Obviously Japanese people haven't heard about teamwork, also I think Disney and Pixar are better when it comes to humor. Japanese animes often has this boob-humor and sexual misunderstandings, witch I just facepalm everytime i see it.
Studio Pierrot has a lots of disappointing animes and tends to be really lazy with their animations but one thing they are great for is the talking scenes because that's what they're good for if you want a better animation studio take a look at Gainax and Madhouse they are really great but underrated compared Toei Animation and Studio Pierrot in my opinion
@TheMetalicShadow Shows like The Boondocks and Avatar are animated off-shore, like a lot of "American" animation, as well as US-funded/commissioned works like Afro Samurai and The Animatrix. Artist & character designer Yoshitaka Amano once had his designs & storyboard animated as a Canada-France-US co-production called "1001 Nights"... it's not like Naruto though. Americans have also worked in the Japanese industry as animators, like Jamie Vickers (at MadHouse) who is considered "sakuga".
This stuff is so awesome, i always noticed distinct animation styles and such as a kid but didnt know how to describe it. Id tell my friends how i didnt like this "art style" and such, but they wouldnt even notice. They'd look at me and say "It all looks the same to me.." and id just be frustrated haha. Now I know im not crazy! haha Sakuga... seriously awesome stuff.
You were partially right about Disney animators given their own character, but you failed to mention that if there are characters interacting in a seen that they must be drawn by one animator. Disney realized this when working on Bambi in the seen with him and Thumper on the ice.
I wish i could have gone to this panel *sigh* so few people these days even appreciate animation as a medium here in the west as its viewed as for kids which always gets me into fits of rage explaining why animation isnt one thing its a medium to be used to convey something be it a story or just to accompany music. great panel guys.
@TheMetalicShadow Persistence in the face of tedium, and a trained ability to conceptualize and draw things rapidly. That's speaking as a non-professional who studied 2D and 3D, but never got into it as a career due to the amount of work it takes to create just mere seconds of product. If you like to draw all day every day nonstop in a variety of styles, and have a mind for the dissection of motion, you might "have what it takes".
That was amazing XD! Hey, I was wondering where can you learn to do sakuga? Like a school that teaches this type of drawing, I want to learn this style so badly :)
@BruceLeedar I kind of agree too, but by using the name Sakuga we got the attention of one of the ACEN staffers who was a fan of those videos online, without that guy we may not have had a panel. Its a strange conundrum.
Thanks you for doing these! I remember I used to spend hours on end dazzled by these sakuga videos and looking up the animators involved but since everything was in japanese I had a tough time finding content. Before I knew it it'd be 5 am with school 2 hours later. Now I can have a more detailed description on the history of these and the animators involved. Thanks again!
I want to thank you. I don't get to make it out to as many cons as I would like to but when I do go I'm the guy to hangs out in the panel rooms the whole time. I wish more people would post their anime panels like they do with hacker convention panels. I had plans to go to ACen this year but they fell through.
I'm quite surprised to see a panel dedicated to the underground-esque knowledge of Sakuga animators and all. Using Yutapon was an awesome choice as well. He's one of my favorite animators like others who've commented. Let's hope for more animator social interaction in the future!
Yutaka Nakamura is one of my all time favorite animators..he is simply amazing!
He isn't working as often as he was back in 2008..last thing I saw from him was his little part at the end of episode one of Star Driver..I would love to see back in the spotlight.
@Reanimator999 You can see 'em if you search Twitter for this video's URL. Another one was like, "Sakuga is a universal language!". I don't know the Japanese language, so I'm stuck with the mostly unintelligible Google Translate to read the tweets.
On the AniPages Daily forum, @bahijd (of Shithead Action fame) said he "showed the video to some japanese sakuga people, they couldn't stop laughing, because they thought it's funny people have such interst and knowledge to sakuga outside of japan."
I know Bahijd pretty well. I'm the one who brought him to Anipage Daily back few years ago. I was hoping for a tweeter link. Anyway, I'm glad to see a serious presentation about Sakuga that is trying to tell the relevance of good animation in Japanese visual storytelling.
So few people! I'm shocked, I was expecting, if not, a whole lot more interest in animation. I suppose it's rather early for that, since sakugas have hitten the surface only recently, but it's still a sorry sight. I hope there'll be more interest in the near future. I'd like to see a whole room packed for lectures like this. Animators should be treated like rockstars, they deserve to be.
@5ArmedSkeleton More people trickled in as the thing progressed, particularly off-camera, but yeah, assorted scheduling and promotion issues caused our panel to remain somewhat obscure. If we do it next year, we'll try to land a good time slot and promote the hell out of it.
Yutaka Nakamura is a great animator with his dynamic and very fast-paced animation, and I'm very glad that he has been introduced in these videos. He has been one of my favorite animators who have influenced me into animations in anime. Thank very much for these sets of videos, I learned a lot about animations and more animators.

@KHdarkRoxas ¿Como es Chido? ¿Es un "typo", o tiene una palabra deferente? (lo siento, mi español no es buena)

@neilworms1 jaja no, no es un tipo "esta chido" = "is cool" or "is great" is very common but not if it appears in the dictionary

Does anyone know if there is such a thing as "American Anime" like Naruto or something.

@kungfuremix There is no such thing as 'sakuga style'.
I agree now with those people that think propagandising the 'sakuga' term is harmful...
