You did a great job spearfishing holding your breath, that's really the sportmans' way to do it. I cant stand guys hunting with Scuba.... I did a lot of spearfishing in South America and miss it, the water in CA is very cold... My Mares air speargun has been waiting for me for years... ignore coments that dont come from vegetarians, they let others do the killing for them.... and the Buddha said... "I eat vegetables coz I cant hear them scream when I cut them " :-)
If you are into diving the north coast for abalone and fish you need to check out these 2 web site's you should check out the first one is my dive forum called nor cal underwater hunters.com and the other on eis abalone ten divers all about trophy abalone, and it looks like one of you got a ten incher way to go and another that came dam close !
@aLilBitOEverything I'm not sure if there are necessarily more of them, but the lings definitely come in shallower in northern CA vs southern CA. In So-Cal its rare to see them in less than 50 feet of water, but up here I've shot quite a few in less than 15 feet. I think it's a temperature thing- it gets too warm for them in the shallows in so-cal.
@Battlelurker I use the "Eye of Mine" modified housing, but my understanding is that GoPro will be coming out with their own fix for the focus issue soon.
where in mendo was this? i went to several different spots in the mendo area in september, but i didn't see any rockfish. just surfperch and a couple cabezon
Dear AH: I was not preaching. I'm aware that when I open a can of tuna that it's been caught and killed for my consumption. Also, judging by your response, you sound like a very decent person. I'm sorry if I offended you.
Fyi, I have a particular affection for anything related to Mendocino as that is where my father was born and raised. The Nicholson House Inn is named after his/my family.

Why would anyone want to display their driving spears into fish while watching them wriggle to their deaths? And the music is just another gross testament to the lack of respect you show to the life of your catch. Do you spin small animals around by their tails as well? I have no qualms with the catching and eating of seafood, but at least show a little decorum to the life you take so belligerently.
@denmark722 denmark, I assure you that no group treats their catch with as much respect as freedive spearfisherman. Spearfishing is a highly selective and sustainable means of harvest. I take no sadistic pleasure of any sort in the death of fish. All game was dispatched as quickly as physically possible. You might not like watching fish die, but every time you buy salmon at Safeway, a fish died much more cruelly than those in my video. Please take your preaching elsewhere.
@dustyyoungblood I'm not sure... maybe 2 feet or so. Kelp rockfish will often do what this one did where they turn and stare at you, so my buddy and I planned to drop down on this one and then I'd approach it until it stopped to stare at me, then he'd shoot it while it was looking at me. The sequence of events went almost as we planned, but not quite. I'm glad you like it.
Is nelson using a rob allen with a single 16mm band and 6.6mm shaft in this vid?
