  • Amazing to think that Andrew was only like 16 when they filmed the movie.

  • actually it was the 90's not 80's and most probably 1991, the year the film was made/released. Saw the Commitments (inc 4 original band members I think) in my hometown and had the privelage of spending the rest of the evening with them after the show in a local pub. Groupee or what! A big disapointment when arriving at the show was Andrew wasn't there, however, the performance was excellent - brilliant night during and after. In my top ten favourite films, easy.

  • fantastic voice and singer and great film. Unfortunatly he never really had a chance to make it big coz he didn't have the looks for 12 yo girls to have a crush on, he didn't sing like a faggot, and he was never in some pathetic reality tv talent show!! oh and he sang real music:)

  • Van Morrison 2!!!!!!!!!!

  • where did he go?

  • Fantastic! Superb voice and version of this song.

  • great history of mine, back with Otis Redding

  • superb is me

  • OMIG what a voiiiiice!!!!!!!!

  • Reminds me of Joe Cocker with the facial expressions.

  • He was actually 16 :|

  • Best, since Otis himself!

Can't believe the boy was 19 when he did the Commitments, though production probably lasted 1-2yrs, making it even more extraordinary for such a young man to carry a voice worthy of multiple lifetimes of ups & downs.

Definitely, one of the only FEW 'white vocalists' that truly hit those perfect soulful notes.

  • This is to the guy who's my sister's boyfriend.

Please treat her like a princess...

    if not...

I'll play Italian Baseball with you. Cuz you don't wanna mess with Italians!

  • Talk about people sing with all heart and soul.. even beat Joe Cocker...

  • That tart can sing oh Jesus!

  • Great Facials :D

  • for my money Otis Redding and his 5 piece band from the early 60's knock the living shit out of this tune

  • @cushinb Hell YES! I've never understood the buzz generated by this poser. It seems to me his main talent is imitation.

  • He tears this song up and makes it right!!! AWESOME AWESOME Singer!!

  • Great voice.

  • Awesome song!

But.. in the 80's.. maybe you meant the 90's..

    :-)

  • ive seen him 4 times live and hes incredible! cant wait to see him again!!

hes talented, witty and a gentleman!

there is no filter between what he sings and what he feels! AWESOME voice

  • Guess why this is called Soul Music ?

-can't sing this if u ain't got soul in ur voice ... and he's got that ^^

  • Bloody awesome!

  • The Commitments is a fantastic movie, & Andrew can wail!

  • The boy can certainly sing.

  • Would LOVE to hear a duet with Andrew Strong and Adele!!!

  • @chriscat2426 A great Idea ... bring it on .

  • he was only 16 when he was casted in the commitments film, but his dad rob strong is an irish musician

  • He is great, and the movie The Commitments is fantastic!

  • He was 23 when The Commitments came out.

  • @TahoeVista no he was 16

  • @TahoeVista 16 wen it started and 17 wen they finished making the film

  • I thought andrew was gonna take the globe like a storm when the movie came out then heard sfa! what a powerhouse! his voice shifts tectonic

  • Awesome song and movie! One of my favorites!

  • Damn :-)

  • AMAZING, WONDERFUL, MARAVILHOSO, SUBLIME......

  • Sorry for bad video quality, but it worth seeng!

  • so geil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • so geil!!!!!!!!!

  • I love songs like this that have such a great build up ... everyone is anticipating the big chorus. So cool!

  • Is that Dean "Mr. Nipple" Fay on sax, because it looks just like him?

  • Excellent.. What happened to him anyway?

  • He is amazing.

  • the movie was bettter than the Big Chill; sound track also!

    wolfetone427

  • He was only 16 when they made 'The Commitments'!

  • OTIS DIED AT THE AGE OF 26

  • This is pretty good but Otis makes this song!

  • Joe Cocker Jr. & a darn fine job he does! Where is this today? It's lost is where it is & that is sad!!!

  • Andrew is one ugly dude, but a phenominal voice

  • Why the hell didn't Andrew Strong make more of an impact the music world and become more famous? There ain't many with a voice like that.

  • @DrRinse I just saw The Commitments on TV BBC America

last week. (Had seen it before, but forgot how truly great Andrew

Strong is. I've wondered the same as you've stated.

  • @DrRinse because he is fat and the music industry is more about image than actual talent. as sad as it is.

  • @DrRinse - Doing well in the UK and Scandanavia. Lives in Sweden, got a couple of solo albums out. Get his Greatest Hits, excellent album !!!!!

CHECK out Vancouver Jazz and Blues Burnaby BC!

I shall be there to see you with thousands! : ) Awesome VOICE!

  • Joey "the lips" Fagan; last heard he was touring with Joe Tex.

  • Wheres Louie "the Lips?"

  • As simple as it sounds, the bass part on this is hard to play, such subtle timing

  • he reminds me of Joe Cocker

  • @joeluis98 funny you say that

  • Fuck this boy can sing... voice of God right there, mate!

  • @Deeppack God should ask for it back! :)

  • @Deeppack and to think he was 16 when he was in the movie....

  • Irish dutchman......id say your an ugly fucker too...lol

  • Ugly fucker, amazing voice!

  • outstanding

  • As much as I love Otis, Andrew really has made this song his own, can't see anyone ever doing a better cover

  • For a guy just turned 16 years old this is an incredible performance, mature so far beyond his years. What a talent

  • This song has been a real discovery for me! Real music!

It's a pity that nowadays no one makes such a great music...

  • @Levan1231

let just enjoy both versions. Who's better does not matter.

  • Apples and oranges. Both versions are great. It's like comparing Joe Cocker and Ringo Starr singing With A Little Help From My Friends. It's a joy to listen to either one.

  • This is NOT from the 1980s. The actual film 'The Commitments' wasnt filmed until 1991 They discovered Andrew Strong at around the same time.

  • @starryian007

Your absolutely correct....its at least 1991

  • @starryian007

Your absolutely correct....its at least .

  • @starryian007

    Your absolutely correct....its at least 1991 .

  • What happened to this guy? whats he up 2 now?

  • @1981Alansmith he's part of the commitments reunion next year

  • To say this is better than the Otis Redding version is a huge disrespect. I suggest you go listen again. Otis was not only the greatest performer of this song but one of the best singers in history. Go look up his version of this song at the Monterey pops festival.

  • @Talista You are simply giving your opinion - Otis Redding is not objectively better than Andrew Strong, nor vice versa. You simply prefer him and are invoking the "respect" clause in a bid to back up your notion of "greatest" version. I happen to like this version and one or two others much more than that of Redding, whose voice really does nothing for me. I don't say OR is bad, or that I am right, which would be ridiculous. I have my personal preferences as you have yours, that's all.

  • @Talista

    MY OPINION > YOUR OPINION.

  • ok this is good but when otis san this it became magic.. this is good but otis was amazing.... WATCH THE VIDEO!!! of otis singing this live nothin compares.

  • I saw this movie when it first came out and never forgot it. years later I had the chance to buy the video and fell in love all over again. Now I have the collectors edition DVD, and gave a copy to my mother as well. Andrew Strong has so much heart and soul, and the balls to belt out the music in the way it was meant to be sung. I still get goosebumps listening to him. I also have his solo CD's (2) but I keep coming back to this...after all, as Joey 'the Lips' says: This way, its poetry.

  • Brill

  • Brilliant voice and actor!

  • The White Otis !

  • @ex59neo53 No, better.

  • I loved the movie, but Andy should of made a real career at it

  • This can't be the 80's, the film came out in 1991, so this is th early 90's at the earliest.

  • @kazimann true i didnt even think Johnathon Ross had a tv show til lthe 90s?

  • Great voice. I´m wondering what the guy is doing now.

  • The guiltiest of all my pleasures....

  • The thing that sets Andrew apart is that 110% emotional commitment to whatever he is performing. It is a rare characteristic in performers and defines true artists from great performers. You don't have to have the best voice to move people if you pour your heart and soul into what you do

  • This man is electric.

  • I love Andrew's voice. A true soul and bluesman!!

  • During the auditions for the roles in The Committments movie Andrew was the studio singer. All of the singers they auditioned weren't as good as Andrew so they cast him in the movie.

  • Awesome!! Can i be your Amelda Corke?

  • isnt one of the sax players the same as in the film? Also how can it be the 1980s when film didnt come out till early 90s?

still good though, film version is better though.

  • @steveryan124 : the film was set in the 1980s, when the Republic of Ireland was seriously economically depressed. I first went there in 1988; things were fairly terrible back then. Many young Irish nationals emigrated overseas, following in the footsteps of their ancestors.

  • @smhorse The film was made in 1990 (released in 1991). Indeed the country was in dire straits then, we came out of it (Celtic Tiger), but now the recession hit us hard yet again.

  • i love the commitments movie,it did massive things for soul music, andrew strong is now one of my fav soul voices--check out my facebook group-scottmac singerman-cheers

  • He can really belt them out !!! 17 when he did the Committments movie, only gotten better since then !!!!!!

  • anyone who comes across this vid check out the film the commitments one of the greatest irish films out there

  • makes u wanna get up and dance and sing so loud love it

  • no disrespect to Otis Redding... but the first time i heard this song was by Andrew Strong in the Commitments and nothing has beaten it as of yet... love it

  • @NiceView23 i feel the same way

  • @NiceView23 You've never heard Otis sing it apparently.

  • @jjpete7 i've heard the original Otis Redding version... its just i fell in love with this version first, so this can't be beat for me

  • @NiceView23 Otis aside, this band, and especially the drummer , have nothing on Booker T and the MGs. Watch the Otis version again during the Stax tour...its musically amazing. Not to say that this version wasn't great, but the stax band is what made the otis version what it is.

  • @NiceView23 I agree, although I prefer the Otis version of many other songs, like Love Man, Tramp, Dock of the Bay, These arms of mine and I've been loving you too long, among others.

  • That's my moms exboyfriends friend :D

  • Probably not from the 80's seeing as how the movie came out in 91

  • J adore depuis la sortie du film au cinéma!! dans les années 90 j'adoooore les commitments!!

  • what a brilliant performer how come we never hear of him

  • @robbiejs1 ?????? Went to America - got swallowed up...

  • @robbiejs1 - Watch "The Commitments". Buy his solo albums, especially his Greatest Hits. Brilliant !!!!!!!

  • @robbiejs1 they reformed for 4 concerts in Ireland in March 11. check them out on you tube

  • That man can sing.....flat out...

  • he had the best voice live I have ever heard

  • Say it and say it loud.

    I'm Irish and I'm Proud.

  • Does he always perform like that or is he making fun of Joe Cocker?

  • He always performs like that, he's not making fun of Joe Cocker. If you watch the movie The Commitments you'll see. He was only 16 in it.

  • that voice just gives me the goosebumps,, truely epic,, love it

  • he is so good. I saw him in The Commitments when i was 8 and just loved that movie.

  • What a voice, great heartfelt performance

  • discopants1973....with a pseudonym like that ,you call Andrew Strong a dick, let me know what you see in the mirror!!

  • People like andrew make being irish cool.LOL

  • marry me Andrew!

  • Andrew Strong died.......really?

  • No. He's alive and well and planning another tour. Check his website. lol

  • i LOVE him!

  • @spareaxe NO !!! He lives in Sweden now I think, home studio there, still cranking out albums .....

  • i was waiting for the 'fandango'

God, i love him. I can't believe how young he is in this. Still gorgeous though.

Thanks for posting this, I'd have never seen it otherwise.

  • sad..... a big talent lost......

  • he was only 16 when he acted in the comitments

  • Not the 80's but good vid!

  • reminds me of joe cocker.

  • you´re right. Joe Cockers voice had cost more whiskey. Andrew Strong was not old enough t0o consume so much.

  • Andrew Strong from The Commitments has the soul to be the new Mr. Las Vegas. Hey casino Marketing Directors. You want to pack us rollers in, feature this guy in concert.

  • He is the son of Rob Strong, an Irish Soul singer.

He is a singer, and not necessarily an actor, so he sings.

    Four platinum albums and counting.

  • he was blessed with one of the most soulful voices

  • what a voice

  • on the movie, deco makes the same Andrew's facial. it was perfect. the actor looks like Andrew.

  • what your talking about?

andrew plays deco on the movie!

  • now i know about this. tanks. the first time when i saw this movie, i was thinkng it was an actor.. sorry, I'm an idiot

  • This guy should have had it all. What an amazing talent.

  • what ever happened to him? the man has more talent than any x factor, idol or any other stuff like that put together

  • Absoluter Hammersong!

    Starke Stimme, sehr gute Band.

    Erste Sahne!!!

  • He is such a talented singer!

  • He-he Dean Fay (sax) is there too...

  • This guy can wail something fierce.

  • andrew was only 16/17 in the commitments and his voice was fucking amazing not just for his age but in general.

  • top deco, or bottom deco.. always top deco. the greatest voice not to make it in the big time.

  • Saw the same at the Ramshead venue - it was all upper Deco - amazing voice - kid on the SG was deadly - recommend catching the tour this summer

  • saw this guy this past monday and hes still got it, i didnt know he could rip guitar as well

  • Where did you see him?

  • What a wonderful voice.I love this music.Tknx for this video

  • Minor detail but I doubt this was in the 80's. I think The Commitments came out in '90 or '91.

  • The movie was released in 1991, so I imagine this live performance happened sometime in the '90's. Andrew Strong has a website where, indeed, the greatest voice NOT to make it can be heard. He was robbed, man. He is great!

  • I agree. What a staggering voice and talent. How did he not go on to be massive worldwide, or even just in the UK for that matter? He must have had some shockingly inept management and advisors.

  • Great song Ottis Reading would be made up to hear Andrew sing it so good.

  • Andrew is a fantastic soul singer he makes the music sing

  • Gràcies Joan....!!!!!

  • Just fab!!!!

  • "Is it top Deco or bottom Deco!"

  • I am going to see Andrew Strong at the Sellersville Theater in August!! !!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!

  • You lucky dog...let us know how things went...the dude can definitely sing.

  • To be fair, Strong was only 16 when this was recorded and he was nominated for a Grammy the same year - pretty phenomenal.

  • Flipping heck, I had no clue...I mean about the Grammy bit. Does he have any CD's out...I know I would purchase his stuff...wouldn't mind having his music on my ipod...

  • I don't think it was for an individual performance. It was for the movie album. But I do remember them performing live at the Grammys with a great intro by host Whoopi Goldberg.

  • Maybe gapman, but I speak the truth !
