@paintch3ck interesting. However in the video he is using a non-rifled barrel and it seems pretty darn accurate at 80 yds. I know the basics of rifling; it just didn't seem to make much difference in this video.
@Bluelunes thats it save yourself $200-300 on the rifled barrel and buy some ammo to practice....I laugh all the time at these guys buying "slug barrels". Watch hickok45 video with the Mossberg with only a front sight slam the gong......smooth bore. Not to mention 18 1/2" barrel length!
@Bluelunes The slugs themselves are rifled. If you are shooting a shotgun barrel you would use rifled slugs in it. If you are shooting a rifled slug barrel, then you would use a sabot slug which is not rifled. Oddly the sabot slugs are usually a lot more expensive (to go with your expensive rifled barrel). The rifled barrel gives you an advantage at longer ranges, but here in Tennessee we rarely get a shot at a deer that is more than 100 yards so why bother with the rifled barrel?
@fatguyonmoped12 no they dont cause guns are like having miney inthe bank ,,, well if u no what to look for u buy shit it will kill you u buy shit tht goes up its like having money in your pocket cause u always get what ui want out it
@TheAngeloakers you sir just blew...MY MIND >,< but it is true, id rather have guns then money...but i still would like a house...and centrel heating...and food. but you make a good enough point
@TheAngeloakers i started hunting when i was about 7 and i'm 19 now, that and guns are my passion so i love anything about guns. unless it's a super over dramatic action movie that involves inrealistic gun physics, then i don't like it
@Thirsty4stalin There is a big difference in the power between a low brass 2-3/4" 7/8 game load vs a high brass 3" buck shot load. With that wide of a power difference it is a difficult feat of engineering to make an automatic action (semi-auto) cycle properly under all loads. That said unless something is wrong your pump should cycle every time.
@hickok45 - You can paint those targets with some radiant collors, like pink, yellow(you did sometimes),green....just for them to pop up from the surroundings. :)
@xmike8259x yes you can but use rifled slugs. its the opposite of a rifle. instead of the barrel having spiral grooves to spin the bullet as it leaves the barrel, (rifle). with a smoothbore shotgun you buy rifled slugs, (essentially rifled bullets) that spin when contacting the smooth barrel.
dont forget to be aware of the type of choke you have, you can shoot slugs out of most of the more open chokes, and if your brave even a full choke (check with the guns manual before doing that!!!!!!
@MrCamerican Full choke (not a screw in) is usually fine when you're using "rifled" slugs. The slugs don't actually spin from contact with the barrel, but the voids caused by the "rifling" will allow the slug to squish down and slide through a choke.
Is there anyway you could do a video over shooting slugs out of your smoothbore and borrow a shotgun with a rifled barrel and see which of the two is more accurate?
I've been looking for a double barrel hammer fire stagecoach shotgun similar to the one he was holding in the beginning of the video. Does anyone know where to get one or what they are more commonly known as?
hickok, i just turned 21 and im looking into a gun for home defense and im really struggling between the remington 870 and the mossberg 500 or 590 can you or anyone else reading this post help me out? i need opinions and reasons why i should choose one gun or the other! HELP!
If there any difference in most great shotguns compared to a wilson combat shotgun? where do you get your extenders for your stocks? also what is that shell loader on the back of your benelli 90? as usual thanks for your advice and help!
Love the shotgun vid! You questioned why anyone would put a rifled barrel on a shotgun. In Southern Ontario, if you want to hunt with firearms you're pretty much restricted to either muzzle loader or shotgun, and if you're after deer you have to use slugs, so you may as well have a dedicated slug gun with a rifled barrel. The reasoning was public safety; the powers that be figured shotguns are short range weapons. Of course; a rifled slug gun is good for 150+ yds. Sigh.:)
@DaveBro1996, It's called "Topping off." It's one of the advantages to this type of firearm. Great design. Some firearms are difficult to load more ammo into until the gun is empty, such as the GArand.
@DaveBro1996 the elevator wont move up allowing you to load it until the gun is "cocked" and bolt forward. if the bolt is closed and you pull the trigger the elevator will still stay locked down. Even the manual recomends loading the barrel first and the mag tube second. Watch some 3 gun competition they always load on a full chamber. Running your gun dry is no bueno.
The 870, as illustrated in this video, is quite a reliable, venerable weapon indeed, and those 1 oz. slugs really smacked that gong hard! I also noticed the wads from the 7 1/2 field loads flying downrange. You simply can't go wrong with an 870. Nice shooting!
Classic quality shooting considering the wind and weather conditions. I think shooting at distance with heavy shadows and wind is harder than people may give it credit. Ghost Ring sights are fast and good to focus the eye rapidly. Even a shotgun has to be aimed and have trigger control to shoot well so hitting the gong shows the training over the years kicking in for these conditions. The key to speed is range work with safety first which is why I like these videos so much.
I just use my rifled barrel for deer hunting, also, i picked up my mossberg 500a at a gun show and thats the barrel it had, if it didn't come with one i wouldn't have bought it either. Im from Ohio so we have to use a shotgun with slugs only to deer hunt. I think the rifled barrel just gives us a .73 caliber rifle haha. I use my 28in smooth barrel for turkey, upland game, and waterfoul hunting, clays, or whatever.
Also, on the point of pumps being capable of firing almost as fast as semi-auto's... ITS TRUE!! I use the much forgotten or looked over Winchester 1300 'Defender'(think they discontinued and now is being made again, but in Turkey under the FN/Winchester name, got mine when they still said "Made in New Haven, Connecticut', with 'Winchester PROOF steel'!!), with it's "Speedpump', is THE FASTEST PUMP IVE EVER SHOT!!! Any chance we could see you hammering one of those sweet puppies? I HOPE!!
If you like semi-auto, UBER RELIABLE(in MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE!) shotguns that will fire most anything from bird all the way to 3" slugs, you might look at the Mossberg 930 SPX. They had problems early on, but the one I got is a DREAM, might be worth a look. Especially with your longer LOP needs, it's pretty well set-up from factory, LPA ghost rings on a pic rail(removable rear). Its nice, if you come across one, you might like it? But vs. your M1 Super 90, MAN that would be a GREAT VID!
Great videos as usual, 1st shotgun vid I've seen from u. I've got a Mossberg 590 and love shootin slugs w/it. I also have a Glock 23 & 45. I know u love ur Glocks.
rifled shotguns are good for hunting in states that dont permit the use of rifles like in NJ, and recently they made 20 guage slugs that can go out to 200 yards and take a deer, so in NJ they are a great tool
I'm looking at a semiauto shotgun to go with my 870, the Benelli M4 is pretty high up on my list, have you had any experience with that model?
A plus it has is that the telescoping stock is standard here in europe and I don't want it at all, yet in america they seem to be gold, so I think I know how to recoup a big part of the guns price there ;)
interesting you like the rear sight on a shotgun, ive tried them before and i cant say im a fan, the single bead on the front is the only way to go if you ask me, if you ever try skeet shooting with a ghost ring you'll see why haha
Just a word on the rifled shotgun barrels; If you live in an area like mine and like to hunt, rifles cant be used in many hunting zones. Therefore they make rifled barrels for shotguns so you can get rifle-like accuracy with sabot slugs out of a shotgun and still comply with state regs
hey i havnt been able to look through all of your videos but you wouldnt happen to have a Remington model 17, would ya? Back from the 1920-30s. Just curious to what you think about em if you got one.
hickok45, You surely have convinced me to get the Glock 23 as my first handgun. I love that gun, Ive been having it since March of this year. I need your advice though on my 2nd weapon of choice. I'm debating between getting the Remington 870 or the Mossberg 590. What would be the best choice for home defense, or maybe just as a first shotgun? I'm most likely going to get it within the next couple of weeks.
@qporche Hey just a thought, Mossberg makes a gun Maverick 88. Great 1st shotgun, dependable and really cheap. also the stocks can be changed out to a grip for home defense.
I luv Remington shotguns my granpha buy one many years like 45 years ago and whit that shotgun we learn to use shotguns is awesome brand and in those years never never changue a piece just whit the maintence is awesome
I've owned a modified 870 for 20 years, and it's been very reliable. I recently bought a Mossberg 590 A1, 6 shot, with the three dot rifle sights. I prefer the top tang safety over the cross bolt, and the sights are hard to beat. I also have a 930 Tactical that I bought on a whim. It'll throw lead in a big hurry, but the pump would still be my first choice in bear country.
I'm Canadian, and our gun laws are kind of odd... is it legal to get the pistol grip military style on the super 90? or even the 870? in the states i mean
Somebody was trying to pick the lock on my front door two days ago I went to the door and racked my 870 needless to say they took off like a bat out of hell. Nothing compares to the 870 when dealing with burglars I hear it does ok with zombies too.
Imagine driving up to this guys house to pick his daughter up for a date ! Racing stripes I'd put in his driveway would match the ones in my draws. ha ha ha ha....
can anyone tell me if you are supposed to have any kind of choke in your shotgun while shooting slugs or does it natter? thanks

AANate007 1 year ago
interesting you like the rear sight on a shotgun, ive tried them before and i cant say im a fan, the single bead on the front is the only way to go if you ask me, if you ever try skeet shooting with a ghost ring you'll see why haha
deadtofall666 1 year ago
@deadtofall666, ghost ring is great for a defensive shotgun. I wouldn't use it for shooting clays. :-)

Just a word on the rifled shotgun barrels; If you live in an area like mine and like to hunt, rifles cant be used in many hunting zones. Therefore they make rifled barrels for shotguns so you can get rifle-like accuracy with sabot slugs out of a shotgun and still comply with state regs

hickok45, You surely have convinced me to get the Glock 23 as my first handgun. I love that gun, Ive been having it since March of this year. I need your advice though on my 2nd weapon of choice. I'm debating between getting the Remington 870 or the Mossberg 590. What would be the best choice for home defense, or maybe just as a first shotgun? I'm most likely going to get it within the next couple of weeks.
qporche 1 year ago
@qporche Hey just a thought, Mossberg makes a gun Maverick 88. Great 1st shotgun, dependable and really cheap. also the stocks can be changed out to a grip for home defense.

You have an 870 thats all you need.
870Remington12 1 year ago
I've owned a modified 870 for 20 years, and it's been very reliable. I recently bought a Mossberg 590 A1, 6 shot, with the three dot rifle sights. I prefer the top tang safety over the cross bolt, and the sights are hard to beat. I also have a 930 Tactical that I bought on a whim. It'll throw lead in a big hurry, but the pump would still be my first choice in bear country.

ididnt hear in the opening, but are you using 2 3/4" or 3" shells? was noticing the recoil as you shot.

this is a very good video, totally made me fall back in love with the idea of a shotgun, instead of a revolver for my first buy.

Somebody was trying to pick the lock on my front door two days ago I went to the door and racked my 870 needless to say they took off like a bat out of hell. Nothing compares to the 870 when dealing with burglars I hear it does ok with zombies too.
