@TheArtfulShow It's not 'cheating' in any way, but most painters, including me, feel that your end result is much more exciting and expressive if you aren't confined to filling in the gaps. You're really good, but I would suggest you lay down a base layer first (maybe ocre) and then work on top of that, using paint to sketch rather than pencil. I promise after practice this will result in you experimenting a lot more with the colour etc that you use.
