  • gotta feel for any washington fan after this game. especially when its the commentator

  • its a good thing tyrone is gone

  • I don't see any difference that the call made. It's not like the kicker missed the extra point wide and it would have been good if he was at 20 yards. The kick was blocked. That's not on the officials. That's on the Washington special teams unit.

Honestly, the Huskies should have sent the officials a thank-you note, because their mistake covered up the fact that the Huskies failed to stop the Cougars from blocking the kick.

  • @NightHawk12to81 He got it blocked because he had to kick it lower since it was a 35-yarder. Without the penalty yards he could have kicked it high over the line like you always do on an extra point.

  • BYU grad here. Usually it seems to me that the refs are against BYU when they make bad calls (see BYU-Utah game last year, Florida State @ BYU in 2008...), but yup...this was a bogus call. Washington should've kept that TD; it was theirs.

  • Refs the ruin the game?

  • but hey, if they didnt make that call, we would have probably still lost the game in overtime..or, we would have won, and won maybe 2-3 other games, and we would still have willingham, instead of sark.

  • that was messed up!

  • Terrible call, and bad coaching for not making a 30-year field goal.

Thank God Willingham is gone. Worst thing EVER for the UW and the PAC10.

I just saw he has decided to retire... yeah, right. No one would consider hiring him - even a high school... well, maybe WSU. That would actually be an upgrade over Frankenstein Wulff.

  • Football in twenty years when the politically correct refs take over: you scored a touchdown, unsportsmanlike conduct.

  • This compares to the KS call tonight... stoopid

  • It's kind of a dumb penalty, but whenever you do something like that with the ball after a touchdown (ie spike the ball or throw it in the air like that) they're going to call unsportsmanlike conduct. And Locker should have known that.

  • screw them refs,,, i hate byu

  • I can't really see how a flag, just or unjust, has anything to do with Washingtons line not blocking the D on the PAT. That was just HORRIBLE blocking from the FG unit. How many were through? 3-4 players? Horrible call? If it's in the rules it's in the rules. Horrible blocking? Oh dear sweet merciful Jesus yes.

  • @spinelessthief the thing is there was no real just cause to add the penalty which pushed the FG unit back thus altering the angle at which the kick had to be made to compensate for the additional distance. Yes, this final outcome was manipulated by the refs

  • im a BYU fan and think that this call was HORRIBLE!! It should be deleted!

Anyways GO COUGARS:))) We won last saturday Spetember 4, 2010:)))

  • NO HEISMAN FOR YOU!

  • Poor game announcing. Clear call. You can't do that. They had a chance to put it into overtime if they would have made the kick. They didn't. I hate those announcers. Homers.

  • Watch how the ball leaves the frame. Its all of the sudden ok, because its at the end of the game? The first thing i thought was 'well I guess he doesn't care about getting flagged' before the refs threw anything. This is a flag 10 out of 10 times.

PS can there be more homer announcers?

  • You can blame the refs, I blame UW for not holding their blocks on what should've been an automatic extra point.

  • good call...whitey took it too far...disgrace of the game...fuckin showboatin honkies

  • BYU fan here. It would have been nice to just let the players settle it on the field. These kinds of calls taint wins. No fun to watch as a fan.

  • well it was stupid to launch the ball into the air. but then BYU's bench cleared after the block and no flag was thrown there. lack of consistency.

  • @teabagtebow1

Actually, excessive celebration WAS called on BYU. They were penalized for it.

  • calls like this make me want to punch myself in the balls.

  • As an official...that should not have been thrown...what I can tell no one came off the bench, it was the 11 on the field....completely horrible call...way to ruin the game guys....

  • @alasjajo

According the the rulebook, one of the things SPECIFICALLY mentioned that constitutes excessive celebration is "throwing the ball high into the air". He clearly did that, and it was a clear violation of the rules. Is it a stupid rule? Yes.

But BYU wasn't getting calls all game. They were getting blatantly held on every snap right in front of the officials, and it wasn't every called. Dozens of missed calls went AGAINST BYU.

  • ... Really if thats how footballs going to be from now on i dont even think i want to have anything too do with it

  • Unbelievable! What's next, penalizing the offense when the cheerleaders jump up and down??

  • ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • another terrible call. just a typical judgement call typical of the times that is taken the fun out of everything. sorta like the nfl with flags on big hits the best part of the game and celebration too. its terrible it is football. let em play!!!

  • Sports are played with emotion. WHAMOWADE is a complete fool. He must of been the water boy and only got excited over filling up the cups. If they broke out into a team practiced dance celebration i would understand the call but for THAT? all he did was release the ball? who is that upsetting? the other team? how could that be more upsetting than getting scored on? i would have fired that guy.

  • Excessive taunting is one thing.. but seriously.. The man just won the game for his team.. I know i would be excited and im sure everyone who commited below even the ones who say its a good call would of have been excited aswell! and to penalize some one over it is BS.. NCAA has gone to far with some of these rules.. its a fucking game, have fun with it!

  • wow. no wonder people accuse refs of being crooked. when they make a call like that, that has no basis and wouldnt even be called in a high school game, at that critical time in the game shows that they have no respect for the game or for their roles as a part of the game. they are not there to decide the outcome but they chose to.

  • that was such a bullsh*t call. that ref needs to get fired!

  • The game was fixed. The zebra got paid to fix the game.

  • Maybe they're trying to make soccer more popular for Americans. Don't know why else they would make such a lame ruling. Worse is that the calls are subjective. If ref see player scratching his butt, "Hey! He's being offensive! Thats unsportsmanlike!"

Maybe not but still feel dumb calls are going to screw the game.

  • wow wtf was that.....

  • HORRIBLE CALL! that's freaking ridiculous! wow..... stupid stupid stupid. they should get rid of that stupid penalty unless it's REALLY taunting and OVER celebration.. that's so dumb.

  • @summ3rqtpiex333 Imagine how it is gonna be for the 2011 season when all those stupid taunting and clebration rules come in. I love Football but once those rules come in I am not really gonna be that much of a fan. It was a dumb call and shouldn't have been called... he was excited, his whole team was! gosh!!

  • @jojoworld12345 Totally agree, it was stupid and uncalled for. They're taking out the fun and the tradition in a lot of things nowadays. :/

  • it was a great call. exactly by the book. That QB needs to learn the rule book...he blew it for his team.

  • @whamowade It may be in the rules, but it's a fucking idiotic rule at that. There is no reason it should be in there.

  • dumb

  • ha I remember this game. The flag was a horrible call. But at the same time it did not ruin the game. BYU blocked the kick. it doesn't matter where you are on the field, if you block a kick, its going backwards. Had Washington missed the field goal, I would side with you and say "Yeah, glad for the win but you got screwed" but thats clearly not the case.

  • @Rockedmysocksoff

I dont think you realize the difference between an extra point and a 35 yard field goal

  • @Huskyfan63

And I don't think you realize that it doesn't matter when the kick is blocked. Its not the distance, in this case, its the linemen who failed to hold the defense

  • @Rockedmysocksoff

I dont think you realize that you line up differently for a 35 yard field goal than you would for a regular extra point

  • @Huskyfan63 even II can hit a 35 yard field goal! You're an idiot. You think a loss in overtime or a 1-11 season would have looked any better?... ugh.

  • thats fucking shit

  • he is a kicker in division 1 college football kicking straight at the fukin field goal post... he should b able to make that kick... NO EXCUSES.... the whole field goal unit just let that bad call go to their heads...stop whining

  • It's really not a question of what would've happened. But clearly 35 yards is more difficult than the regular distance. The problem is the rule. He shouldn't be penalized for that. He wasn't being cocky or showing any poor sportsmanship. He was just excited, and rightly so.

I hate how this gets penalized, but players who do that stupid straight leg run or act so pleased with themselves don't.

I actually think it should be a judgment call. Everyone knows when someone's being a poor sport.

  • I was at this game: Lucky ass Mormons with their voodoo magic LOL GO DAWGS!

  • he chucked tht ball i agree with the call.

  • not much difference between winless and 1 win. not like the loss kept washington from making a bowl game or anything.

  • haha loser. SINGLEGUY. no wonder. u support a sucky team. whos gonna win the apple cup this year? HUSKIES> COUGS CANT EVEN WIN A GAME, HUSKIES NOW CAN!!

  • Can't win a game? We beat #3 Oklahoma, knocked out the reigning heisman trophy winner, and we are 5-1. Whats your record?? Have you beat a good top 10 team? USC doesn't count because they are the 2nd most overrated program in the nation (behind Boise State) and did you knock out the best player in college football? We would smoke you guys, and thats why you backed out of playing us in 2011 and 2012. Face it. We are a whole lot better than you Pac-10 suckers.

  • i hate sc.. but they are definately not overrated idiot

  • Thats a joke right? Do you even pay attention to football?

  • When you barely beat the worst team in the pac-10, that means you can barely beat their WORST team. I guess at BYU every team that is better is overrated, which is most of Pac-10, Big-10, Big-12, and all of the SEC. Your right USC and Boise State are overrated cause they could easily beat your morman ass.

  • lol how about them cougs!!!!!!

  • In nature ....stupid,fat zebras that purposefully seek attention get killed and eaten...I'm not advocating killing refs....just eating them! one need only take a quick gander at these porky pigskin pushers to see that they could themselves help reduce world hunger...

  • good call. i agree with it. he chucked the ball 10 feet in the air

  • Anyone who actually calls themself "soccerboy" had better be a budding superhero or go make sports comments on soccer videos...You obviously know nothing of this game or the emotion of it...Jake Locker and his teamates are victims (like Oklahoma @Oregon etc) of overly flouridated (and overweight!) Pac 10 refs! They should have independent review of officials and oversight because of the huge $s that are now involved with NCAA Football (read corruption)

  • ...and thats why you're name is 28'soccer'boy...

  • Jake Locker is such a stud I love him I have played with his cousin.

  • Doesn't matter. They MISSED this extra point. I don't care how far they put it back. They should be making that still at the college level. If they got it blocked, who is to say they wouldn't have blocked the 18 yard extra point. So the call doesn't effect the play too much. I agree it's a bad judgment call on the penalty, but the rule book states you can't throw the ball over your head after a touchdown. Just stating facts people.

  • hahahaha are you retarded? "They MISSED this extra point"... that doesnt happen on a regular PAT dumbass... it just doesnt... to quck, kicker is not worried about generating mor velocity, it's just a chip shot... NO that wouldnt have happened.... game woudl have been played in 0T, but we'll never no

  • One, they didn't miss, it was blocked, the ball never had the chance to miss.

Two, the extra-point became the distance of a 35-yard field goal thus you have to kick the ball at a lower trajectory vs. kicking it high in the air semi-straight from the regular extra point distance.

And three, BYU hadn't blocked UW's three previous extra-point attempts so you can't say that they would've done it that time.

  • I used to be a kicker in high school. And a 35 yarder would require a lower trajectory for say me. But for a Division 1-A kicker, that is a chip shot still. I doubt he would even need a follow through at that range, unless the kicker was just that bad in the first place. Then you'd just have to blame your kicker anyways, so it's your kicker and O-line's fault. BYU wanted to block that kick, so they did.

  • If it's a chip shot then why do kicker's still miss from that range even in games that aren't on the line? No kick no matter what level of sport you're playing at is a "gimme".

And yes, our kicker's really haven't been any good since 2003-ish when John Anderson graduated the UW.

  • But they did didn't they?? and you guys lost!

  • horrible call.

  • @acnhs09

Maybe. But it wasn't as horrible as the dozens of missed holding calls on every offensive play for Washington, when the Huskies offensive linemen were basically tackling the Cougar defenders...

Or phantom false start calls against BYU when an audible was called and the center was turning his head to pass along the call...

The PAC-10 officials did everything they possibly could to hand this game to Washington.

  • "And that is purely in the hands of the officials." Yeah, did you guys see the ref sneak in and run through the pansie UW line and block the kick?

Right call - dumb rule. Washington still choked no matter how you look at it. Maybe now with an ex-BYU stud as your coach you can starting playing to your potential.

  • fuck you.

  • i know it was a bad call

but still, the kick got blocked so washington would of lost anyway

  • fuck you

the point i made was true

so you can beat off with your other steelers fans and watch them get their ass kicked tommorow against a geezer of a qb

    even thought i hate arizona.

  • it always happens to the northwest teams

seahawks got fucked for a superbowl (one i though surly would win) but the ref jumped in from of our WR for the win,

    pittsburge cheated,

and we did get some spotlight for once

and it was because we sucked ass this season.

    so gay

  • even if "our shitty kicker" couldnt make the pat, its still a bullshit call no question

  • I Saw Another Husky Do The Exact same thing and it was not flaged.

Also on Sunday The Fox Football Pre Game show they even said the exact samething it should not have been flaged.

Even if the Celebration was not flaged The Kicker would not have made the PAT, because Are Kicker's Suck, you all saw what happened in the apple cup. Do You Still think he would have made the pat?

    Tell me what you think.

I Am Still A Husky Fan Even After This Season.

  • After a score or any other play, the player in possession immediately

must return the ball to an official or leave it near the dead-ball spot.

    This prohibits:

    (a) Kicking, throwing, spinning or carrying (including off of the

field) the ball any distance that requires an official to retrieve it.

    (c) Throwing the ball high into the air.

    (d) Any other unsportsmanlike act or actions that delay the game.

It's only illegal if it delays the game.

  • You can't throw the ball up in the air...

  • HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Even if the kicker got it off he would have missed, look at the crapple cup... GO WAZZU.

  • if that is not excessive celebration, what is?

  • Bad call. They still should have made the XP but bad call.

  • Refs suck end of story! The people who call us whiners are the whiners because they're the ones whining about! Maybe they've never routed for a team that at one time was actually GOOD!!! BYU sucks and always will!

  • Good Call Bad Rule

  • Personally, i think the official made a great call, look how high Locker throws the ball into the air, it is stated clearly in the rule book that you must hand the offical the ball or place it near the dead ball spot. Besides, the extra point was BLOCKED, it wouldn't have mattered.

  • i can honestly say there is no fan like a byu fan.

  • THIS WAS THE MOST SPINELESS CALL EVER!! the officials owe washington an apology, not to mention the game. and as for you byu fans, how can you proud of a game that you basically lost? you should at least have a enough integrity to admit that the ref gift wrapped this game for you!

  • byu still had to block the PAT. that means they probably would've still blocked the kick if the penalty wasn't called. the call didn't ruin the game at all.

  • Agreed, BYU blocked the kick so the GOOD CALL didn't even matter... and it was an obvious celebration, you either have to give the ball back to the ref or leave it where it was down. You CAN NOT throw the ball into the air!! stop being stupid people!

  • have you ever heard of momentum dumb shit

  • And it should not have mattered. It was a KICK!

  • You cant throw it commentators no matter how bad you want to call it, or not!

  • NCAA 2008 Rules

    Page FR-122

    2. After a score or any other play, the player in possession immediately

must return the ball to an official or leave it near the dead-ball spot.

    This prohibits:

    (a) Kicking, throwing, spinning or carrying (including off of the

field) the ball any distance that requires an official to retrieve it.

    (b) Spiking the ball to the ground.

    (c) Throwing the ball high into the air.

    (d) Any other unsportsmanlike act or actions that delay the game.

  • Perfect response LT. Needed to be called...was called. Great job Ref!

  • "TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Malo Taumua blocked a field goal to lift UNLV to a 23-20 overtime upset of No. 15 Arizona State...Taumua's block on a 35-yard field goal attempt...came after Kyle Watson kicked a 20-yard field goal on the Rebels' overtime possession.

The loss took the luster off Arizona State's game against No. 2 Georgia next week."

"New Mexico stunned the Arizona Wildcats Saturday in University Stadium 36-28...Wildcats' offense to 27 points below their season average."

  • Also, let's not forget that BYU blocked that kick so completely that there was no way it would have been good even without the call. Stop whining. The game was won by BYU, fair and square. Did you see the UCLA game-59-0? Quite the statement. BYU scored 35 points in a single quarter.

MWC>PAC-10. Where's the guaranteed BCS berth for the MWC?--"Mountain West Conference football teams combined to post a 7-1 mark in non-conference action on Saturday, including a 4-0 record against Pac-10 teams."

  • WAAAAAAAAAH!!! I haven't seen so much whining over an obviously correct call in my life. Talk about sore losers. The rule is the rule; the refs saw Locker throw the ball high into the air & called it.

BYU then destroyed fabled PAC-10 powerhouse UCLA: 59-0. The worst loss UCLA has suffered in nearly EIGHTY YEARS! Let's face it; the whiners are at it b/c they don't like the MWC's dominance over the PAC-10 lately. BYU played a good game & deserved to win, so stop whining like little children!

  • "powerhouse UCLA"?

when was the last time UCLA was considered a football "powerhouse"? they finish in the bottom half of the conference every year.

thats like saying Duke is an "ACC powerhouse"

  • sounds like the wrong sport. lol

  • come on. the ref had to make that call, it was a GOOD call but it sucked for WA. but lets face it byu's kick blocking is unbelievable. and everyones making it out be like if wa had made the field goal they would have won the game! we all know they would have choked in OT. plus WA proved how much they really suck yesterday and BYU proved how awesome they are against ucla. so SUCK IT!!!

  • That was a horrible call. Ya I am biased because I live in Washington but to make that call was purely elementary. Or in other words, garbage.

  • The rule specifically states that you need to hand the ball to the official or set it on the ground. Also, BYU would have blocked that kick as easily from 10 yards ahead, it's all willpower... The pac-10 are the worst sports ever...

  • careful what you say. USC is part of the Pac-10 incase you forgot. They've graduated some of the NFL's top echelon.

  • Why do I need to be careful about what I say about the Pac-10? I don't care about their players, it's their coaches and administrators that pull this crap... Oh and their sportcasters and officials... Guess what else the Pac-10 is famous for. Having rival coaches promise never to play them again because they refuse to let the visiting team bring their confrence officials...

  • I go to BYU, but I still think it's a sketchy call... I know that's the rule, but on the last play of the game? If you watch football you know there's a penalty like every play (at the very least, a holding call); do you really have to make that call at such a crucial point?

  • I totally agree. With the amount of past failure the Huskies have had, and then to go and go neck-to-neck with a team that is rating 15th in the nation...they really did have something to celebrate about. While I am almost sure they would've gone for 2, the Huskies deserved even one more play regardless of what it was.

  • its a stupid rule but you gotta call it byu did block the kick thats washingtons fault and wow do u honestly think that washington would have gone for 2? exspecially with tyrone Willingham's job on the line this season there is no way he would take that risk

  • Dude, did you see our secondary? Willingham could have run a slant and scored that himself.

  • We would've, I saw him make the call right after the touchdown. He was going to strike while the iron was hot, and Locker or Kravitz would've taken it in and probably score.

  • r u fuckin kidding me wrecktangle. do u have any fucking emotion u cocksucker. how the fuck would throwing the ball up in the air be unsportmenlike to the other team u little bitch. and if we didnt get the penalty we wouldve had a chance going to two.

  • Nice language pal. Were you raised in the ghetto or do you just have an IQ of a rock? It was a good call and Washington is a horible team. So spend a little more time in the classroom and a little less time smoking the whacky tobacki and watching Washington getting raped by better teams.

  • BYU just blocked UCLA's 30 yard attempt. Must have been the players that won the game not the refs. Washington needs to learn how to block better.

  • Well if you don't watch you obviously don't know the rules. He broke the rules. Period. I GUARANTEE if BYU did that they would have gotten the same penalty, so there is no reason to disagree with the call.

  • You can hand the ball to the ref OR put it on the ground. OR you could get a celebration penalty by throwing it in the air, blatantly disregarding the rules.

  • NCAA Rule 9, Section 2:

After a score or any other play, the player in possession immediately must return the ball to an official or leave it near the dead-ball spot.

    This prohibits:

    (a) Kicking, throwing, spinning or carrying (including off of the field) the ball any distance that requires an official to retrieve it.

    (b) Spiking the ball to the ground [Exception: A forward pass to conserve time (Rule 7-3-2-d)].

    (c) Throwing the ball high into the air.

  • Wow, this was the most unexpected comment... Sorry everybody ignored you man.

  • listen, I love how people say he just threw the ball over his shoulder, or spiked the ball behind him. ARE YOU BLIND????!!! HE THREW THE BALL 40 FT IN THE AIR!!!!!! IT TAKES 10 SEC. FOR THE BALL TO HIT THE GROUND. Its a penalty, If you were truely better than the other team it shouldnt have been that close anyway. If the extra point would have gone in we wouldnt be having this discussion, meaning that the call was only wrong because washington lost the game.

  • what if washington wanted to go for two, then it did cost them the game. it was a bullshit call, he didnt taunt anyone, he threw the ball but went straight to his team to celebrate

  • Your right it wouldn't be a discussion if they had made the extra point. But they didn't, and they lost. But would NOT have if they hadn't had the penalty called. Thats why its still being discussed. Its hard to scare a touchdown on the field, I would celebrate too. That ref obviously has something up his ass.

I would also like to state that I don't even watch football and have no idea what the names of the two teams are, I just thinks that plain wrong.

  • no shit, it wouldnt even been an issue if they didnt fuck up the 35yrd chip shot, Get over it washington

  • True...A 35 yard FG is a chip shot. This game was NOT in the hands of the officials. BYU earned the win by blocking the kick.

  • All this bullshit could have been avoided if the guy made a 35 yard chip shot

  • It is not a chipshot, at all. In the pros, yes, but not in the NCAA.

  • OMG get a life guys these announcers are idiots, they made the right call, it was a short kick and they should have made it but if your not talented to make a 35 yard field goal your not a kicker

STFU GET A LIFE ITS ONLY COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOT A CURE FOR CANCER

  • 35 yards is not an easy field goal.

  • The extra point try (still a very short one)was blocked by 3 people, you can hardly say the refs caused the loss.

  • LOL! Even the WU players admitted it was the right call according to the books. The kicker said that being moved back doesn't effect the trajectory of that kick from 35 yards. He said that a lot of people say it does, but they don't know what they are talking about. The better team won that day and the refs weren't out of line. If anyone was out of line it was the NCAA and their dumb rules. The refs job is to enforce those dumb rules.

  • Lol, being from OU and having the worst back to back calls in the history of NCAA football during the Oregon Quacks game, I can say that this is pretty bad...OH well, hopefully the pac-10 refs don't pull another like this for our game this coming weekend!

  • No joke dude, I don't think I've seen a worse call in history than that one on the onside kick. The dick ref couldn't even get the instant replay right! Plus that might have cost OU a nat'l champ chance. Huskies certainly can't claim that...lol

  • get a life dude it was a right call according to the books

  • As a BYU fan I wished it had gone to OT.. but everyone is ignoring the fact that BYU BLOCKED THE KICK!!!

  • As a Husky fan I can say it is not the refs fault the Huskies lost. They could have played better earlier to not let this happen, however let me throw out these three points.

    1. HORRIBLE CALL!

    2. Listen to the announcers assesment. Driving around listening to the game on a national radio broadcast in the midwest different announcers had the same take as these announcers.

    3. The only people to say it isn't a bad call is insecure BYU whiners.

I want to see this called the same way all year!

  • Yeah -- I hate it when the refs follow the rule book -- it really disadvantages the team that breaks the rules

  • what the hell r u saying its like

    if I said

"I hate when they call the facemask"

and the next day they dont call it and everyone starts doing it your an idiot

  • Thank god for the ncaa to make football void of any celebration.

  • As much as I dislike the huskies "being an oregon duck" i still think that call was total bullshit.

  • Maybe the unposrtsmanlike penalty call was just karma :-)

  • As I mentioned earlier...it's no fair to downplay what Jake Locker did. He threw the ball at least 30 feet straight into the air. The only unfair thing in this whole matter is that the refs hands are tied...when a player throws the ball sky high he is forced to call the penalty. Not a bad call...a bad rule. P.S.: Anyone catch the worst holding no-call in history that happened a few plays prior to Locker's TD run? I think BYU would have sealed the game there if the refs hadn't botched that...

  • The kick was blocked by BYU, not the ref. The cougars made a good play by blocking the kick. Washington had a chance to tie the game and they couldn't hold blocks. How is that the refs fault? Has the kicker never made a field goal from 35 yards before? Do the special teams not know how to block. I understand the rule sucks but its still a rule and washington still had a chance to tie the game and they couldn't execute. I would have done the same thing if I was that ref.

  • Anyone in any game can bring up well they should hav made plays at this point in the game, and this wouldnt hav happened. The point is the refs shouldnt decide the game at a crucial time like a tying extra pt. Also, most of the time the home team has the advantage in penalty diffential, so that doesnt matter, wat mattters is when the game is on the line. Let the players play! You wouldnt be human if you didnt celebrate with your teammates on a tying or winning score. NCAA now no fun league.

  • So the officials should selectively disregard calling penalties at crucial times of the game, instead of calling it as neutral as they possibly can? Shouldn't your frustration be directed towards the ones who put that rule in the rulebook, rather than those charged with enforcing it?

  • so next time I play with less than 2 minutes left I am going to facemask the shit out of the QB and hope the refs diregard it

    your an idiot

  • Any coach who would go into the locker room and whine that they should have won because of one call shouldn't be coaching. I doubt Winningham did that. How many unexcuted plays were there (ie. simple blocking on the PAT and hit the chip shot). Penalties 4-25yds W vs. 7-80yds BYU. If BYU would have lost and came out complaining about the penalty differential what would have been said. Whiners! BYU was the better team all day. It's simple play better and don't let anything else decide the outcome.

  • This is a case of bad timing. That's not a call I like to see at the end of a game. Poor Locker, he played an amazing game, but couldn't keep his head on straight at the end. For the record...he did throw that ball like 30 feet in the air, at least (I had a buddy in the stands right near that endzone). I also feel bad for Jan Jorgensen, the kid jumped 8 feet in the air to block that kick, but he's not getting credit... I'm not sure he wouldn't have gotten it even if it was a normal PAT.

  • I completely agree with you sajgracer1 I'm also telling everyone give Jan credit for he is the one who changed the outcome of the game! Also no one can get mad at the refs get mad at the ppl who wrote the rule.

  • LET PLAYERS CELEBRATE, ITS IN THE GAME. I WOULD NEVER PLAY A GAME WHERE YOU CAN NOT CELEBRATE. SPIRIT OF COMPETITION.

STUPID REFS HAVE TO RUIN EVERYTHING.

    Ugh...

  • just50bk...so good sportsmanlike celebrating is not good for football?

  • Look it was a lame call by the ref, but the blame lays on the QB too. Shouldn't have called it, but maybe we'll finally get rid of that stupid rule now.

  • This ain't the NFL where celebrating is a grey area. College has always been lay it down or hand it to the official. NEVER fling NOR spike. Blame the ignorant QB who forgot both High School and College rules... this guy has never been in the NFL, yet that is the only place a celebration like that might not be a penalty. Every level this guy has played defines that as a penalty & we are only talking about this because there was only two seconds left.

  • ya thats some bullshit. the ref ruined the game, byu did not deserve the win. Who cares though, Utah will beat them when they showdown.

  • what a fat fucking retarted ref!!!!

  • terrible call.......anyone who thinks different doesn't understand sports! penalties could be called on almost every play, and to call such a crucial penalty under the circumstances is frickin retarded. ref must have had a dime on the game.....what a joke!

  • what a CLASSIC thing for fsn to say. "purely in the hands of the officials". lol, not exactly. washington definately got ripped off though, horrible call. a longer point after attempt lowers the angle of the kick, therefore increasing the opposing teams ability to block the kick. too bad a pac-10 couldn't remind the mormons that they're too shitty to play in a bcs bowl. they will become the next hawaii if they run the table and get a bid. ucla will take care of business

  • The Pac-10 has decided that the officials got the controversial call near the end of Saturday's BYU-Washington game right.

"The rule seems pretty cut and dried," Coordinator of football officiating for the Pac-10 Conference Dave Cutaia said, according to the Seattle Times, of Rule 9, Section 2, Article 2c, which states that a player can be penalized for an unsportsmanlike act for "throwing the ball high into the air."

  • The refs did not decide the outcome of this game. Yes it may be a bogus call in everyone's eyes but it is still a rule, so why scold a ref for doing his job. But that call is not the deciding factor of the game.

Yes it may have taken an opportunity for a 2 point conversion away. But still they attempted a 35 yard field goal to tie the game up. So the fact that BYU blocked the field goal is the deciding factor of the game not the refs.

  • I don't know how many times I have to say this...

Though it was a bogus call, this ref did NOT DECIDE THE GAME. Who's to say we wouldn't have blocked the other point? Who's to say BYU wouldn't have stopped them in OT? Willingham was not going to risk going for two, on our radio, our announcer said that he would be going for only one point, because he only had one finger up. But that is not the point. This did not determine the game. Any reporter who thinks it did should not be reporting.

  • Come on now. That was a pathetic call at that juncture of the game. If you watch the replay of the game, you'll see Willingham planned on going for 2 anyway but that went away with the flag. The kid scored a TD with 3 seconds left, flipped the ball up and high fived his team. The refs elected to flag it, and change the outcome of the game. I hate the Huskies and actually kind of like BYU, but the refs were the deciding factor in that game. Let the players decide the game, not bad calls.

  • absolutely correct!

  • It was a pathetic call and im upset with how the game ended, but it did NOT determine the game! Willingham was not going to go for 2, I believe he has said he wasnt going to go for two, and after the touchdown one of our reporters kept saying that he will go for one because he was showing his players his index finger, as in going for one point, not as in we are #1. The penalty was bad, but the ref didnt decide the game! Washington had a chance to tie the game and failed! And That is That!

  • Agree to disagree. As other have mentioned, they didn't flag a BYU guy when he spiked the ball, selective penalties that make it harder for one team to have a chance than the other is not right, and downright unfair to athletes, staff, and fans. at :22 I can't tell if he's holding up one finger or two, but I thought I heard he intended on going for two.
