The older combat men removed or damaged the helmet decals as they made a good target for a sniper. Haven't seen Saving Private Ryan. I saw what I saw in Korea, and in the Legion many of our men were from the 11th. Nordland Div.,and knew of HJ kids of 14-16 being shot after surrender. The US (Time/Life I think) film before and after still exists. There were no angels in war, but now - Iraq, Libya and soon Iran - it is plain murder. You at least are on the safe end!!
Wow, that's cool. Living in America, it is impossible for me to do searches like that. That is some truly incredible stuff you find, I hope to have the chance to do it myself someday.
I see. And which archaeology do you study? I studied Prehistorian Archaeology (as it is called here in Berlin) and Near Eastern Archaeology. Quite nice both fields. Any special interests you have?
dude that job should be done by an archeologist, just digging like that besides being dangerous, for example you dig an HE shell, valuable information is lost just by looting...
@Lasarus89 I AM an archaeologist... 3 years experience, including a 10 week WW1 project in Ypres, you should have seen the ammo we encountered there. If I don't dig up this stuff, it will rot away. I have recovered more information then anyone else has done, I even returned a messkit to a living WW2 veteran in New York and he told me how he lost it. No archaeological dig can get that information! I will put up a video with all the research and work done so far. I am not a looter!
@HPBrowningBoy wait you realy did that? thats good man, dont know anyone who would do that, and i bed the guy was happy to have it back. probly brought back memories of cold dinner with his team. and now his kids have anoner thing to remind them of there dad
@UBIincorporated It was the original, you can see it in my other video 'Overrun on the hill'. Although it was only the top lid he was very happy to receive it back. Strange thing was that it ended up 2 miles away from where he left it.
War is awfu,l no matter what way you look at it. WWII was extremely frightening, words alone will never come close to justify how disturbing it was. For me though, which I can not explain. I find WWII unbelievably interesting. There Will never be a Generation of mankind as remarkable as those who fought in WWII.
HP, I understand your feelings about your digs. Me being a past offender of the PM message to you, I feel I have to say, it sucks living in the US. It is very difficult to obtain things like this. I can appreciate the great amount of history in these items. I wish I could live in an area with items I am interested in buried under my feet.
@vetitoe362 No problem, I can understand that and I forgive you. You got that right on the bullet hole being a ventilation hole so you know your stuff ;-).
@vetitoe362 Again correct, it was not a double decal though. It seems the party emblem has been removed. I do not have my finds on display as I do not possess the room to display them or the time to stay with them. I am however considering an exhibition in the village where most of the items were found itself somewhere the coming year but I have to discuss that first with the locals.
@9754568 Yes we did but I should not upload to much about this site. There were some other diggers poking around in this village trying to find out where I was digging.
OK. How do all these relics wind up buried 1 to 2 feet down. Somebody had to put them there. As an old soldier myself, I had to have a very good reason to dig a hole anywhere or anytime. Anybody have a clue that I can believe??
@leesherman100 We were tipped about this field by local civilians that lived in the village during the war. They were probably stashed away by locals, easiest way to get rid of them. Also, shell craters were often used for this purpose. An average mortar crater is no deeper than 2 feet. Foxholes were often much deeper but the fields have been leveled after the war.
Great work man. You have no idea how much I appreciate relic hunters who share their findings and have the decency to ask for permission from the authorities and land owners. Keep it up!
One of the best vids, i ever saw ...
