  • I understand this completely. When you devote yourself, when your extend yourself so desperately to a cause or some sort of perceived purpose, you lose that purpose. You lose a sense of drive when you can never reach the insurmountable goal that all people, at one point or another, fantasize about. The difference between McNulty and those with a life, is that they don't go searching desperately for the goal; it finds them.

  • I'm assuming that what Freamon says naturally applies to most occupations.

  • @ruinawish what Freamon is saying is that even if everyone 'gets together and says sh1t he was right all along' you're still in a room with yourself, everything in between, whether you win or not, is what counts.

  • come on!!... freamon was the man, when i saw this for the first time remainds me to john lennon in beautiful boy when say "life is what happens to you while your busy making other plans" is a natural teacher of life...

  • Natural Police.

  • @Jeff652854000 Fuck yes, Natural Police

  • All of the main actors and the show should have gotten an emmy

  • "A life. You know what that is? It's the shit that happens while you're waiting for moments that never come."

Got a new quote for Facebook.

  • yeah i just realized the sort of family they've become with those pics on the fridge

  • This scene was pure poetry. It's as timeless and true as anything written by Eugene O'Neill, Arthur Miller, or Tennessee Williams. "The Wire" should have ended its run with a shelf load of Emmy awards for writing and acting. That it didn't shows just what a mockery the Hollywood awards industry really is.

  • Amen.

  • 'Life is the shit that happens while your waiting for moments that never come.' Some would read that as pessimistic, but Lester is wise.

  • @hdtwoodsman its as true and real as it gets.

  • Ok I've never heard anyone say Lester is hot.

But anyways, this is a big line, one of my favorites, I really try to think about what I do each day sometimes. You've really got to have something outside a job

  • Lester is so right. You arrest one guy there'll be another guy you have to arrest the next day. There's never going to be a day were you singlehandedly eliminate all the crime in the city. Eventually what your going to have to have is a life and a family. Being a cop is a job, not a life.

  • This scene is one of many from The Wire that really made me think.

  • First of all, this was one of the best scenes in what I believe is the best show ever. Thank you for posting it.

I've worked for twelve years as a prosecutor. Whenever I get too wrapped up in a case I tell myself to listen to Lester's words of wisdom. This shit doesn't make you whole. You've got to have something else.

  • one of the best speeches ever.

  • i loved this scene

  • I'm about to use this clip for an essay I'm writing, could someone let me know what episode this was from?

  • Episode no. 34 "Slapstick"

For your essay, I suggest you focus on the "Dickensian Aspect" :p

  • Thanks, I'm actually comparing Rick Deckard to McNulty for the essay. This scene was perfect for what I needed. Thanks though! ^_^

  • lester iz hawttt!!!

  • Lester was telling something for his own good. Find a hobby or something.

  • UP THE IRISH

  • He should've listened to freamon. R.I.P McNulty :(

  • the fuck are u talkin about? mcnulty isn't dead!

  • I know. I said it because his careers over and so is the wire. I should've wrote, i'll miss mcnulty. I didn't think ppl would take the RIP seriously.

  • he did listen to Lestar. he got with Beadie Russell

  • its gotta piss mcnulty off that freamon is right all the time. haha, freamon's a true teacher.

  • I love this part because it foreshadows him going back to Beadie Russell at the end of the third season

  • I never saw that pic at 1:11 before. Amazing detail!

  • Greatest television show ever.

  • "It's the shit that happens while you wait for moments that never come."
