My 9-year-old son and I were sitting next to Matt Guitar Murphy on a plane from Miami to New York last month. He told us he was in the movie "Blues Brothers", but I didn't know until I googled him, that he was so well known. He is a really nice guy.
I saw Matt playing at Winterland in S.F. when he was in the James Cotton Band. I got to see them a few times, that Band was Bad Ass and always blew the roof off.
Anybody knows what happened with Billy Stepney? Any whereabouts? Is he still alive? and after this, what came to him? I'd be grateful for any info about him. Thanks
I hate to correct you SunnyRhoades9 but the song is in the Key of G. He's using blues scales and some chromatic approaches. Check it out with your guitar and hear the chords are G-C-D7 or all 7ths/9th chords can be played as well.
i like this version a lot; a slower tempo version w/ M.Slim, W.Dixon & B. Stepney was on my irst blues record purchase (40 years ago), BLUES JAM, still one of my all time favorite albums (JOYS 177)
I listened to this song many years ago. It was in 45 disco about '70. the song was played with electric guitar and faster. I remembered when the assolo plays all instruments stop.
The real Guitar Slim (Eddie Jones) Cd, The Legends of specialty Series Guitar Slim: Sufferin' Mind. Specialty Records.
Google it. The lyrics to this is really something! I was once married to GS's son, Rodney Armstrong (aka) Guitar Slim Jr. NOLA grammy-nonimated musician, he the jr. recently did Jazz-Fest NOLA. For the life of me, I'll never understand why he NEVER plays any of his dad's songs. If I get the chance, I'll show this M.Slim version to him. Gail 901 650 4719
It's funny to see that even at this time, they made several takes. Note that at 1'38 the microphone on the drums is not at the same place that on the top view (1'47)...
I think he was from Chicago. I heard him in the early '70's & he blew everyone away. There was an even better clip that was on youtube but was taken off for estate reasons.
This is called "Matts Guitar Boogie". He did an updated version of this tune on his 1990 CD called "Way Down South" (superb CD. Matts best infact in recent yrs)
If you ever want to hear Matt at his best then try the Memphis Slim "At The Gate Of Horn" CD.(from the late 50s or early 60s) Murphy's tone on this album in totally unique and sends shivers up your spine.
@geobluesman Matt's brother Floyd was a pretty good player in his own right, check out some of Little Junior Parker's early Sun(the original 'Mystery Train) and Duke recordings
A joy to listen to.

This is awesome!
I wish there was a recording of this without the guitar. It would have been an awesome piano boogie.

It's a Gibson ES-345. Matt is a very underrated player...I remember seeing him at BLUES ETCETERA in Chigago -and being thoroughly impressed

One of the most influential guitarists of all time. Chuck Berry used Matt alot on some of his trickiest recordings and did some great solos.
