CHILLS!........I'm talking "Hair standing on the back of your neck" chills. The more I hit the replay on this......the more chills I get. The mighty Temptations......greatest Male R&B vocal group in the history of musical entertainment.......WITHOUT DEBATE. May the spirits of Melvin Franklin & Ali-Ollie Woodson, my 2 personal all-time favorite Temptations, rest in God's eternal embrace.
Outside of the "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" line-up of Temptations........this was probably my 2nd favorite collection of Tempts, simply because it contained my 2 personal favorite Temptations of all-time; Melvin Franklin & Ali-Ollie Woodson. I've admired the Tempts since the days of "My Girl"........and this version of the "National Anthem" doesn't surprise me at all. they've been blowing peoples minds for over 50 YEARS.......and they're STILL DOING IT!
If there is anyone out there in YouTube-Land who gets absolute CHILLS checking out the harmonies on this video (as I do), can you possibly imagine what it would have been like to have been part of the audience? I'll say it again: This was the most ENJOYABLE version of the National Anthem I've ever witnessed.......period. That's simply my personal opinion......but somehow, I feel there may be others who share my thoughts.
If Christina Aguilera thinks singing the national anthem is so difficult, she should try it harmonizing her voice with 4 others the way the Temptations did.
I'm sorry folks, I may be a little biased because I've been a Tempts' fan since "My Girl" in the 60's..........but when it comes to performances of the National Anthem......does it really get any better than this??? Vocal harmonies from another Planet! May almighty God embrace the spirts of Melvin Franklin & Ali-Ollie Woodson, two of the most talented vocalists who ever picked up a microphone. I cherish their memory.
Words dont come close to describe the wonderful feeling when you hear that harmony only the tempts could do the way they do the things they do. I may be mistaken but i do believe this was one of Ali first television appearance with the tempts
Totally awesome, I reflect back to that time and I remember thinking that those guys would be together forever. At least Melvin, Otis, and Richard, at that time the longest tenured Temps
Melvin BLU Franklin is a legend and is missed dearly. What a performance specially when they break off into harmony...masterpiece...Loving the bass...right up there with geaorge younce and tim riley...from new zealand with love
My all-time "Superheroes" of the recorded & performing arts! I've been blessed to have been on this Earth for 52 years, and I swear, it SEEMS like I've been digging the Temptations for at least 50 of them! This performance was simply another outstanding exibition of their harmonizing, vocal talents. Melvin Franklin was, quite simply, INCOMPARABLE!
I really enjoyed this, and by the looks on many of the player's faces, so did they. Usually the players are just looking around and spitting, anxiously waiting to start the game. Fantastic, thank you!.
possibly...they did a few tv spots around that same time though...that would be neat if this was the first one. A nice introduction into the group to do this before any really big gigs i guess. I'm so glad this got posted.
I absolutely love Melvin Franklins big booming Basso Profondo voice! It gives me shivers and rattles my speakers every time I listen to him. R.I.P. my Bass Brother.

Just thinking, this had to be in Feb of 1984. Could this have been Ollie's first public appearance with the group?
