  • Beauty, it looks like a child from mommy spitfire and daddy FW 190.

  • I was at HMAS Albatross in the late 1950s when the last Sea Furies were withdrawn from service. To mark the occasion two senior pilots in Sea Furies 'beat-up' the airfield for about 10 minutes. I can tell you it was a very impressive display of action-packed flying. The RAN used them during the Korean War flying from the carrier HMAS Sydney; using rockets and 20mm cannons they could pack quite a punch.

  • Peter Carmichael in a Sea Fury shot down a Mig jet in Korea!

  • My grandad made the engines for these in the second world war if i recall correctly. Funny thing is taht until recently he thought that the engines he was making turned out to be no good!

  • The aeroplane is fabuous.

    The sound is magnificent!.

  • I was a kid in the 1950's in Nowra, close to HMAS Albatross, the home of the Fleet Air Arm. Sea Furies were a common sight, along with Fairey Fireflies and Gannets and de Havilland Sea Venoms. My parents were friends with some of the pilots - my regret now is that I never asked them about the planes and their flying experiences, although I would have been pretty precocious to have done so!

  • awesome

  • I'm confused. Sometimes I see fighter airplanes with three propellers blades , or four propellers blades or even five propeller blades like on a Sea Fury. Why can't the designers make up their minds?

  • @ZeekWolfe1 The Sea fury Hercules engine was so powerful it required a 5 bladed prop to absorb the horsepower.

  • An absolute beauty.

  • i think im lucky to see 1 of the ONLY 2 hawker sea furry in canada.. what a NOISY aircraft and shes actually HUUUGE compared to wat we see on videos!! ad the amount of oil and fuel this single turbo prop aircraft uses is insane!!!

  • @petrucci973 Turbo prop?? I don't think so. Dem's proper pistons in cylinders, laddie...

  • Get that fuckin yank oil company advert of the engine cowling! Its a British plane!!

  • @Saxonsoldiers Hey, money talks.

  • My old boss did some 'air displays' in one of these in Korea in the 1950's, but I don't think they enjoyed it much because they kept shooting at him.

  • What a beast! The sound of one overhead is glorious.

  • That looks suspiciously like a Tasmanian Skyrace in the late 90's? I am in love with the Sea Fury.

  • This aircraft is one of 27 ex-Iraqi aircraft sent to the USA in 1972 with only 120 hours flight time on it. Never flown in the US the plane arrived in New Zealand in 1986 and was completely overhauled registered as ZK-SFR. Later the wingfold systems were fitted with parts from a plane which was written off in the US. Being unwell I have lost track of it but it seems to be privately registered in Australia? On full boost bit sounds better than a Spitfire or P-51. YES IT DOES!

  • What a classic of that era!

  • What a glorious macho beast the Sea Fury was/is. A perfect aircraft with a perfect name. One of the true piston-engined greats.

  • looks like FW190,someone stole designs

  • @azas1 dosent look like a fw they dont look eaven Close to eachother

  • @Mattebubben I see a lot of similarities too. The inward raising landing gear, the canopy frame and bubble canopy (like the late 190A8 & 190A9), the exhaust system on the side, the fact both have radials... Together with the Nakajima Ki-84 they look a lot more alike than most other types of the war.

  • On the other hand if you actually knew something about the subject, you would realise that it was the ultimate development of the line of Hawker piston engined aircraft designed under the direction of Sir Sydney Camm and owes far more to the Tempest/Tempest II than any passing resemblance you might think it has to the much smaller, Focke Wulf Fw190 designed by Kurt Tank.

  • @azas1 Yeah right! Try a closer look, would you?

This plane is derived from the Hawker Tempest, which in turn is derived from the Hawker Typhoon. It is much bigger and heavier than a FW190, and with far more powerful engine. The lines in the fuselage are hailing back to the Typhoon, and the principle is the same: Big, powerful, heavily armed and fast. The ultimate in Boom and Zoom.

The FW 190 is an entirely different beast, designed as an interceptor, although used in a multitude of roles.

  • Original engine?

  • @maguaNZ

Sounds like a Bristol Centaurus to me

    R-3350 sounds totally different

  • @mattsta1964 As I understand yes a supercharged Bristol Centaurus engine.

  • ... a umíte si představit ten řev??? / ...and can you imagine the scream???

  • I assume this vid was done somewhere in New Zealand, Omaka, Wanaka or Auckland maybe, judging by the AT6's we see when the fury lands, the AT6's had the Kiwi insignia and NZ all over the fuselage !!

  • fuck yeah !

  • My old boss flew one of these in Korea.

  • My favorite plane of all time.

And the fs9 model is the best I have ever seen.

  • I love this beautiful baby. Looks so smooth and yet so brutal

  • Best possible way for the piston engined aircraft era to end. Top video of a top plane. :)

  • Best possible way for the piston aircraft era to end.

Top video of a top plane :)

  • Charming aircraft :D

They don't build them nowadays as they used to :(

  • Awesome bird!! That explains why many Third World countries have purchased it during the Cold War years - the plane is a multi-tasked machine.

  • I know it's not rational.... but that plane WANTS to fly, rather than end up in a museum!

  • That is most definitely my favorite aircraft! The fastest production piston aircraft ever built!

  • the sound is just outstanding, they had one at Yeovil 2009 but had no engine

  • I got to see 2 sea fury's racing each other at sky race Tasmania it was awesome 600kph at 100 ft agl

  • I've noticed that the fury is the only warbird that will get contrails off the wing tips.. I do like this plane tho my top 3 fav warbirds are the 1.P-51 (obviously) 2.corsair 3. Seafury

  • Speaks for itself really

  • I fucking LOVE this plane. Have seen this same one many times at Oshkosh as a kid

  • video is 5 stars

    Portugal Air Show Évora 2009

  • Amazing video thanks for posting.

Incredible to think we have a Bristol Centaurus engine trawled up at Brixham and the engine is all that's left of a sea fury. Please check out my channell.

  • possibly the finest piston engined fighter ever, the absolute height of piston engine fighter evolution, there was only one way up after the fury and that was jet fighters

  • when was the fury made, how fast did it go?

  • the fury and sea fury were designed during the war in the 40s although the fury saw some combat the sea fury was not ready until just after the jap surrender but it did see action in korea where it shot down Mig 15s in aeriel combat and they could do 485mph+ depending on what engine was fitted

  • truley a beast then.

  • Magnificent! You can keep your jets that Fury is the pinnicle of perfection of piston engined flying.

  • @Wanobi99 In what way does the use of an obscene word for human sexual intercourse help us understand your comments or appreciate this video?

  • @zeekwolfe perhaps if you could read you'd realise it wasn't my comment - if you have to dish out petty vitriol at least have the courtesy to direct it at the offending poster!

  • @Wanobi99 Sea Fury - Magnificent. Couldn't put it better you beauty.

  • Great video, thank you. My father flew Sea Furies in Korea from HMS Theseus.

  • 1:42 great sound

  • Definitely FW 190 but who cares? Both wonderful aeroplanes.

  • lol...good joke

  • ..................nothing needs to be said

  • How many Sea Furys are still flying with the Bristol Centarus engine? I know most have the R-3350 instead, because it is easier to maintain, and to find spare parts for.

  • cool

  • Sure, the tiny (in comparisin) 190 provided a blueprint for nimble, radial powered fighters...and due to it's success at war...i'm sure the Tempest II had many features based on the 190.

Then again, look what they ended up with. The SeaFury is massive in real life...with flying surfaces and an engine combo that would have obliterated the 190 in combat.

The Fury was able to down a Mig-15 in Korea. Doubt the 190 would have got close.

Once again..the SeaFury = ULTIMATE in piston fighters

  • The Sea Fury shot down more than one MIG 15 in Korea.

  • is it true that this aircraft was purchased by former RAAF pilot Gus Larard?

he was or still is a chief pilot for the Tony Raftis collection that was bound for oz but didn't materialise...ended up in Chino, California.

  • It looks as if Britain wanted it's own FW 190.

  • funny you should say that , the british used the 190 that landed in britain in 42 in development of the tempest which is a direct descendant of the fury

  • Justify your comment. The Fury was developed from the tempest which was developed from the Typhoon which was in production before the 190

  • yes thats right, but when hawker got hold of the captured 190 they incoperated some of the ideas from the 190 in the development of the tempest, why is that so hard to believe? All aircaft designers did it.

  • I accept in principle your comments re aircraft designers incorporating into their designs features from other aircraft. What I find difficult to accept that there ever was anything worthwhile that could be taken from the 190 (great fighter though it was ) and incorporated into the Fury which was the next generation of piston engined aircraft.

  • Examination of Faber's aircraft (which landed by mistake in england) was largely responsible for the preparation of Specification F.6/42, which called for a new, high-performance fighter. The Hawker Tempest, specifically, the radial-engined Tempest Mark II and its subsequent evolution, the Hawker Sea Fury, were a direct result of the examination of Faber's Fw 190A-3. Delve a bit deeper and you find this out.

  • I am well aware of all the points you make, including the circumstances of how the 190 arrived in the UK. What I remain unconvinced of, however, is the impact that ANY part of the -190 design had that produced tangible and significant features in the Fury and that are directly attributable to the -190. Even you, when choosing to make your point eloquently and persistently, fail to identify ANY concrete features of the 190 that were carried forward into the Fury.

  • look, read a few books on the fury and it will tell you, i'm not making this up!! You want proof? The mating of the radial centaurus to the airframe, the engine cooling system and exhausts. The principals behind cockpit design was copied ( the 190 was the first fighter aircaft to have an ergonomic cockpit). Last but not least the pressurised cockpit. Hawker it selves admit to this! Lets not forget the 190 during 41 - 42 this fighter was the benchmark most were being judged.

  • I certainly accept what you say about the ergonomic cockpit of the -190, but I don't agree that the -190 that landed in the UK had a pressurised cockpit ! Moreover, I do not believe that even much later variants of this aircraft had that feature.

  • yes i know that example did not have a pressurised cockpit, but again you are wrong the Ta-152H which entered service late 1944 had a pressurised cabin. I take it you don't disagree about the mating of the engine, cooling system and exhausts? I'm not trying to say you have to thank the 190 for the fury, but the 190 offered alot to british designers and different ideas which hawker freely admitted to have copied directly from the 190, and if it improved and already great design, why not?

  • I don't accept that the TA-152 compares technically with the -190. I am not sufficiently knowledgeable about the engine etc. aspects, but agree that it is possible. I have never disputed that the 190 did not influence the Fury AT ALL, I merely argue as to degree of influence.

    Cheers !

  • Rubbish!! the ta-152 is an direct relation to the fw 190D which is a direct realtion to the A series.

"What I find difficult to accept that there ever was anything worthwhile that could be taken from the 190" That was your own words mate!

  • correct - the Fw-190 never had a pressurised cockpit, also the the Hawker Sea Fury did indeed take some design cues from the Fw190, not least the close cowled annular radiator installation.

  • i have evidence that the high altitude version of the ta- 152 had a pressurised cockpit.

  • Thank you for posting...The Hawker Sea Fury is my all-time favorite piston/prop aircraft!!!

  • I do remember the collection being seized. I will try and find the article, but from my own (probably faulty) memory, the owner owed money (to the Tax Office?) and the aircraft were seized as in kind payment.

  • Thanks for that - i figured it was something along those lines. Do you know where the Fury ended up?

  • An interesting note....this aircraft was impounded by the Australian Federal Police along with the whole Flying Fighters Collection a year or two ago.

Does anyone know what really happened?

Were the aircraft obtained by fraudulent money?

And where is it going to go - hopefully to another Australian Collection it was our sole flying example after the Zuccolli's '308' went abroad.

    Can anyone shed some light?

  • Aerotec's or Zuccoli's Sea Fury VH-HFG was sold and transported to America in Colorado Springs. From memory the new owners pulled out the Bristol Centrious and installed a wright cyclone something arather

  • thanks will...i loved 308 as a kid. It was the one aircraft that spurned my desire to one day own a warbird.

  • no worries bro..

  • one thing more though...bummer about the centaurus replacement.

  • Amen.

  • I think I like the sound even more than the Rolls Royce Merlin, but it's very close.

  • each has it's merits...but the sleevless centaurus is the smoothest and most menacing of the two. It really is 'aural' power.

Not to discredit the song of a Merlin!

  • i have some questions, if any body knows the answer.

is the seafury a cousin of the formidable, typhoon and tempest ww2 fighters, or is it a plane on its own, either way, my god, what a gorgous peace of equipment

  • The Sea Fury was a development of the Tempest. Same plane as the Tempest but with the Bristol Centaurus radial engine rather than the Napier Sabre. The Centaurus model would have gone into mass production during the war but the engine supply was limited. So, the design went to the Royal Navy.

  • Enlarging on this a little more: the Mk II Tempest had the Centaurus engine, while the Mk 5 Tempest had the Napier Sabre motor. The Sea Fury was basically a Tempest II with reduced wing area and greatly improved visibility over the nose for deck landings. The RAF Fury version did not go into production. Sydney Camm, Hawker's designer, had proposed a Fury concept as the 'Tempest light fighter' well before the Tempest became operational.

  • You are correct, sir! For an additional 10 points!

  • is it a fault ?

I think we found our conservation due to the love of vintage planes...if others just qoute "pretty aircraft" or "thx for the video"

often used is "whish I would have been there"

thx for the chat again nprules111...your opinion and statements makes me believe that Europe has a future....again thx...and nice Video...the one with the Hawker SeaFury Mk 10 or 11....dont see the difference here :o)

  • I have yet to hear a Sea Fury at full tilt. Heard a Bearcat at max power scream by, THATS a helluva sound...

  • This and the P-51 mustang are probably the greatest aeroplanes in thew world!!!! and greatest sounding!!!!

  • If you stay with the allied birds...the SeaFury is unbeatable....and the Mustang ? of course...it has a Merlin engine..how could a Merlin engine sound bad for a British....I prefer the centaurus of the Seafury but thats a matter of taste....

  • Though the best sound is when the mustang dives and you get the power scream! its unbeatable!

  • okay...some like the turbo-sound and some the V8...some say the whistle sound from the Mustang results cause of the gun barrels and the wind catches in them producing that whistle...is it true or is a supercharger like the Me109 ? Maybe You know more of that

  • Im sure its a bit of all the supercharger make a small one which you hear on some spits tough with the mustang the air intakes help make it. but still the sea fury is soo beautiful!!!

  • thx for Your reply...

  • No problem i like discussing these matters! :)

  • So You are intersted in avaition :o)

Yeah me aswell...I like that matters as well..unfortunatly I saw the Mustang just once (Berlin IAA 2000) but it was a wonderful sound...I have to admit...last year I saw the B 25 (RedBull) together with a Trojan at my home airfield in Saarbrücken...wonderful as well...the air was vibrating as their pistons hammered through the air...I am glad to hear these sounds without the disturbing machinegun noise...

  • WOW!! must have been fantastic! once i saw 4 mustangs playing tailchase! absolutley immense!!!

i have yet to see a hawker sea fury flying seen so many on ground doing engine tests but none have seemed to fly! :(

hopefully it will a RIAT this year!

  • I wish You luck in Your search for flying Seafuries :o) Maybe we see us at Fairford ;o)

I have the pilots notes for the Sea Fury...but I think no one will let me fly one :o) but it would be nice if I could see one flying as well...1993 I saw the B1 flying at Tuscon airshow...that was my first dream come true now I wait for the SeaFury, the Mosquito, and the Westland Wyverrn (no piston, I know but unique) an´d I wait for the A400 M (no piston as well ;o) )

  • NICe would be cool to see! i don't thik youll see a mosquito as there is only on eflying at the moment and one being built to fly and both are in australia! :( Love watching the eurofighter typhhon flying!! its fantastic :)

  • the Typhoon yeah..great plane...saw it as it visited AFB Ramstein last year (too bad...no more airshows there) it was a JG 73 bird...liked it very much...no display just a short visit with a low approach for goodbye...

I hope Austria and all other foreign-customers are satisfied with the bird :o)

  • They should be it is a fantastic plane!!!!

Are you going to RIAT 08 this year?

    what airshows you going too?

  • Unfortunatly I am a very busy person to make a living...photographer and 3d Graphics design...therefore I have less time to go to distant places...I plan a RIAT visit because its THE SHOW in Europe when it comes to airplanes...I was in the military and spend some time in Yevoliton with the Westland Helicopters Mk 88 Sea Lynx (and Super Sea Lynx) great experience and a very great time I had their...thumbs up...we also had some french pilots with us..great guys as well

  • Nice!! yevoliton is a fantastic place been a few times! i love the lynxs and harriers they have down there!

  • so my visits are very limited to Saarbrücken and Zweibrücken...smaller shows...therefor I am happy when warbirds are visiting these places

  • sometimes Berlin IAA, but thats so commercial and strict that it reminds on some b&w movies I saw..:o)

  • OHH rite! i like duxford! its fantastic it has ll the warbirds you can imagine!!!!

  • Duxford...I will consider that...cause I need to do some research for all these WW2 beauties...when is it...? maybe I convince my contractors to go there for better examination of the birds...I am looking for the axis planes as well..are there in Duxford also...I had the chance for a visit at Manching where some Messerschmitts are, now I need the Fuck Wulf no Focke Wulf ;o) planes..there are some replicas maybe I go there, but it seems they dont answer my requests...anyhow Seafury rules

  • Yes duxford has those fucking wolfs!:) they do fly the focke wulf 190 at the flying legends show its on july the 12th and 13th last time i had the chance to sit in either the 190 or a spitfire so i chose the spit! good fun! they also have a few 109s. Duxfor airshow is the best place for warbirds they usually have a few b17s and loasd of spits and mustangs

  • great...thx for the information...the B 17? good...that is wonderful I need these birds..as much as the Avro Lancaster...I bet it is along with the legends as well ?

But the Spitfires ( my favorite WW2 bird) are wonderful....I am eager to see them flying...:o)

Mustangs are flying as well ? so its a "must" to be there...

I am suffering under the comment restrictions...so maybe my next comment will be delayed maybe....as I said I am trying to go to the UK to see these birds Fairford and Duxford

  • Yeh last time i think they had 2 B-17s an avro lancaster, about 8 or 9 spits, 6 mustangs and loads others like P-47s, P-39s, F-86s, Hawker hunters you name it they probably had it or close too! though the P-38 'glacier girl' was meant to attend but didn't make it across the atlantic due to engine problems so hopefull its here this time! lol i dunno about my post limit yet!

  • Okay...even the P-38..wow...thats wonderful..

I think the P 38 Lightning is the predecessor of the F 15..they fit in much characteristics

    but I might be wrong with that..its just the looks...Mustang and F 16...Lightning and F 15

  • UMM im not sure about that!? o well they also did have an F-15 and an F-16 at duxford!

  • Hm okay...F 15 and F 16 are very wide spread in Germany espescially near Ramstein...I was just guessing...cause of the missions and tacticts these birds do fit in...

By the way...how do You think about Your situation in Britain concerning the aircraft industry ?...I am very sad that many (not to say all) british companies are catched or united within the EADS system...I dont like that..but it seems its a result of that stupid global economy all politics all politics do hide behind...

  • I hate it that britian can't make an aircraft that is british instead of it being spread through the whole of europe! its crap!!! back in the day we came out wiht some of the greatest aircraft made and with no help form any other countries! it is rubbish! and also the fact that the production of many of the aircraft has been tripled its stupid in my eyes! whats your opinion?

  • its difficult...I am glad that lots of engineers ( without the limits of nationality) are able to go together and build a great aircraft..like the Concorde for example...I just see a problem in identity with knowledge and improvement...we are not united ( even the US is not United..they just see the word nation different from us)...Europe is no Nation, the United States do act as one even they have lots of differences between their states...I miss Saunders, Hawker, Supermarine, Short, Avro..etc.

  • Right with you!!! i don't have anything against having all sorts of engineers building a great aircraf tlike the A380 its just weres the pride in saying i made a screw for the A380 when you can say i built the whole bloody thing!

  • Yeah I am no patriotic thinking person...cause I belong to a notion wich doesnt even exists...anyhow...the improvements of history are all named by companies or even people...the global economy forces us to act together...to build one fist against the politics which dont proclaim human rights...but for buying cheap clothes our econamy is ready to give away all of our western values...and so Your companies which did fight for freedom and human rights did go...thats sad and makes me fear

  • Yeh but we cant really do anything about it can we! the only thing that really slightly goes against it but also dosent is by joing the armed forces!

  • You are right we can not do anything about it...the folks ( the state, the free democrates) is in charge...its their call...not ours ;o)

I dont want to change the world and I am sorry our chat came to that point...sorry for that, realy..

I am enjoying the planes of the past and I am no Don Quijote fighting wind mills...but I am ready to call the a..holes responsible for our defeat against human-right-smashing politics and people..not very popular but neccesary in my eyes..

  • HE HE!!! everyone has dreams!! don't worry about it i love our chats! its fun! can't wait for flying legends!! hopefull;y they have a sea fury!

  • Yeah...so I hope to see a Seafury flying sometimes....thx for Your opinion and chatting...dont get me wrong I am no politician or freedom fighter...I am a capitalist..thats why I can afford to claim such statements...and I am glad the british and americans (sorry for the french and dutch and russians but I did not mention them for a reason) to fight for our freedom...I am glad for the post war politics and behaviour..thx from a german who dont know the meaning of that word..;o)

  • HA HA!!!!!! :):) its nice to know that they get some credit! he he! Great chat! just look at it all we have nearly filled up 2 whole pages!!!

  • I take that back nearly 4 whole pages!

  • dont get me wrong...I like the Airbus...its just the same like Boeing...the result og many companies...I just dont like the idea that monopol-companies are ruling the market..makes it dull and no ideas are created. Money flow rules..thats why they evem build Airbus in China...either they think China is a new market or they are stupid, stupid enough to think China isnt stealing from Airbus..to build their own chinese plane...the western is selling out its knowledge...I am sad about that

  • omg u cant beat the crackly, growly purr of an idling bristol centaurus even if u tried..........

*dreamily* i love the Sea Fury...

  • Me too... no sound quite like it. 18 cylinders?

  • yep. A Bristol Centaurus 18 18-cylinder two-row sleeve-valve radial developing 2550hp is what gets this puppy to defy gravity (in a manner of speaking lol)....

  • This has got to be about as far as piston engined designs could go,a world class designand one af my favourites, thanks for posting.

  • Best piston plane ever build...my favorite....

  • Nice. Thanks for posting!
