I play cornet player in a youth band, and it's not always about which instrument is better sounding, it's sbout the player her/him self and how they play it, their own skill!
@basketballcentral6 Trump[ets are not used in British Brass Bands. Cornets are more mellow and fit in with the rest of the instruments. Trumpets are brighter, I agree but they would really stick out in this kind of ensemble. Thanks for your interest.
I only have one thing to say, it was a great cover, I liked it. However, the Trumpets horns should be higher more, like to the stand. Unless thats how they do it there, but other then that, it was very enjoyable.
@bannan61 Sorry my mistake, well then cornets horns should be higher. Well from where Im from they are. Anyways, for my love of "Pirates of the Caribbean" and band. This entertained me a lot. Thanks for the upload.
Man, the trombone and sax section in my band suck lol. They're like as loud as the clarinets -.-. (My band has like 15-25 people and no drummer. >.>) Even the seniors (Around 6 people including me because not enough people signed up for grade 12 band so we had to merge grade 10-12 band together) can play louder than my whole class.
Right now we're learning this song but it sounds so terrible i don't even want to play it. Some grade 10s don't even play at all because they don't know the notes.
Music should not be about competition and whether "I'm better than you" or not. It should be (in my opinion): 1.) providing enjoyment and fulfilment. 2.) Telling a story (films etc.) / conveying an emotion... 3.) Providing comment on the situations of the day (as in protest songs etc.).
It's attitudes like yours that put people off taking up and enjoying music. People play and listen because they enjoy. If people already involved have hifalutin opinions, that's a complete turn-off!
pretty good the brass section was strong and one of the percussionist look over worked which is often good, but the tow trumpets at the back talked to much
i used to play baritone for my school but i quit after 2 years and this year they played this song and i wish i kept playing haha this sounds really good played by bands :)
Why were there adults mixed in, ya, I noticed. No brass band youth trombonists could play that good. Lol, thats coming from a youth trombonists. rofl copter goes swoosh!
I am hardly a youth trombone as I play in many symphonic pieces.
It's a youth band aged 12 to 18 with one adult. He's a teacher and often plays at these entertainment events. Obviously for contests he doesn't play because of the rules. There are no adults in the trombone section - that's Kate Wilson you can hear. She's a very good player who is taking up music professionally.
I am terribly sorry, I was on my no black and white monitor which has terrible resoulution. I can't tell a lizard from a leaf. I see now. I feel really bad now.
@joeywright28 not cool at all dude or dudet. I am a youth trombonist and I can play that. MAYBE EVEN BETTER. That's very offensive to me. Maybe to other youth trombonists. Easy on us.
@spellcat1414 This is a brass band. We also have a wind band that obviously has woodwind as well. Search my site for Oldham Youth Wind Band to hear them. Thanks for your comments.
half the time the conductor looks as if he is trying to fly away lol. man, i wish my brass band conductor would let us play pirates of the carribean. i am solo trumpet and it is sooooooooo boring. he only ever lets us play his compositions. he won't even let us play liberty bell march :(. sad times. well done btw, this sounds amazing. if only i had a time machiene and lived in oldham...
This is a brilliant bit of playing! Not too sure about the conducting in places though . . .althogether a very good performance. I love playing this piece, though I'm convinced that from bar 117 it should go much faster . . .I wish we had a trombone line up like that!
I play cornet in a second section brass band going to the nation championships of great britain in harrogate 2008. I just watched another video performing this and it was awful. For a bunch of youngsters - especially cornets - this was fantastic cos it is quite a difficult piece to play and get to sound good. Well done you lot, keep it up!
You did this in 6th grade?! my band didn't get til 7th and only the 8th grade band performed it! T_T we're still waiting for the music teacher to give it back
It's a youth band aged 12 to 18 with one "old bloke" on cornet. He's a teacher and often plays at these entertainment events. Obviously for contests he doesn't play because of the rules.
My jazz band played this in elementary school along with another song from the movie.... yeah we had 3 guitars one bass drum 1 piano 1keyboard 1 organ 1 flute clarinet and trumpet and 2 saxophones we got a full crowd in the high school auditorium....u guys play it better tho im jealous :-S lol
whose arrangement is this? my 8th grade band is playing michael brown's arrangement and it is almost exactly like this. the only difference i noticed is the part between 2:54 and 3:30. that isn't included in the arrangement we play.
the one thing i can say about this song is that it sucks to play it when you are the only trumpet player in the band. But it is still awesome. And this is played well :)
billthemaxster: My band and I played this last year, and they started the same place mine did. You may have a diferent sheet of music, I'm sure there are many different pieces for Pirates of the Carribbean.
Okay I'm 14 and i play in my town band and we play this piece and it is very enjoyable to play and even better to listen to. And this is very good and it is a youth band but it does not seem to of started at the start of the piece. Wow i did not think that such a band existed in Oldham
The Oldham area is one of the hotbeds of British banding. Take a look at all the Whit Friday contest clips I've posted. As a teenager many years ago the LSSO came over to Castletown and played in the Villa Marina in Douglas. I have fond memories of this trip and the LSSO inspired the Isle of Man to form a youth orchestra (see their website).
I think thats bit harsh thismis a youth band and as a fellow youth band conductor as the guy in the video it is very difficult to keep control on kids as once they et the slightest bit of excitment they are gone. the point of youth bands is not to be perfect but to enjoy urself. Perfection is something that is gathered up over years it cant be thought. you would be seriously wrong to think it goes 200bpm it in fact states on bruce fraisers score that he wishes it to be played at 160bpm!
Yeah its a youth band. What range of ages are there? Because I play in two brilliant youth bands that have played pieces such as Vitae Aeturnum, Where Eagles Sing and Shine As The Light (the latter being the hardest one by far, or for euphoniums and second/1st cornets anyway.)
I wish people would learn the difference between bands and the instruments used in them. Brass bands have Soprano cornets and cornets, a single flugel horn. Tenor horns, euphoniums, baritones, trombones, bass trombones, Eb and BBb basses and percusion.
Please bear in mind, Will, that many of the comments are from the USA. Americans (probably kids) even refer to symphonies, overtures and concertos as "songs" - take a look at some of the comments made on classical music.
