This episode really bothered me, not because it was so bad, but because of how good it was. We finally see how Lex and Clark's legendary rivalry begins and they decide to up and leave us in the lurch because of Rosenbaum's departure. WTF?! For those who say he needed to leave because Smallville would have ended after season 8 is a load of B.S! I could have totally seen Lex use Doomsday to try and kill Clark, see him match wits with Zod in season 9 and prove to Darkseid that he was Clark's equal
I don't understand all the anger towards Lex, i mean, he thought he was saving the world and was going to sacrifice his life for it. He just wanted people to love him, everybody always hated him even when he was trying to be good.
um, i still dont know how the both of them got out, i mean yeah lex got all messed up and moved around in that 18 wheeler but how did clark end up in Russia i think?
Even though Lex is evil and clarks enemy, I think it's great that the writers had Lex tell Clark he loved him like a brother, it shows their past meant something.
@CK8smallville I liked that line even though people do not think it make sense having lex say i love you like a brother clark but it has to end this way.
Considering how horrible the final three seasons were Lex was right "It has to end this way." I mean let's face it the two of them dying together would be pretty bad ass.
@MrAnonymous13000 i woulden't say they were horrible but the the last 3 seasons were the worst of the show but still pretty decent but not as good as the first 4 seasons they were the best of the show
I think MR is the best Lex actor, and the second best comic book actor next to Heath Ledger. That is because Heath died, so MR could have been first, who knows.
Lex believed what he was doing was right, he tried to sacrifice his own life for the human race.
you know later after the smallville season 10 finale doomsday decides to appear and finally kill superman, for a month and then superman wakes up from being dead, guess he can't die, he can just go into a coma, lex shoud've worked that out at the end of superman:doomsday. superman can only die of old age, kryptonite kills him, yes but put kryptonite away from him and put him in front of the yellow sun for month or two and his injuries woud've been healed, SPOILER!
You can tell that Lex really cared for Clark. He didn't want to do the things he did but he truely believed that Clark was there to take over the world. Who can blame him? We all know Clark has his reasons for not trusting Lex but Lex will never understand those reasons.
I can't help but think of Clark and Lex's sad transition from best friends to bitter enemies everytime they are in a scene together but unfortunately destiny had different plans for them.
@hasthen19 the 'kryptonite' is fragments of his homeworld. These pieces of meteorite contain high levels of kryptonian radiation after the planets distruction, harming those kryptonians on earth who are exposed to it.
@hasthen19 clark was protected in the ship built for him by jor-el. clark is a kryptonian, non a human being, therefore making him weak to kryptonian radiation emitted by those rocks.
Make way people we will see MR as Lex Luthor one more time for the Smallville finale! I can't wait to see how Lex returns, I can't wait to see CK become Superman but it sadens me that one of my favourite shows and a show i have watched since the begining will be coming to an end :( I have fond memories watching every Tuesday then Wednesday then Thursday and now Friday. Great show I will miss it.
@Buckeyesbucknut1983 he did survive. Lex is going to make his return to smallville in the finale that is comming up in a couple of months ( IT IS GOING TO BE AWSOME)
It just seems like Lex's fall from grace, his descent into darkness, almost all of it was about half Clark's fault and half Lex's fathers. If Clark had just trusted him with his secret near the early years, when their friendship was strong..most if not all of the terrible things that Lex has done would have never happened. When I saw this it almost made me dislike Clark as a character.
@Jarrecko somehow that's fate -- there's this another moment when Lex blames Clark for what he'd become and says it's because he turned his back on him but on the other hand Clark answers that Lex has always been attracted by power... and that is the reason why Clark thought it was better not to tell Lex how powerful he was. So the both of them were looking for the better... in a different point of view!
@Jarrecko actually it was the kents who pressured clark into not telling...all his life Clark was pretty much lead to believe that his secret was to remain A SECRET. So it wasnt clarks fault really. Even then Lex showed a dark side so enough reason not to reveal something as amazing as Clark.
I never caught some of Lex' final words until now. He said, "I love you like a brother Clark but it has to end this way." Deep down inside Lex still cared for him but it seems that he wanted to be a hero by sacrificing both of their lives for the human race. Kinda makes you wonder if they really could have accomplished greater things together....
@oneness978 Well, with how Lex was good originally and his father didn't even show compassion to him, Lex probably wouldn't have went down the path he did if Clark (his only friend) showed more trust in him. In season 3 Lex finds out and tells Clark that his secret is safe with him, but after forgetting Clark went back to lying, which made Lex believe he was working with the other aliens. Anyway this is an epic season finale.
This finale was epic. The build up to it was epic. That moment when Lex turns around and sees the Clark, the camera angles and the music is just soooooo epic.
things would have gone on a lot diffrently if lex dicided to stop that group of people oliver, chole, lana, lois even tess may have seen him diffrenlty and clerk maybe would have seen the firend he lost a long time ago
@william93848 They both had to die only to resurrect sooner or later by someone or something.
Lex was more deeper attract to the dark side since Clark betraied him.
Then Lex become really an evil character and kills everyone or almost everyone, after Superman's ascension (2013), who unfortunely never takes place in that year. Remember Lex's future in Hourglass, Smallville finale could take place then, but is ending in 2011.
...the fans IMO! Was to me anyway! Nothing happened. I know Lana appears for some eps in Season 8 and I cannot wait because I love her, but I so hope they bring Lex back at some point in the final series even though I heard he's not, so i dunno. Anyway, I'm going to watch the rest soon enough and hope for the best so I'll try and not to be too negative. ANYWAY!! Rant over! I'm going to bed!
Okay! I have just watched the Season 7 finale, not watched season 8 and 9 yet, but OMG!! I'm SO let down!! >=( After Lana is left in that coma thing and wasn't in a few episodes after it happened I was like "Okay, she'll recover by the final episode and be back for another series :)" (I knew she went out of it, but I thought it was end of series 8 or something..) and then that goodbye tape comes along.. That SUCKED!! And then the "show down" betwen CK and LL... Was a total middle finger to...
I agree, 2 years later and this scene still has stayed with me. There was no more denying that in fact, he was an alien..Lex had been orbiting his secret for many seasons, and to see Lex in the Fortress for the very first time, is priceless...
And yes, this season may have been a let down, being Michael Rosenbaums last, but this scene makes up for it, and in fact, cements him (in my mind) as the charachter he was born to play....
I'll be brief... the entirety of the smallville series (seven years up to this point), all focused on the clark/lex confrontation... the confrontation that would see clark revealing his true self as lex's speculative mind had suggested. This finale basically keeps clark in denial about being the traveler. He never truly admits himself to lex, EVEN THOUGH lex knows the truth..
this is also the end of Lex, as we do not see him again... this was the end of the smallville series for me
season 7 had so much potential by throwing supergirl in the mix and lana knowing his secret and what the those shitty writers do: gave kara memory loss and put her in the phantom zone, fucked up lana so she left, gave fake jimmy his on episode, and worst of all put clark and lex in this shitty veritas storyline that is all bs and it sucked so much that after this scene its never metioned again and since lex is alive hes gonna forget clark's secret or him completly for the villian in him to rise
My God....two years later and this scene still astonishes me. Granted, I NEVER liked the whole Veritas storyline, it sounded like one, big old retcon some hobo dreamt up and pitched to the studio, but this scene...THIS SCENE......is GOLDEN, and makes up for that Veritas arc IMHO(NOT FACT, JUST MY OPINION!!!) But I'll go as bold as to say Michael Rosenbaum is, and may forever be, THE definitive Lex Luthor.
@peterlopes88 Actually it didn't act as a kryptonite per ce...it's just that the orb can be manipulated by humans only...if you notice the orb was never touched by Clark...first Lex and then Tess in season 8...
Me too. It was a great finale except their confrontation should have losted longer in duration as you mentioned. I think the writer's strike totally fucked up not only Smallville's writing, but other t.v. finales too. The writer's strike began after "Fracture"...so for them to have written such stellar episode like Traveler, Veritas, Descent, Apocalypse, Quest and Arctic is an amazing thing and we should be very proud. Heroes...on the other hand, got massacred with only 11 episodes, SV got 20.
@DevedeseteSuNajNaj I agree. Heroes and Smallville were, and still are, my favorite shows. Unlike Smallville Heroes got murdered by the writers strike. This forced the writers to change, what would have been, an explosive ending to Heroes season 2. Did you know how season 2 was originally going to end?
@DevedeseteSuNajNaj I agree. Smallville and Lost were one of the very few shows spared from the wrath of the writers strike. Heroes, which was one of my all time favorite shows, got totally destroyed by the strike and since then it was on a down hill spiral. *Sigh* it's a real shame.
Yet I still don't see why everyone hated S7. Sure, it had sucky episodes like Hero and Sleeper...but all the other ones were nothing short of brilliant. This season was epic and one of my favourites.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
smallville should've ended in season 6 while all the cast is still there (except for pete and jonathan kent).. and superman suppose to leave smallville after he graduated in HS.. now the only original characters is chloe and clark in season 8 & 9.. and by the way, the show is always in metropolis not smallville.. i think they have to change their title to "metropolis"..
Too many seasons. I LOVE Smallville, but it is supposed to end when Clark graduated HS, if not sooner. Remember the Movie, he left Smallville when he was in HS.
@ardentsentry Consider this show as an "elseworld" tale. It doesn't directly follow the comics or the movies. It takes whatever it wants from each medium. So if you want to criticize the show, do so within the show's context. Not because it doesn't follow the comics. It never claimed to from the start.
Yeah and as soon as he grabs doomsday and flys or jumps really high (who knows) its just over, i was excited to see the justice league but they dont show much at all. this episode could have been alot better, i wanna see how the first episode of the ninth season will play off and maybe we can judge this one a lil different then
What makes this argument so powerful is that both have valid point. They both are right, but only about what they did to each other. The only difference is that Lex has been fed false information courtesy of Brainiac. Given his history with Clark - or how he views it in his mind - he won't listen to anything else. All he feels is the betrayal and is too blind to see his own mistakes in what led to the dissolution of this friendship.
this is scary if u read this this far u will die in 10 days if u dont send to any 15 videos in 2 hours good luck hope u dont die !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The point is Lex hgad been told a lie for a long time that Clark was a threat, gonna take over the planet, and Lex thought he'd better do something 'good' to take that back, for 'the safety of the people'. Clark was intended NO such thing. This can really apply to how people have been lied to about Jesus Christ's (God's) real intension - His real intension to save all humanity from Hell and judgement, but people treat that like it's a bad thing.
do they bring lex back from the brink of death?? i hope so.cmon let some holy force bring bak the best dam character on the show.WITHOUT LEX THAT SHOW IS SO HOLLOW!that and fuking lana leaves to.WTF!i hope they bring lex bak!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Alexrider6S, Dude this is the season 7 finale. I noticed your post 1 week ago. Season 8 has been out for over 3 months, and clark is the man of the show. How can he be dead?????? Lex is missing.
Awesome. What a great scene to end the season with. The only final scene to rival it is the Season 4 finale. That was awesome, as you had no idea it would become the Fortress of Solitude. Or at least I didn't.
yeah, i agree (although i knew it would become the fortress) but that was my favorite finale of all time (S4), until now! the music is awesome in this scene too
i got the dvd last night, and watched this scene like 5 times. i personally think it's the best scene in the entire series. awesome lighting, lex dressed in black, Clark with red and blue. it works on so many levels.
I have to say, I was really let down by season 7. It was just inconsistent. they would have an awesome episode that did a great job building the plot, and then the next 3 episodes and what the awesome episode was building to was just terrible. Descent is by far the best episode of season 7. The finale seemed very very bloated due to the writers trying to tie up all of Smallville's loose ends in about 2 episodes. I'm afraid Smallville needs to end unless they can revive it next season.
Yea he's not gonna b a regular on smallville anymore. He may come back 4 one episode in season 8. His assistant, tess mercer, and Doomsday are going to be the primary villains.
mm yeh amazin endin (crap) o yh and another point id like to make is where the hell is all the action i meen whenever clark gets near someone and summat goods gonna happen someone gets a block of kryptonite out and clark just lies there. nuff sed
smallviles shit 7 seasons and nowts happened plus nobody looks like they shud and clark still is noway near becoming superman plus effects are shit and the story is way too slow. btw i used to like till i realised i was wasting my time as nothing ever happens!!
Geoff Johns has apparently inked a deal with Smallville's writing staff to help them bring the Legion of Superheroes into the show. look for them this comming season.
Geoff,if u dont know, is the current artist and story writer for FINAL CRISIS, the current Green Lantern series(wrote "Sinestro Corps War" and "Rebirth"), The Flash from 2003, brought back the Teen Titans, writer of Infinite Crisis, and also wrote the "52" series.ill bet he is more than capable of bringing the legion in smallville
Wondered how they are going to find a loop for this now that Lex knows his secret? I think that Lex choose to destroy the Fortress of Solitude Instead of controling Clark. Maybe I am wrong! I am just curious!
this is the 7th season and the eightth is last and final season. lex luthor will not be coming back on the show anymore =[ and maybe he meant 21 episodes? idk but there will only be one more season.
This episode really bothered me, not because it was so bad, but because of how good it was. I hate how "Epic" has become a like an "in" word in today's culture. Because it tarnishes the word. so it's not as effective.
I say this cause I want to say that this scene is what Epic was supposed to mean. and I don't want anyone thinking that I'n trying to sound cool.
This was the most Epic scene in Smallville. But I love most Clark and lex scenes

Watch closely folks. At this scene smallville finaly ends, and becomes superman/JL. RIP SMALLVILLE.

Man this was such a pathetic season finale, and a terrible season at that. Probably the worst they've had.

why didn't Clarck superspeed and took off the crystal from Lex?
peterlopes88 2 years ago 3
because the crystal which is actually an orb acted like kryptonite to Clark so he couldnt take it off Lex

@peterlopes88 Actually it didn't act as a kryptonite per ce...it's just that the orb can be manipulated by humans only...if you notice the orb was never touched by Clark...first Lex and then Tess in season 8...

Wish their final scene had lasted a LOT longer!
FlyClark6 2 years ago

@DevedeseteSuNajNaj the stike has the fault of lionel luthor's death
dellago10000 1 year ago
@DevedeseteSuNajNaj I agree. Heroes and Smallville were, and still are, my favorite shows. Unlike Smallville Heroes got murdered by the writers strike. This forced the writers to change, what would have been, an explosive ending to Heroes season 2. Did you know how season 2 was originally going to end?
Scoonertuna 1 year ago
@DevedeseteSuNajNaj I agree. Smallville and Lost were one of the very few shows spared from the wrath of the writers strike. Heroes, which was one of my all time favorite shows, got totally destroyed by the strike and since then it was on a down hill spiral. *Sigh* it's a real shame.
Scoonertuna 8 months ago
Yet I still don't see why everyone hated S7. Sure, it had sucky episodes like Hero and Sleeper...but all the other ones were nothing short of brilliant. This season was epic and one of my favourites.

smallville should've ended in season 6 while all the cast is still there (except for pete and jonathan kent).. and superman suppose to leave smallville after he graduated in HS.. now the only original characters is chloe and clark in season 8 & 9.. and by the way, the show is always in metropolis not smallville.. i think they have to change their title to "metropolis"..

Too many seasons. I LOVE Smallville, but it is supposed to end when Clark graduated HS, if not sooner. Remember the Movie, he left Smallville when he was in HS.
ardentsentry 2 years ago
well now its more based in Metropolis than in Smallville
DragonBlaze67 2 years ago
I always thought the show should have ended after the fourth season, but then turned into a spin off called "Metropolis"
They wouldnt even have to change a thing since the story now is set in metropolis and all that
Darthlongi 2 years ago
@ardentsentry ya in the movie 10 years past while he was in the cave.. the show show what happend in those 10 years.
jwb864 1 year ago
@ardentsentry Consider this show as an "elseworld" tale. It doesn't directly follow the comics or the movies. It takes whatever it wants from each medium. So if you want to criticize the show, do so within the show's context. Not because it doesn't follow the comics. It never claimed to from the start.

very true, i really wanted to see clark and doomsday go at it and they did....for like one min, LAME!!!
2AllDay8 2 years ago
I know. It's like going to a Rocky movie and the bad guy hits Rocky a couple of times and then Rocky hits him once and wins the match in Round 1.
I wanted to see the Justice League have a few shots at Doomsday and then see Clark finish business after a long, hard fight.
Timesobserver 2 years ago
Yeah and as soon as he grabs doomsday and flys or jumps really high (who knows) its just over, i was excited to see the justice league but they dont show much at all. this episode could have been alot better, i wanna see how the first episode of the ninth season will play off and maybe we can judge this one a lil different then
2AllDay8 2 years ago
What makes this argument so powerful is that both have valid point. They both are right, but only about what they did to each other. The only difference is that Lex has been fed false information courtesy of Brainiac. Given his history with Clark - or how he views it in his mind - he won't listen to anything else. All he feels is the betrayal and is too blind to see his own mistakes in what led to the dissolution of this friendship.
Artisan1979 2 years ago
why didn't clark just roundhouse kick lex in the face during all that talking?
boreddude56 2 years ago
because that crystal lex had, clark can't get close. it's like when he is exposed to Kryptonite. he can't get near it.

this is scary if u read this this far u will die in 10 days if u dont send to any 15 videos in 2 hours good luck hope u dont die !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Monechetti 2 years ago
The point is Lex hgad been told a lie for a long time that Clark was a threat, gonna take over the planet, and Lex thought he'd better do something 'good' to take that back, for 'the safety of the people'. Clark was intended NO such thing. This can really apply to how people have been lied to about Jesus Christ's (God's) real intension - His real intension to save all humanity from Hell and judgement, but people treat that like it's a bad thing.

Awesome. What a great scene to end the season with. The only final scene to rival it is the Season 4 finale. That was awesome, as you had no idea it would become the Fortress of Solitude. Or at least I didn't.
Reevys 3 years ago
yeah, i agree (although i knew it would become the fortress) but that was my favorite finale of all time (S4), until now! the music is awesome in this scene too

i got the dvd last night, and watched this scene like 5 times. i personally think it's the best scene in the entire series. awesome lighting, lex dressed in black, Clark with red and blue. it works on so many levels.
Triforia 3 years ago 2
this season finale has to be the weakest finale smallville has ever done
HllywoodPrk010 3 years ago
It really was....
JB0523 3 years ago
I have to say, I was really let down by season 7. It was just inconsistent. they would have an awesome episode that did a great job building the plot, and then the next 3 episodes and what the awesome episode was building to was just terrible. Descent is by far the best episode of season 7. The finale seemed very very bloated due to the writers trying to tie up all of Smallville's loose ends in about 2 episodes. I'm afraid Smallville needs to end unless they can revive it next season.

does lex leave smallville
ryananderson280195 3 years ago
Yea he's not gonna b a regular on smallville anymore. He may come back 4 one episode in season 8. His assistant, tess mercer, and Doomsday are going to be the primary villains.

THIS IS HOW THEY END IT!!!!!

mm yeh amazin endin (crap) o yh and another point id like to make is where the hell is all the action i meen whenever clark gets near someone and summat goods gonna happen someone gets a block of kryptonite out and clark just lies there. nuff sed

smallviles shit 7 seasons and nowts happened plus nobody looks like they shud and clark still is noway near becoming superman plus effects are shit and the story is way too slow. btw i used to like till i realised i was wasting my time as nothing ever happens!!

I am just curious!

they really promoted that this was going to be a big epic fight scene and i was gravely disappointed they all they did was talk.
