to apples comparion. there is no way that houser could ever be in the same league as herring.
It doesn't matter who is/was the better guitarist. It was Houser's way of playing (and his 'sound') that I and so many other Panic fans fell in love with. For me, these super fast shredders are soooo incredibly boring to listen to. It's only speed these guys are interested in. Houser wasn't the best guitarist by a long shot, but the way he played was just so incredibly addictive to listen to. It was Houser's style that got me hooked on the band --enough said!
i have ben a fan since mid 90's and i agree with you. but dude, Jimmy gives much respect to Houser, listen to to the guitar solo around the 2:40 mark, he played it note for note as Houser would have...
I was just responding to BennieYahooRaines comment about Houser's 'mediocre' licks. We both know Houser was certainly not mediocre. Panic's Live in the Classic City is my favourite album, bar none. I love everything about the band's sound, but Houser's sound is something I'm addicted to. I need my fill every day.
I wasn't saying Jimmy was boring. What I was trying to say is: you don't need to be a super fast shredder to be a great guitarist.
I actually play guitar for a living. I've taught lessons... etc. Houser was indeed mediocre. I'm not knocking the guy, people loved him live because he hooked his volume wah up to pan from one side of the stage to the next... so anyone on acid's head would explode. But as far as technique, knowledge, and everything, Herring is one of the finest guitarists ever. Even Warren Haynes calls him "The Teacher." And Jimmy is a rare combination of taste and speed.
Bennie, all I'm saying is that it was Houser's own individual sound --mediocre, in your opinion, or not-- that attracted me to the band. It's Houser's style that has made the Live in the Classic City my absolute favourite CD ever. I am, like most guys, a guitar fan. All I'm saying is, like Clapton, you don't need to be a technical wizard to be a great guitarist. Clapton is a prime example of someone who plays beautifully without being technically brilliant. Houser, for me, is of the same ilk :)

I've got as much respect as the next guy for Houser's starting Widespread... but, Jimmy Herring was shredding ass at Berkely before Houser even thought about playing his mediocre licks in front of people. So I don't think comparing Houser to Herring makes any sense at all. Herring is a master, Houser was just noodling around.

finally someone who I can agree with about widespread panic...they are the most elementary of any so called jam band i have ever heard. if you want to hear real musicians, listen to Jazz is Dead. these guys must be paying Jimmy a ton of money! Houser was mediocre at best. good post!
I've heard JoJo off at times but he is a great player who is a huge part of the WSP sound. Mikey created the Panic guitar sound and it doesn't matter who is technically better but Jimmy Herring is the perfect guitarist for this band right now and they are playing at as high a level as they ever have.
jimmy is about 100 times better than houser anyone who plays can see that, but housers riffs are panic, its just important that herring doesnt lose sight of that, the band is definately better off now.
These negative comments re: Mikey are laughable if not ignorant. Facts are no Mikey = No WP.
Some of you rooks need to get a grip on reality and respect the legacy Mikey left us and celebrate the fact that this band is still creating music on a different level than most bands 22 years after the fact......RIP Mikey.
Boy Jimmy nailed that solo/bridge part. Supposedly he is a big student of the people he is put in for, and looks like he did his Mikey homework on this one, but still maintains his own sound. Great to see!
i thought JB only shaved his beard when the spring tour would start...he stopped that tradition a few years ago and in my humble opinion he looks more badass with the grizzly adams look...but most importantly he is a kickass musician and even more important a very wonderful human being
