I'm now obsessed with this movie. I was entirely confused when I first saw it. I didn't understand it like i don't understand love and then the more you watch it or experience the more it becomes clear. I can't express how much I love this movie.
I love how the light comes on when he calls her.... thats why this movie is so good.... well theres a ton of reasons.... and yeh I tell ppl all the time this movie is the best and they just complain about it being slow... I do not see it...
Adam Sandler playing to his strengths here - Anger and frustration mixed in with childish vulnerability. He picks some shit movies but if there is one director out there that can pick a cast and make them perform its PT Anderson. Beautiful film.
How do people walk out of this movie? P.T. Anderson is probably the best director working today, and probably the only person, besides Stanley Kubrick, who has never made a bad movie. Punch Drunk Love, Magnolia, Hard Eight, There Will Be Blood, and Boogie Nights, all wonderful films that you can watch multiple times and discover something new each time. The average modern day movie goer is too stupid to understand what a good film is and would rather watch cliches and explosions.
@AshCosgrove They probably went into the movie expecting Billy Madison. I actually wish that happened to me. It would have been such an amazing revelation.
this movie is for lonely people with anxiety. if you've never experienced either of those things i'd imagine its harder to understand and appreciate. either way though, the film is very well done. personally, i loved it.
amazing movie...the 2 disc edition is amazing but i wish they could release it on the criterion collection though...P T anderson deserves at least 1 or 2 criterion collection releases. he's awesome
i love this movie a lot of people give it bad reviews i dont know why this was adam sandler doing something diffrent not like his normal pg-13 just comedy but a comedy drama R rated movie and him saying the f word hilarious
I love this movie. It was very underrated. Quite romantic from a certain point of view. When I first saw it, I was kind of stunned at the way Sandler approached it. It didn't take me long to get into it and appreciate what he did with the character.
@radioheadkids2 Isn't it lovely to see that your pathetically ignorant comment has been removed? Perhaps, you should think before you post something. I am, of course, giving you the benefit of the doubt that you are actually capable of thinking. If I were as stupid as you seem to be, I would go out behind the nearest gas station and put a gun in my mouth. Unfortunately, I hardly think you would know how to pull the trigger. Have a nice day, and kiss my ass. Putz! (Look it up moron.)
Love this movie and this song! "He needs me" is originally from the Altman movie "Popeye" and PT Anderson is a big Altman fan so I guess that's why he picked this track. It really works with the Hawaiian scenery!
a very complex love story, much like reality! subtle things in every scene, to suggest love, sadness, awkwardness and fear. a masterpiece of work. sandlers shining performance, that was all to easy dismissed by the critics, who wanted more of the same.- closed-minded dicks.
@ultrasynthetic - i agree - very underrated flick. When I saw it in the theatres, half the people walked out before mid-point. Me, I purchased the DVD the minute it was available...some people just don't get the subtle nuances and underlying meanings of some films. They'd rather go see "Transformers.
@finch6789 totally agree...most of the people i know are like "emm....what's next?...is he going to propose her?...is he gonna live with her?...oh..i know..he's ill so he's acting like that....nah...i don't like this movie, too slow", people NEED to get their asses off the ussual cliche stuff to apreciate the subtle mood on some movies, btw daniel day lewis loved this film too
Do you notice that he's wearing a red tie before he gets on the plane and it becomes a yellow one when he's in his seat? Do you think that was intentional?
its an odd thing, maybe they shot the plane scene first and then decided to alter the wardrobe for the rest of the movie and just never reshot it and decided it to be so minor a slip, cant see any significance in the tie color really since it never changes in the rest of the movie even though color plays a big part of the film
One of the best movies ever made. Amazingly well put together! Amid the entire world, these two people met and were "meant" to be together -- the MAGIC of two people finding each other amid the crowd of the world!
Sunsihine, while cute at times, isn't half as smart or good a movie as this one. It's really not even close. Sunshine is the indie film cliche fest, and this movie, truly original.
I've only seen this film once and I really like the story! :)
one question though, what is the significance of the color blue here? Sandler's character where the blue suit throughout the film, and also the sudden flashes of blue light like the one in 8:35 and 8:36 ?
I read an interpretation awhile back and the guy says that Barry wears the blue suit because, well... he is blue (emotionally). As for the blue lights through out the film (I think there are red lights as well?), they also have to do with the emotional state of the characters. I could be wrong about this...
i've noticed it in many p.t. anderson films such as magnolia, boogie nights, there will be blood also has it! maybe it's one of his little trademarks.
@milobarron I'm not sure what you mean by "sudden flashes of light," but PTA does use what is known as "glare" alot. Where the b.g. light washes out the frame, creating silhouettes and whatnot. thats one of his little trademarks kind of.
I enjoyed the hell out of this movie. It was a great story, albeit a misunderstood film. Yes, this is one of the best parts of the movie. Check out how the phone lights up when he finally hears her voice. But I also enjoyed the part when he stops running and at last confronts those tormenting blackmailing bastards when he sees that his girlfriend has been hurt by them. Then he kicks the shit out of them. If you haven't seen this movie, give it a chance. But it is not your standard Sandler film.
I think a lot of people don't understand PTA, I mean a lot my friends HATED there will be blood. I think he really understands how to use the film medium much like Kubrick did. Comparing the two directors is not far off because they both understand how to use sound and visuals in order to instill emotions in the viewer.
