The only problem is that this requires you to destroy blocks to place portals, and you can't just destroy blocks unless they're within a certain range.

This would also rip a hole in the fabric of time and space, and also, placing the second portal under the table would not work, as the portal on the table would vaporize instantly, closing the other portal so that nothing would happen.
