Mate this is absolutely incredible bass slapping skills, I wish you'd come to sydney....do you have a band?? can't stop listening to all your clips, such a positive vibe comes through this music.
God Bless the Great Louis Johnson, you do him alot of justice.
Hey there, love following your vids! I have a question for you: I have a 1979 Music Man Sabre and I have always gotten these nasty pops that sound like clipping when I slap using the neck pickup or both the neck and bridge. Is there anyway to get a clean slap sound using the neck pickup, or are you mostly using the bridge? Thanks!
as a teenager in the early 80s i fell in love with funk and all the popular black groups of the time.damn it why didnt i pick up the bass.love watching you its the closes ill ever get to see the real deal.
Truly amazing... But how in the world can you memorize all the notes of a 10 minute solo... The first thing of course is to KNOW what is being played. How much time do you need to determine all the notes and then what will it take to play the whole thang to perfection like here! MIND-BOGGLING!
@WonderBOnTheOne Hi there, thank you so much for the wonderful comment and questions. However, playing Louis his solo can't be done perfectly, only by Louis himself. His hands, soul, skills, heart and groove is so typical Louis. Noone can copy that but some do come close. My version took about an hour or 4 to get down. The solo can be chopped in pieces and then I take it from there. If you listen carefully you can hear the I am not playing the same thing. I simply can't :-). But thanx! Peace
@funkstar650 I have this band (In the making) of a guitarist, drummer, and 3 keyboardists (including myself) The drummer also song writes and produces music; he had this idea of doing a solo album for me aside from the band work and we already have some ideas down. Im thinking of the solo album to be a mix of original songs and a couple covers. (e.g. Kool and The Gang, Brothers Johnson, The Jacksons/J5, Stevie Wonder)
@funkstar650 My friend, the drummer, knows a bassist, but he isnt much of a slapper and is more used to rock/metal oriented bass playing styles (he's more into pick and overdrive than thumb and autowah, if you know what I mean) And we dont really know anyone that truely 'feels' the funk.
But even if you do decide to help us out, we wont really start until next summer (This museum in my city is building a recording studio in it for the public/people who volunteer)
I am a longtime LJ fan, and that was great. Check out my video... "Get on the floor" (my first) let me know what you think. By the way?, where in the world did you get that concert playback? Excellent!
Simply brilliant... I hope this vid (and your talents) get you steady work, you are an incredibly gifted musician who has obviously worked very diligently to hone his craft. Good luck and keep on jammin'
to radcam69,I can always tell a REAL amateur when I hear one, because they make comments like yours! I bet YOU weren't even born when the original version of this song came out. You're a rookie bassplayer, and I know that because real bassplayers don't attempt to insult each other, they encourage each other!
This video makes me all happy! Not only is it great to listen to fun to watch, but you look like you're having a blast playing along as well. I love 8:05! it's like you nailed it, you know you nailed it, now you're making love to it.
this video is indcredible :) I always show this clip to friends of mine when we discuss on great bass work :) I love the sound of it, I regret that the original version of "get the funk outta my face" is slower and more laid back because it would be fucking dancefloor killer!
p.s. that little "pow" @ 0:11 always make me smile :D
@Manyek Thank you so much for the wonderful comment. However, I still think all credits should go to Louis Johnson who I just try to honor with this clip. He really is the man...
Thanks for the response,i was just suggesting that with the way that you're (and you're doing a great job) it would have been a little better if some one could follow you during your example.
@sosmooth7 huh?? so fast? This is a LIVE version of the Brothers Johnson concert in Amsterdam in 1980. This was the speed they played this song with. Much faster than the original I know but I cant help that! 'Blame' Louis for that. LOL.
@clever072004 You were? Great! Pleased to meet you. Hope you had a great time in Amsterdam back in the days. This concert was broadcasted live on the radio on a show called 'The Soulshow' by a famous Dutch DJ caled Ferry Maat. Since it was broadcasted live half of Holland started their tape recorders :-). I still treasure that tape and got it digitized a few months ago. Been an inspiration ever since I recorded it. So thanx for being a major influence in my life.
Awesome playing bro. Not only was that fast it was 10min!! Oh and the moustashe and the facial expresions indeed made it EXTRA funky!! Bravo....peace:)
I've just picked my bass up again after 2 years of not plying and I am so crap now. it's unbelieveable. Trying to elarn all the skills again but maybe the Brothers Johnson isn't the place tos tart. I'm pretty much learning from the start again. :(
@omnipitantlyoriginal Hey there, well that's how it works. You gotta build up from scratch. Take your time and you'll get there. Most important thing is to keep on groovin'. Notes and speed come later.
Thumbs up! You did a hell of a job MAN! Well, you know Louis thumbed untill he was bleeding at this solo! It was broadcasted alive on Dutch radio: "Ferry Maat's Soul show" back in 1980. We recorded it and played it multiple times and we can still sing this solo untill this very day!
Yeah some serious funkin round there. Funkface included ;) You really should create some own songs cos you´re just too funky dude. Would love to hear you playin on an album!

hey funkstar,, love all your stuff,, i think the closes player i saw to l. johnson was andre berry when he took louis place in the brothers johnson when they were in dc,, hes a great bassist
me and my dad were wondering if you could do a tutorial for "twinkle" Earl Klugh, LJ is playing bass for that, just a thought...i know you're busy and are probaly swamped with requests but.......;)
Hi thank you for requesting Twinkle! It's a classic. Fortunately I already did Twinkle a long time ago and you can check it on my YouTube page. It's amongst my uploaded vids.
Hope you like it. All the best and a happy Holiday season.
Dude! You are by far the best Louis Johnson enthusiast on Youtube. Do you have the 1978 Hanover MD. Concert? It is all the LJ you can handle. Where did you get this concert and where can I find it?
Your mustache, is it taken from a 70's porno? Great bass playing anyway!

me and my dad were wondering if you could do a tutorial for "twinkle" Earl Klugh, LJ is playing bass for that, just a thought...i know you're busy and are probaly swamped with requests but.......;)

Hi thank you for requesting Twinkle! It's a classic. Fortunately I already did Twinkle a long time ago and you can check it on my YouTube page. It's amongst my uploaded vids.
Hope you like it. All the best and a happy Holiday season.
Peace

Dude! You are by far the best Louis Johnson enthusiast on Youtube. Do you have the 1978 Hanover MD. Concert? It is all the LJ you can handle. Where did you get this concert and where can I find it?
