@GyroscopeApps - I assume so. There's an app for the iPhone that tells you what the stars are in the sky above you by just holding the phone out at arms length as if you were comparing a picture to the sky. As you turn the picture changes to keep up with the sky.

It could be useful if someone is describing which way you should go especially if you're inside a building to begin with. You could plot the route in advance an to do a walkthrough. Its a visual compass so I guess if you're following the image you're following the right path. If the compass and the maps could combine.... oh wait, thatd be GPS.

That compass thing really isn't that great. Enkin already did this and more, they could have soon hooked that up to Street View. Maybe that's why we saw no mention of Enkin in the runners up thing for the Android cash stash, Google already had something underway.

The built-in electronic compass is very important for portable GPS features, the main problem so far with portable GPS navigation systems was that the maps never were pointing in the right direction. With the electronic compass you can get accurate "Turn right", "Turn left" instructions even while walking. Also if you use the camera, everyone could update the streetview information. Add a distance measurer, and it would send 3D information from users to Google Earth.

the compass stuff may have multiple application. the obvious one that google wanted to push in this demo I guess is the overlay of information on the street view. things like "this is a restaurant", this is a bus stop, bus is at that time, you friend was there 2 hours ago etc... stupid examples but it's the idea.

it's a compass mode... the phone screen orientation ... move as you move the phone.. that's what you call 3D ... you are not controlling 3D with a button anymore.. you control the dimensions by moving the object around .. JUST LIKE ..REAL LIFE... lol ..
