I understand this completely. When you devote yourself, when your extend yourself so desperately to a cause or some sort of perceived purpose, you lose that purpose. You lose a sense of drive when you can never reach the insurmountable goal that all people, at one point or another, fantasize about. The difference between McNulty and those with a life, is that they don't go searching desperately for the goal; it finds them.
@ruinawish what Freamon is saying is that even if everyone 'gets together and says sh1t he was right all along' you're still in a room with yourself, everything in between, whether you win or not, is what counts.
come on!!... freamon was the man, when i saw this for the first time remainds me to john lennon in beautiful boy when say "life is what happens to you while your busy making other plans" is a natural teacher of life...
This scene was pure poetry. It's as timeless and true as anything written by Eugene O'Neill, Arthur Miller, or Tennessee Williams. "The Wire" should have ended its run with a shelf load of Emmy awards for writing and acting. That it didn't shows just what a mockery the Hollywood awards industry really is.
But anyways, this is a big line, one of my favorites, I really try to think about what I do each day sometimes. You've really got to have something outside a job
Lester is so right. You arrest one guy there'll be another guy you have to arrest the next day. There's never going to be a day were you singlehandedly eliminate all the crime in the city. Eventually what your going to have to have is a life and a family. Being a cop is a job, not a life.
First of all, this was one of the best scenes in what I believe is the best show ever. Thank you for posting it.
I've worked for twelve years as a prosecutor. Whenever I get too wrapped up in a case I tell myself to listen to Lester's words of wisdom. This shit doesn't make you whole. You've got to have something else.

I'm assuming that what Freamon says naturally applies to most occupations.

'Life is the shit that happens while your waiting for moments that never come.' Some would read that as pessimistic, but Lester is wise.

Ok I've never heard anyone say Lester is hot.

I'm about to use this clip for an essay I'm writing, could someone let me know what episode this was from?
murdamuzik23 3 years ago
Episode no. 34 "Slapstick"
For your essay, I suggest you focus on the "Dickensian Aspect" :p

Thanks, I'm actually comparing Rick Deckard to McNulty for the essay. This scene was perfect for what I needed. Thanks though! ^_^
