  • Great comparison. Thank you very much for sharing.

I preffer the Garmin colours, but I think the voices on TomTom are much clear than Garmin!! I just bought a Garmin nüvi 1390T and it stop working. I'm waiting for almost one month to get it back. I'm really not surprised with it, and wish I had bought the TomTom. =/

  • if you look on ebay you see a lot more garmins for sale as parts or not working. is it because they fail sooner or is it because there is so many more sold

  • going on an 800 mile trip (one way) and had a garmin. was going to take the tomtom but didnt. less then half way there the garmin froze and would not work. had to find my way back using my Iphone. tomtom is close to 6 years old and still works like a charm.

this is not to say garmin isnt a good company but my experience tells me that tomtom is a good name. I will stick with it from now on. just my experience.

  • Garmin looks so much more understandable

  • I like garmin better it laggs less and its rerouting system is better also it picks better directions, at least tom tom is better than navman lol

  • last year on blackfriday I bought a tom tom from walmart for 80. but it was too difficult to use so I return it and then I bought a garmin from bestbuy for 100 and it is alot easier to use and its very good.

    garmin - good

tom tom - difficult to use.

  • @gtdodgeviper i dont know why you say tom toms are hard to use. i know my grandma uses one so does a lot of people i know. they are the worlds best selling gps brand for a reason

  • @toyota420xp Maybe it just that I didn't took the time to learn to use it. But when I got the Garmin every thing was just more easier to use. and faster

  • If you have money you buy Tomtom, if you are poor buy Garmin.

  • @hopala007 TomTom's are about 50 dollars [pocket change] higher than Garmin's lol and they do the same exact thing but has different screens. Rich or poor has nothing to do with getting to your destination.

  • Tomtom Ok..Garmin000000000

  • garmin is better than tom tom i have garmin200,tomtom one hate the tomtom worst gps ever never have i had one problem or been mad at the garmin,,'GARMIN 200'

  • I have owned both. They both will get you to your point of interest, but I have had problems with the tt telling me to make a left on a freeway. The maps are much better on a garmin and the routing is nicer. The tt has better reception than the garmin. I think for your best bang for your buck and ease of use I would recommend the garmin when comparing models of equal value.just my 2cents worth

  • well to me the TOM TOM come out on top by miles.. but whitch one good for truckers?

  • не знаю, у меня гармин Nuvi 200, я вполне доволен, съездил из Ярославля в Стокгольм и обратно - ни разу не подвел, а в карту я вообще не смотрел - просто вводил адрес в навик.

I have Garmin, and I like it!

  • i hate the non qwerty garmin. :/ but its a sacrifice...

  • Garmin is simpler to use and cheaper, you can pick up a used one on ebay for around 50 bucks

  • The Garmin is much simpilar to use. My grandma can figure out how to use a Garmin. The TomToms are stupid, more expensive, and alot harder to use than Garmins. If you want a Wide screen and an awesome GPS than Go with the Garmin Nuvi

  • ur wrong, tomtom costs less

  • wich one comes with the computer dock and/or fm transmission? can i load music on it and transmit over radio?

  • Thank you for the vid - very useful

  • How could you compare an entry level garmin on a mid range tomtom? Ofcourse the better choice is the tomtom but put together a tomtom go 520 with a garmin 8xx, a tomtom would be no match..beyond compare..

  • I hate my TT 520 because it keeps turning on by it's self which means everytime i go 2 use it the battery is dead. I google searched it & it's a common problem THANKS VERY MUCH TT.

  • in the UK you dont have to drive very far, its a tiny country

  • i like the garmin i waaaay bettar

  • I have a garmin, tom tom, and a magellan so I don't need to choose....

  • So which is better?

  • I just bought a tomtom go 730 two weeks ago and I'm hoping someone can teach me how to start my search by address first instead of city. This is so important for me if you know how to do it let me know please.

  • I owned a Garmin nuvi360 had it for over a year, wanted me to turn off a cliff on a direction to a park. So I bought a cheap tomtom one 3rd edition..and love it.. Used it for only 5 months. Just sold my garmin, staying with tom tom..

  • I had a tomtom one

    and a garmin 250

    AND THAT FUCKIN GARMIN SUCKS

  • You should do this demo but with a couple of celebrity voices. I would always recommend Mr. T from Navtones but the choice is yours.

Great demo. I think I favor TomTom but I think that's because TomTom was the first GPS I had. Nice one.

  • My father in laws tom tom died in less than six months, so I bought a Garmin and so far I love this device. I have also read on the net that other tom toms have over heated from being plug in to long and stop functioning. be careful with tom toms save backup data in case they crash or you will have to buy their expensive maps online, just a word of warning I had to repair one of these once it froze on splash screen and was a night mare to get it functioning again.

  • You can always tell the people who haven't got a clue what they're doing because they always have a sat nav.

  • garmin is better

much better the only thing i cant figure out id how can i get it to tell me the full distance to my jurney instead of the distance to my next manover. can someone help?? please...

  • I have used both different types...i loved the garmin ..until i realised the map share possiblities with tomtom..but does anyone know if you can find parks.and scenic detour routes as well with the tomtom.?.??

  • we have a tom tom now but just bought a garmin nuvi 260w its supposed to be a better system we had nothing but problems with our tom tom

  • My wife got me a TomTom ONE 3rd Edition for my birthday, and it's not accurate. Well, I guess most of the roads are right, but on one highway that hasn't had any changes in over 10 years it was telling me to take an exit that wasn't there, or the screen has me taking an exit while I'm actually at a halfway point between 2 exits, so I know it's off, but which exit was I supposed to take? The one I passed, or the one that I haven't got to yet? I'm gonna take it back for a Garmin.

  • If the Garmin does the same thing, then I'll just go back to using map quest with google earth.

  • i drove from fort lauderdale, florida to chicago with my tomtom and it was awesome. no problems at all. very accurate

  • use tomtom home once in a while to update the maps and the satellite location for faster recognitino

  • I did update it. Anyway I dont have it anymore.

  • Did you get the Gamin already? I'm going to buy another gps for Christmas because ours causes trouble very similar to how you just explained with yours. If so tell me if it's better.

  • No, I didn't buy one yet. I did play around with one at Circuit City, and it actually had my house in the right spot, which the tomtom I had didn't. So thats a plus for Garmin already.

  • Yeah the biggest problem with mine is that if I'm looking for some place I've never been it says I've arrived when really I'm just in a mile radius of the place and I've gotta start looking all over.

  • I have had three different GPS units now and now have one, Tom Tom. Living in Canada seems to be an issue with Garmin. The map updates are lousy and do not have updated features for very much outside of the USA. Tom Tom gave us what we needed and will be sticking with it.

  • If you're shocked about the garmin map updates, I'd bet it all that you haven't tried one. If you did, you'd realize why they need so few updates. When something constantly needs updates, it's not always a good thing. Take the iPhone for example. I've heard nothing but trouble about its firmware updates. Luckily, it's very pretty, so we can live with it.

  • What a piece of shit Garmin that is. I would never trust Garmin for any directions. TomTom beats Garmin in every way possible overall.

  • I have a Gamin, then bought a Tomtom ONE XL. I had problems emailed customer support....NO RESPONSE in a MONTH now! What the hell is that? Also Garmin BLOWS tomtom away in what matters. Sometimes directions from my TomTOm are PATHETIC. Also they have NO POI's, that s crap. If I'm out and about and need to go to a specific shop...my Gramin has places listed with numbers etc...Tomtom has Diddly. I'm selling mine.

  • Why would you ''email'' customer support. In order to get a truly comprehensive service, why not just pick up the phone and call them. From my experience, TomTom provides ''phenomenal'' support which literally could not be beat. That's how good it is. I have had nothing but crappy experiences with Garmins. Their internal processors are god-awfully slow, meaning that their not even in true-time.

  • Not so sure about TomTom's Mapshare feature which allows users to update maps based on changes made by other users. Sounds a lot like trusting Wikipedia's content to always be correct and true.

  • Hmm i really hope that mien is good because im getting the Garmin 760 its already been shipped to me so im waiting for it and hope its a damn good piece of a GPS and its not the 200 series its the 700s so hmmm

  • The baby naming was just a cheap shot (I just think it's a bit silly). My post was to point out how the comparison is unfair and is biased towards TomTom. In any case, I've heard people complain more about their TomTom than Garmin. In fact, I've never heard anybody complain about their Garmin. When I was shopping for a GPS, Garmin was always listed as #1. Perhaps TomTom needs to update its maps so often because they didn't get it correct the 1st time. Garmin's yearly update is always superb.

  • I don't understand why you would compare these two models. The tomtom go 720 vs garmin nuvi 660 would be a much better comparison (both were available at the time of your review). Also, both can be purchased for under $350 online. In my opinion, garmin has the best automotive gps for use in north america - hands down. Just look at the names... tomtom? Really? Sounds like a baby named it.

  • I rent from Avis a lot and the GPS they offer is always a Garmin. I've used at least two of their models including a Nuvi that looks and operate exactly like the one shown here although I cannot tell you exactly which model exactly. My experience is that the Garmins are way too slow to react, sometimes telling me to turn when it's too late for me to do so. I'm gonna be looking at a Tomtom for my personal use.

  • I think the comment that the user ''lipidfats'' made, was retarded. The type of name has nothing whatsoever to do with the quality of a product. Look at the name Toyota, which is a Japanese manufacturer. I could say that this name sounds like a damn ''toy''. However, Toyota engines are known to last some of the longest with the least amount of flaws.

  • First, if you read my comments, you would realize the name comment was just a jab at a brand that I already think is inferior in quality. I don't need to pick at their ridiculous choice in name to realize I'm not interested in their products.

Second, your comparison to Toyota is "retarded." Toyota came from the family name of the man who started Toyota, it's perfectly legit. "TomTom" on the other hand is just childish.

  • lipidfats, Garmins only release map updates once a year? What kind of stupid bullshit is that? Do you have any idea how fast roads, houses, businesses are built? That's the dumbest shit I've ever heard. That's like getting anti-virus definitions updated once a year.

  • Lipidfats, I seriously hope Garmin doesn't really release map updates only once a year. If that's true, then Garmin is completely useless. Once a year? Does that make any sense? of course NOT! TOMTOM FTW!

  • Once a year because they get it right. Do you have any idea how many complaints there have been about TOMTOM's updates... I have a lot of friends who swear by their tomtom, but admit they've noticed a lot more errors than they've noticed with my Garmin. I've never had a problem with my maps.. I live in Orlando, so it's not like I live in an area that's never changing. I've used a tomtom before and it just didn't compare, but that's my opinion.

  • My experience with Garmin maps has been entirely the opposite. I live in Raleigh, NC in the research triangle and the Garmin that I bought, registered, and updated LAST WEEK is missing interstate and highway data that is over 2 years old! Two year old interstate data? That's obscene.

If a gps ISN'T constantly updating their maps, they're not getting those changes, which means they're out of date.

On an up side, Garmin maps are so problematic, there are already lots of hacks.

  • Atorax,

Well that does seem a little odd. Interstate data that's two years old should definitely be on there. I live in FL and I've never had a problem with data. I will be going skiing in NC soon, so I'll see how that goes. Please give me an address near this Interstate you speak of... i'd like to see for myself.

I constantly hear people complain about tomtom's screwed up maps that if they didn't have constant updates, they'd probably be out of business... which isn't the case with garmin.

  • plain and simple if you live in the usa get a garmin its what most of the over-the-road truck drivers use as well in America tom tom is dumb dumb

  • This is not a good comparison because you are using a more advance version of the tomtom. That version of garmin can be found for under 200. I think you should have used a tomtom One. Which goes for the same price or a higher version of the Garmin to be on par.

  • will the tt wor in UK, i have to go ther for bussiness and i want to take one

  • I have both garmin and tom tom 720 go and use them in ireland and found that the garmin is very innacurate and maps are rubish compared to the tom tom

  • Siis voi vittu saatana! ainut mitä tämä video todistaa että noi ulkolaiset navigaattorit on kamalia paskoja, epäselviä, vaikeita ja hitaita, onneks en ostanut tommosta paskaa vaan nokian.

  • Man, what is up with all the current model TomTom's being so damned cuggy moving along the maps. My TomTom Go 700 aka Classic now runs so much smoother even when the screen is flooded with roads.

  • tomtom better features, garmin better menus, maps

  • I purchased tomtom last November in decemeber they made a map upgrade to version 7.10. Tomtom allowed me to download the new map for free. They have mapshare from December to till date I can download 14220 map updates. Navteq more accurate than teleatlas is the old story now. I would say tomtom maps are more accurate than garmin maps. I own both garmin and tomtom. Search for the following address in garmin u will not find it but u will find it in tomtom maps.

    42 sagamore ln,bordentown nj

  • Guys another advantage with tomtom apart from mapshare is it has user replacable battery. Garmin battery is welded to the unit.If garmin battery goes bad you have to send it to the garmin which they charge $200+ for replacement.

  • Garmin IS better navigation wise, albeit not feature wise. Better POI database and more complete maps than the TT.

  • Rubbish, TomTom has Far better maps, they are up to date as in TODAY. Due to map share.

  • Not here in North-America. TT is from your neck of the woods, the UK. Garmin is a US manu. and therefore has better maps of North-America, whereas the TT has better maps of Europe/UK.

  • You can change the maps yourself on TomTom. and share it with the rest of the USA. Garmin doesnt have that great feature which is why I said The maps are better and more up to date as users correct/amend the maps.

  • Matter of personal preference. TT are better in Europe, Garmins are better for North America in my experience, despite MapShare. Garmin's MapSource is more accurate in many respects.

  • I do not think you can add roads on a TomTom, which is the biggest problem with the Tele Atlas maps in the USA; they are very incomplete. My road has existed for 6 years; the Garmin Navteq maps has had it for years, but TomTom/TeleAtlas still does not know about it. My friend and I call it DumbDumb 'cause the stupid thing had to be told not to use all the private agriculture roads here on Maui in routing.

  • sureley that tomtom is a much higher spec&price.

  • That's the point - do you buy a more expensive GPS with loads of extras, or a budget one which still does great navigation?

  • @scalespeeder - Depends how much information you want. As a coach driver I want lots.

  • Ew, Garmin...I've had nothing but trouble with those things. TomTom tends to be a bit more user friendly, plus they're always up to date with Mapshare. Something Garmin nor Magellin features.

  • I was thinking for the long time which GPS to buy. Thanks for the demo. Now I can easily decide which GPS to buy. Tomtom shows more information than garmin, which is critical during navigation. Tomtom voice is loud, clear and more natural than garmin. I always have the best maps with tomtom due to mapshare feature. I can easily adjust the volume touching the bottom of the main screen in TT but in garmin I can do this in more steps, which may lead to accidents.

  • I like the nuvi

  • I've got to be missing something. I bought the Nuvi 200W a few days ago, and can rarely get a satellite connection. Rarely I'll get even 3 bars, usually it's no bars or one bar. What am I missing?

  • Try resetting it with the button on the bottom, underneath the sticker, or phone Garmin Support and they'll walk you through how to do the screen reset.

  • Thank you, but I figured it out. I replied in your other movie :D.

  • I put this in another video, but will put it in again. I've been having some trouble with the Nuvi 200W I picked up a few days ago. Almost always I'll either get no signal, or one puny bar (which isn't enough to acquire the satellites). Only once have I gotten 4 bars. Am I missing something?

  • Great demonstration mate!

I'm convinced of the Garmin 200!

But I'm getting the 200w just because I'm picky and want a sweet widescreen. ;)

  • thanks for the info .. now i know what to get for Christmas

  • The Nuvi 200 is a great Sat Nav without all the expensive extras that come with the 520. The Garmin is reliable and very easy to use. I have never had a 200 crash or freeze. Professional drivers that I talk to all prefer the Garmin maps. Convinced?

  • I just bought the nuvi 200 went for my first trip with it from Montreal to West Newton PA and didn't get lost once , didn't even have to look at a paper map.Very user freindly.I did not loose the signal once (round trip 22 hours). I've been told the tom tom freezes sometimes. And you can't go wrong with a name like Garmin. I paid 299Cdn at best buy.If you want a wider screen ,go for the nuvi 200W .

  • I am sure nuvi 200 doesnt come with canada map then how did you use nuvi 200 to travel from montreal? Tomtom one is cheaper than nuvi 200 has canada us maps and map quality is better than nuvi 200.

  • Because even though mine is the Canada version, it still has the bordering states. Same for you with the lower cities here in Canada.

  • so do you like the tomtom or nuvi better? advice?

  • The TomTom has Bluetooth for hands-free mobile calls, FM-Modulator to send audio through your car speakers, will read out road-names, can download traffic information, you can talk to it (voice recognition), and has better route planning than the Garmin, but it does cost twice as much as the Garmin, which is a superb A to B basic navigator.

Which have I got? The Garmin Nuvi 200.
