like the videos.........great info, and demonstration. Not that it matters, but I am just wondering what brand style of table is that you are playing on. Looks like a Brunswick........very similar to the one I want to buy.
I agree on both counts ... the pockets are huge, and "English" is ridiculous. I prefer "sidespin," but the term "English" is standard in most American pool publications.
@emarum To point out the pockets are large and that certain terminology is illogical. Does reading come hard to your entire family, or it it just you ?
First, let's assume you're using a cue with a tip that can apply English. The shot certainly can't be made without English. Let's also assume the table is level. I non-level table (with "roll off") could help or hurt with this shot.
Now, the amount of "action" you get off a rail will vary some from one table to the next, and this depends a lot on the cloth properties and the amount of humidity. However, this shot is possible on most tables I've tried it on, including lots of bar tables.
very nice i try to explain this to my fellow pool league teammates, i try to tell them that some bank shots can only be made with the proper throw and spin transfer
The amount of ball throw and spin transfer also depends on ball conditions, and the amount of "turn" off the rail depends on both ball, cloth, and cushion conditions.
dr.dave iv been playing pool for awhile now won a couple of class d and c tournaments back home in the Philippines. over there most of the descent pool players learn by watching and playing other good pool players, learning new techniques and and polishing our game along the way.
and i never believed in learning techniques and improving ones game from a textbook or an instructional vid.. until i read your article on throwing balls... i swear i felt like a beginner again.. well explained and incredible knowledge of the game.. thnx
Regardless of the exact size of the balls, everything in the video is still valid.
Even though I don't think this is important, I measured the balls with precision calipers anyway. Here are the results: Aramith measles ball: 2.250 inches Elephant black-stripe ball: 2.249 inches Elephant red-half ball: 2.253 inches
How and why do you think these minor size differences could effect the shot? Do you think I can even come close to spotting the balls with this accuracy?
Great vid Dr. Dave. I use throw and spin transfer in my game all the time when I'm playing with my friends. Getting used to techniques like this has helped my game immensely. Keep it up.
dr dave you are a beast. that was incredible, i didnt know you could transfer so much spin for that! next time for practice do you think you could tell us suggestions for setting up the balls on the table?
I have a couple of questions for you, Dr Dave: 1) When you aim your tip at 1/2 right English (9:00), do you use back-hand English to elimiate deflection (squirt) or do you aim your whole cue to 9 o'clock? 2) Is this clip mentioned anywhere in your book? Is it quite fasinating indeed.
My March '07 instructional article (on my website) discusses this shot in detail.
I do adjust my aim to compensate for squirt and swerve. BHE compensates only for squirt. See my recent series of articles (on my website) concerning squirt and swerve for more info.
I'm glad you learned something. If you want to learn even more about this stuff, see the March '07 instructional article on my pool website, which features the shot.
Dr. Dave, have you thought about going pro...??

No. That takes a lot of natural talent, a lot of dedicated time, and no other job, commitments, or responsibilities.

You could park a car in those pockets.
Calling left/right side "English" sounds ridiculous.

The cue ball that you used for this shot is smaller than the other balls ... which makes it easier and 99.9% chance of making it
