This was a point for shure. (Along with the fact that Rio hosted Pan Am Games in 2007 almost in Olympics standards, rasing the bar so high to this continental competition.)
Well, I'm from Chicago and I'm happy Rio won ... as are most Chicagoans who understand political economy ... and the fact that hosting the Olympics is far more expensive than what tourism covers.
Our city -- and our country -- are not in the best shape right now and politicians can no longer use the Olympics as an attention-shifting tactic.
I've always wanted to visit Rio and 2016 is a great incentive.

i felt Tokyo had a stronger bid but i think with the selection of South Africa for the world cup the world was putting a lot of pressure on the IOC to pick a city that was part of a developing nation. Hopefully Rio can fix it's rampant crime in the shantytowns (unlikely) or find a way to minimize it's impact on the games without resorting to heavy protection. Good luck and congratulations Rio.

I couldn't disagree more. I've been personally to the games of Atlanta and Beijing, and my wife to Sidney and Beijing - we both agree that 2008 was BY FAR the best games recently. Every thing worked almost perfectly.
I think you might be confusing the venues issue with Athens. The water cube is still a great sucess, the tennis center nows hosts the China Open, the National Indoor Stadium is always scheduled... the only "mistake" was the National Stadium.
We "yanks" are anxious to make up for the Atlanta fiasco.
And it is yet to be seen if London will be "brilliant". My impression is that Londoners are quite lackadaisical about the whole thing and the venues are to be bland value-engineered temporary facilities located in dreary areas. London isn't known for its natural beauty any more than Chicago is.

Only saying your assumtion that London's games will be "brilliant" is premature. This could come down to the different way Americans and Brits use the term "brilliant". Brits tend to use the word very often, while Americans use the term reservedly to describe something truly superlative. Had you said the London Olympics will be "great", I wouldn't have argued.
There's no contradiction. Beijing's games impressed because of the lavish expenditure. Temp stadia are practical but less impressive.

I couldn't disagree more. I've been personally to the games of Atlanta and Beijing, and my wife to Sidney and Beijing - we both agree that 2008 was BY FAR the best games recently. Every thing worked almost perfectly.
I think you might be confusing the venues issue with Athens. The water cube is still a great sucess, the tennis center nows hosts the China Open, the National Indoor Stadium is always scheduled... the only "mistake" was the National Stadium.

And it is yet to be seen if London will be "brilliant". My impression is that Londoners are quite lackadaisical about the whole thing and the venues are to be bland value-engineered temporary facilities located in dreary areas. London isn't known for its natural beauty any more than Chicago is.
Rio I am sure will put on a spectacular celebration in 2016. They really, really want it, certainly more than Chicago or Tokyo.

Beijing's expensive, unused white elephant facilities are already falling into disrepair. Beijing was the old Olympic model - a developing country trying to impress the world (and succeeding) with spectacular architecture and displays of wealth but not thinking about what happens afterwards. It was a damn-the-consequences coming out party that developed democratic countries really can't hope to top, because their governments have to answer to the people for the proper allocation of resources.
