  • Great talk, learnt a lot from this. I love the section on self-determination, very interesting theory.

  • Gamefy Education!!

  • Let me save you a LOT of time:

    1. "Gamification" is not the way, you can't just assign points to everything: He delivers his vision of the world where everything is based on points, which is kinda scary and thus perhaps worth watching, but then, those are the 11 mins jabbaughfc suggested to skip.

    2. People's motivations differ from context to context, "pleasurification" should take all that into account when designing incetives to X.

    3. Did I miss anything? Anything at all?

  • YOU are the product, ENJOY!

  • This lecture is sooo drawn out. His ideas could have easily been conveyed in 10 minutes or less. His psychology is sloppy: control groups, experimental groups, poor explanation of the Flynn effect. And he erroneously bloviates about psychology not being interested in pleasure! Ugh, disrespectful. Read How Pleasure Works: The New Science of Why We Like What We Like and somebody please set this guy straight.

  • tldr; derp

  • Bill Hicks is rolling in his grave.

  • I think "The Pleasure Revolt" would be a much more memorable title for this talk.

  • The question I'd really like to ask is : how can we help kids (and ourselves?) compete with devious attacks of well researched pleasure-sellers?

I already find it hard to work on my hobbies each night after work, when Xbox's false "achievements" are waiting in the next room. I'm not ready to go luddite and throw it all out (my hobbies revolve around creating entertainment!). So how should I (or anyone) go about overcoming these million dollar distractions and empty manipulative pleasures?

  • this is retarded, what if this things get hacked ?

  • i think SMBC thought of something like the start of this video.

  • Please make it past the first 11 minutes. The first 11 minutes is only example of a way marketing will not work. The presentation after that is very well thought out and challenging.

    Great presentation.

  • WAIT! Please watch past the 10 minute mark before upvoting akompsupport's comment. The doomsday scenario at the start is only there to show how ridiculous the gamification of everything would be. This was a great talk. After seeing so many people talk about how to gamify everyday experiences, it's good to see some common sense applied! Thank you.

  • @starsky51 Luddites with A.D.D. unite! hehe

  • @starsky51 "The doomsday scenario at the start is only there to show how ridiculous the gamification of everything would be. "

    No. He is being serious.....

  • @starsky51 Doomsday scenario? Man, we're already there.

  • 1984 someone said?

  • @mmhrtn

Did you watch past the first 11 minutes? Because the actual talk started after that. The beginning was just a parody or a doomsday scenario of over-gamifying...

  • @vesavuorinen I do not think the talk started after 11 minutes. The first 10 minutes pretty much shows us the possibilities for commercial branding in the near future. Presenting a doomsday scenario is showing what is possible, maybe not for bright good intended folks, but surely for the a broad spectrum of the commercial industries.

  • I want wifi connected toilet paper so every time i wipe my own ass i will get 10 points and it will automatically upload it to facebook :)

  • This is disgusting.

  • @eddypdeb I hope companies aren't watching this.

  • Totalitarian game industry, oh my

  • Comment removed

  • Aah yes. There's some cool ideas, but I'd not rather companies linger their advertising throughout my daily life like that.

  • Timothy Leary is back!

  • Points are the prime motivation, you've spectated deep and far Mr. Schell.

  • @mystrdat + 1

  • Absolutely Awesome Talk

  • I dont think I want advertisment systems polluting my thought streams while I sleep. I don't want an E-ink tattoo to advertise for some corporation. I am sure there are people who will submit to this sort of self-abuse and humiliating exploitation. I don't want a technology empowered Skinnerbox style behaviorist token economy. The capitalist economy and it's mental pollution is already pernicious enough.

  • @akompsupport dude, just watch past 11 minutes...

  • I felt like I was in a psychology party white listening to this -_-
