  • well played....and a great sounding stick.

id like to be on that island in the background right now

    cheers

  • wow superb and very nice music.

  • Laga is a class above all others. His style echos the old playing ways of Mungayana etc from 60 years ago. If you want to play traditional techniques study this guy 24/7. If you can play anything like him then all other traditional styles are easy to adopt.

  • Playing anything like him ? :) kidding right?

  • Yes and no.

  • Class above all others?

    In a technical sense maybe?

Even though i am not a Yirdaki expert i can connect my understanding of classical drumming of South India to this in some ways.

Palghat Raghu was a genius technician and mathematical player (Adam Marrilaga style)

Umayalpuram Sivaraman a genius of rhythm, style and sound (Larry Winiwini style)

I am not sure if i can apply this comparison to yirdaki players but i think i can because i can sense it.

  • Gorgeous execution, Adam you genious!

  • I bet that was Larry shouting in the background! His trademark after the end of a solo.

  • 01:06 he starts an amazing technique.

  • After I have seen this video again and again I must say: "Laga is totally insane :)))))" How can he play that fast - i'm really trying to play the NEAL style for good, but no way I can play this fast og good!!!! Love traditional playing style - both the NEAL style and Charley Browns WAL style!

  • INCREDIBLE!!!Thanks again Guan!!!!Traditional playing Has SO MUCH RICHNESS to it!And so many textures!Modern style can't touch this type of playing!!!!!!!!!!!One question Guan, are the lines on this Yidaki the outlines of were it is to be painted? And if so do you know who is going to paint it?????Cheers Mate!

  • Hi Dante, the decoration on this yirdaki, those black lines, are just a fun thing, nothing serious. They are not outlines for later painting.

  • Brilliant, thank you!

    Colin

  • It is just SO cool - this is the NEW Larry Winiwini - hi hi :)))))

  • Very good

He may be shy but he didnt seem nervous really well played

    Great find

  • All I can say is.....WOW!! I love the story about Winiwini playing onto his back to pass on his teachings:-)

  • He is a Yankees fan? Love the stippled insignia. :D

Another young adult who is mastering this exquisite and unique musical language. And, yes, that's a very cool design on the yirdaki.

    Thank you for this video!

  • i'm speakless! :o

    this guy is amazing!!!!

  • The onlookers had to prompt and encourage Laga to talk... he is a shy young man who prefers to be away from the spotlight. I was lucky to get him on camera at all!

  • That was really nice. I was wondering If you happen to know a website on (ancient) ancestral stories of Aboriginals (Dreamtime), like for instance the story of creation. Thanks

  • There are a lot of Dreamtime creation stories among Indigenous Australians and they vary according to clan/tribe/geography etc. What sort of stories are you after and for what purpose?

  • Dear ididjaustralia, I am interested in all sorts of stories about the creation since I am in love with the Creator. Aboriginal ppl of Australia seem to have a well preserved oral tradition, that goes a long way back in time , I am sincerely interested as to how they perceive the world they live in and beyond. I have allways been fascinated by the english translation of the idea of 'Dreamtime', that's why. Thanx, bless

  • Fantastic, that was really good

  • Beautiful!

I really the sounds that Adam is making. Lovely stuff. Some really intricate balancing and execution. The first piece reminded me of Larry Winiwini's playing style a lot.

Thanks for showing us all this wonderful playing Guan.

    Cheers, Martin

  • I love the part from 3.44 to 3.52, very tricky and lovely syncopation.

  • Nice sound and very nice play too. Thanks buddy. without IDIDJ, we didge lovers are father-less :)

  • Hi Guan,

uncommon painting on this yirdaki, huh?

  • Floyd Dharamal decorated it that way... we call it the Spider Man yirdaki! It is one of two yirdaki that Marrilaga made and used as his personal instruments.

  • Amazing.....

  • Agreed!
