on what atlas said you may also want to try the 9600 gso for a farm it has 96 stream processors and is only about 70 bucks a pop but almost as fast as a 9800 gt which has 112? stream processors

Atlas, I am building a folding pc. I used your video's to help me along, but alas, i cannot afford to spend 500 a piece on the gpu's. I only have about 150 per gpu left to spend. Do you have any recommendations? I may even be able to go a tiny bit higher but not much. Please respond and let me know. Thanks man

Couldn't you use a cheaper PSU for powering just the CPU? (Like a earthwatts 380 or something?)

Also, you only have one stick of ram there, how much is that? Is that bottle necking the CPU or GPU's at all in terms of folding?

Nope folding at home needs hardly any ram to run. Also, why get another psu just for the CPU? bit pointless when it works fine with 2 psu's. The reason he has 2 psu's is because there isnt any single psu's with enough pci-e power connectors to power 4 gtx295's

powersupplies have their highest efficiency at ~75%. the ram isnt bottle necking because the graphiccards have their own vram of 1792mb per card

my question is: are you running all 4 in sli? is there a bridge for them? or the purpose is to run the cards for the memory only?

Not the memory, the cards are run for the GPUs and ALUs/Shaders.

No SLi bridge as they're all run independently, even every GPU is run independent of each other due to how the F@H client works.

There isn't the drivers to run them all in SLI. he is running them all separately and 1 gpu2 client per core so that's 2 gpu2 clients per card. If he were to play a game on that computer it would only use 1 graphics card. I believe its the one closest to the CPU which has priority.

i have a 9600gt. its not the best but i overclocked it to where it folds almost as fast as a 8800gt! woot!

the 9600gt only has 64 SP's, theres no way that you can overclock it to the performance of a 8800gt with 112 SP's.

@RE4L72 sometimes you don't have to be an adult to make a difference. im 17 as well. i had folding@home running on my ps3 the other day, my dad wlaks in and see's it, and ask's me. what is that? i explained what it does and he is now really considering doing a folding farm with me, what we are planning is using his pc and my PlayStation 3 as the main work units. and then at garage sales buy real cheap dell and others. and start a farm. small step, but we know it will help. GL man
