Hienoa Pogues, hienoa Irlanti. Sääli. ettei enää.....

  • An American loves the old Pogues. A wake made me think of the Pogues again. Fine Irish soul will go to heaven ... and we will remember his name: Mulligan.

  • Anuty Monica and Uncle Mick, hesnorelation, eh?

  • May I recommend the book 'A Concise Guide To Eighties Music' by Karl Vorderman. The author is a big fan of this track.

  • ahhh, 5th gen Aus - all irish - is that why I get choked up at the first chord?

  • I LOOOVE THIS SONG!!

  • I think this is by far my favorite pogues song, it not in the top 3.

  • long live shane mcgowan n jimmy fukin mcnulty

  • Wot a song....Only in our beloved Eire!

  • I just love this song...always have and always will...and it better be played at my funeral.

  • Love this! The tune pops up in my mind often...find myself humming it, whistling it, singing it often.

  • most be somthing with his date of birth the 25 of december becaus his music sounds fucking briliant and and tuomas holopainen in nightwish also makes fucking great music and that exsplains it when he is born in the same dat as shane macgowan =)

  • @perkele181 no offence mate but to put Tuomas Holopainen and Shane McGowan in the same sentence is sacrelige. One of them is best known for a very gay cover of a terrible Big Country song and the other is a complete trad punk legend...

  • After opening with streams of whiskey they played this both times I've seen them. Love this song and this band!

  • I just lost my twenty year old nephew and thank you Shane, this makes it a tiny bit better.

  • this song appeals to my Irish dna

  • the whistles part sounds like fairytale of new york

  • This was in the final episode of THE WIRE when Lester, McNulty and Kima are standing outside of Kavanaugh's.

  • Sláinte Mhaith!

    Shane will be missed!

  • I can't really find the right words to describe how i feel about this song, just a beautiful tune x

  • heard the men comin' from the fair at Shirronne, their hearts in Tipperary wherever they go.... FN GENIOUS!

  • Until the other day I thought the lyric was 'Were we onced watched the robots landing on the broad majestic shannon' and thought it was curious. I'm an idiot

  • @Soulinisolation1 Don't worry, you're not an idiot. I get confused all the time. In fact, I think "the robots landing" might have made the song even more awesome, if that's possible. And damn you, now that you mention it, I don't think I'll ever hear it again without thinking of robots!

  • @Soulinisolation1

Ha ha. I had t thumb that up I used to sing along the same

  • fucking brilliant

  • ……

  • can anyone help?

i heard this song played by a traditional group in croke park at half time in the waterford v tipperary all-ireland semi final in august 2010. they did a brilliant rendition of it. i don't know their name, but would like to look them up if i could.

  • @sugarpuffsandwich They are the Clara Ballad Group.. They won the scor all-ireland final in 2009 and 2010. If you look up the Clara Ballad Group on Youtube they have their rendition of The Broad Majestic Shannon and three other songs up. They would love to here your feedback on them! :)

  • @richjohnf - as well as the old triangle, the girl with brown eyes, and the band played waltzing matilda, dirty old town, navigator.........the list goes on - I couldn't put them in any order. All amazing and timeless.

  • @miriamnz yeah but i had an affair with the Body but im back here,id have to settle here.

  • Haven't heard this one in so many years. It's like meeting up with an old friend =) Terrific.

  • Awesome song

  • @richjohnf id put sayonara in there too, body of an american definitly my favorite

  • So many great songs from these guys, and this is one of them.

  • This is music without compromise,,,,

    Brilliance

  • TOTALLY is, but I might be considered "impartial" since they are singing to and about me ;-)

    *Shannon*

  • you have fantastic taste - most people would say fairytale of new york

  • Hurray! I finally have my own theme song!! RIGHTEOUS, **Shannon Famousface**

  • Because i love druken skulduggery and times are always good when Shanes about.

  • One of the best ever and thats that.

  • take my hand, and dry your tears babe,.. poetry

  • Awsome song.

  • It's not only the lyrics, but the melodies that have been brought straight down from heaven.

  • nah, it's bout a river

  • yep, shane mcgowan loves fatties

  • Dude, The Shannon's a river.

  • Idiot. Shannon is the name of Ireland's most iconic river. And those of us fortunate enough to be named after that river resent being called broads. Jackhole.

  • fuckin awesome

  • truly amazing this number

  • a rusty tin can and an old hurley ball :)

  • great great and once again j..GREAT

  • Great song....with so many references to places around Carney/Kilbarron where Shane's mother is from and where he spent many summer holidays, his grandaunt was married to a cousin of mine....he sings about "the cross of finnoe"...this is just a mile from my grandmothers house

  • @hesnorelation

That's a great claim to fame.

    Shane's a living legend.

  • there'll be whiskey on Sunday and tears on her cheeks

  • I love this fucking song......

  • im missin the fairytale of new york bit class tune tho

  • the beat is almost identical to fairytale of newyork

  • Yeah, you're right actually, the underlying beat is 6/8 and is about the same speed. Good observation.

  • Chord structure is similar too. I'm not sure if it's in the same key.

Eitherway both songs are still great.

  • True.

  • great song, the only version that I believe holds a candle to shane himself is on Tony Duggins solo album Undone where he covers this song

  • I completely agree. The version on Undone was marvelous.

  • Pure class,purely poetic.

  • great song wrote and sung by a living legend. a slower version is sung by folk singer liam clancy which is a pretty good cover.

  • What poetry.!! wonderful..

  • did shane mc gowan write this song?

  • yes

  • @mqc6 - Yes he wrote this masterpiece, pure joy to listen to It.....

  • The Bard Mcgowan at his finest..pure poetry..

  • this man sings with his heart..un artist, a real artist

  • This song is magical.

  • take my hand dry your tear's babe

    love shane he has heart

  • It doesn't get any better than this. A classic.

  • genius

    there's no more sorrow

    they've all gone

    gone in the years babe

  • yup, simple as.

  • even just reading these lyrics brings a lump to the throat

  • alot of em'll do that to ya

  • Hurry up and see them live you people that haven't, Shane won't be around forever - see a living leg end whilst you can

  • Think about it, go back 20 years and you´ll find songs like this...what the hell went wrong? ^^

  • Britney, Timberlake, Fergie, Simple Plan...American Idol THAT'S what went wrong! Oh well, its nice to at least see there are a bunch of people on here and still appreciate good music

  • i feel that this just isn't good music!! Its simply the best. Best written and performed! Pure genius!

  • you said it better than i did!

  • Ewreything turns to dust, music is dead all we hear is its memory........What started in the 50s died in the 80s, not ewen Cash is araond anymore.....

  • Sad but true

  • Most of todays music lacks heart and character and its way overproduced and contrived to boot.

  • Shane's problem is far more obvious than those of the troubled stars that went before him. He's ruined his life with booze, exemplified by his performance on Henry Rollins' show. It's more than sad, tragic, perhaps.

  • Huh????

  • I meant that Shane makes no attempt to hide his alcolism. Sorry that my first post wasn't very clear.

  • He sure doesnt

  • Still, I like them, especially this song and Dirty Old Town (even though they didn't write it).

  • shane ur a poetic genius.....

  • This song = poetic genius

    Bless you MacGowan

  • no matter how many times you listen to music of such beauty it never grows old you just stand idle barely capable to take your next breath cuz you are in awe of what is sounding in your ears

  • music that bribgs goosebumps to all those with a soul. inspiring

  • magic! seems to me i'm able to view the River Shannon flowing downstream ... :)

  • la cancion un 10, el video un 11

  • This song is magical. That just sums it up for me. The Pogues at their best, fronted by a true genius.
