Michael hedges also got the idea of playing with hammer-ons by another person, he developed it a lot. He has said that it was an idea he heard from a singer / songwriter who used a lot of hammers in his guitar playing. So, in the end, we humans are product of what we experience. Stop bickering about who is better or who started what. All things have always been progressed through generations of people. It starts from ideas and imagination, i get he's awsome. But he also learned from others.
@NexTube100 He's right. That man could have made a cigar box guitar sound amazing... a good player takes a $30 guitar and gives you magic. A poor player can have a $5000 Martin in his hands and still sound lame.
I first heard this song on 89.7FM WKSU (Kent State University, Ohio) 14-15 years ago and to this day no other guitarist has moved me more with one song than Michael with Aerial Boundaries. A few years back WKSU played this on 9/11 as tribute during a special broadcast. "nuff said...

Michael changed my guitar playing through inspiration of seeing and hearing things in a new way. Iam disapointed I never saw him perform but his music lives on in each one of us forever! Thank you Michael for every passionate alternate magical note!
saw him 2 weeks before he died, and he was glowing with joy and wellbeing. i think he may have had a 'good death' - spiritual people will understand what i mean by that...
3:53 to 4:18 in that specific part of the song I lose myself in the music no matter how many times I listen to brother hedges. Love his music. Never fails.
Here's something to try: 1. Listen to and become influenced by Michael Hedges. 2. Twist those strings into strange tunings and incorporate techniques you learned from him into your playing. 3. Come out on the other end WITHOUT sounding like a mini-Hedges. It's not easy! And are there any non-guitarists watching this right now? How about non-musicians?
I asked an old guitar palyer if he had ever heard of Andy Mckee, I told him he taps on the acoustic....The old man said he would check out theis andy Mckee and told me to listen to Mike here. Wow, this is better than Andy....srry andy
@Liton777 Agreed,I don't think he really ever died; nor do I think he lived here, either - that old soul transcended long ago, but he stopped in anyway to check on the rest of us
@ikeman1156 the number shows witch octave the string is tuned, for example the Low E string is tuned down to C2 while the the A string is tuned up to C3. its an octave between them. hope it helps ^^
Listen to what the man can do with a guitar... I had no idea a guitar could even make these sounds. What an incredible guy, I can feel so much in every song of his... and his voice, so dynamic and full... what a terrible lost the world was struck with when Michael passed. Rest In Peace Michael, his soul shall live on, we hear it every time we listen to his music.
@EpiphoneSG95 absolute genious. Guitar composer. This music brings to me some indian spirit. :) I see Mohawks dancing around fire. About the sound - guitar tunning, type of wood and Michael's brilliant technique and dynamics.
@Rikk303 Yeah. Whats hard about getting into Hedges music is his string muting techniques. Hedges was strict about this and would cancel out certain notes in his compositions. Its worth it to master the string muting technique by following his transcriptions because it will sound so much better. It does take alot longer to learn the whole piece though but it's worth it.
@MrFaulconbridge Never learnt a piece note for note and doubt I ever will. Always feel that as well as just playing the notes, you have to be the person that imagined them up in the 1st place. Not for me. I know what you mean about muting though, palmed or dull-fretted....really adds something to a solo acoustic. They mute trumpets don't they?! Now and again, by luck or design, you can get some fantastic harmonics as well as Michael demonstrates so well
He is not a guitarist? What a fallacy! He is both, instrumentalist and composer. The two things are so inextricably linked that's the guitar as if it were himself. This music is evidently the more clear that I have heard.
@MrFaulconbridge idiot... no sry but religion is for idiots, but any way. just enjoiy the music. music has nothing to do with religion except christian music or what ever.
@MrFaulconbridge i don't like to get into these sort of arguments, but it's a little bit of both... so long as a person has a good moral standard (code) and uses whatever they have for constructive uses, then they're all good. a person can be as christian as they like, but if they don't have that code, then being christian is rather pointless. let people follow their own path, because only negative thoughts go to the church if their followers only preach about hell to those who don't comply.
@MrFaulconbridge true, but i don't like it when people try to force or drag me into something that i'm not comfortyable doing, and neither do lots of others.
Michael Hedges is the greatest acoustic guitarist. There are many follwer of him even in Japan, however, the biggest difference is the composition. Michael Hedges compose with nature, air, guiatr, vibration and inner spirit if himself. wow.
I think anything good is going to happen an it should quite without having to copy anyone but yet as Phil Keaggy explained we cannot help being influence by others but in the end hopefully we have an original sound. Hedges was a completely new find for me a few years ago and by then I'd been going off the rails in my own private world. He is such an inspiration and I guess will always be someone we enjoy because he really, really knew and enjoyed what he did. What more?
Trying to argue who's "the best, most innovative, talented guitarist" is like trying to squeeze cheese out of fried pork. We are all a result of that which came before. Welcome to the Universe.
right on. It's amazing the power of the media, the filth(entertainment) that our children(and adults) are force fed these days makes it embarrassing to be american, aside from every other horrifying crap this government is doing to us. This is reality, and music like Hedges is a true breath of fresh air...
@Spartank43x actually, half naked prostitutes and drugs are regular. on the other hand, that guy's guitar solo is too much conservative and cultural insensitive.
Someone here is arguing that John Butler is a better guitarist than Michael Hedges. The fact is that Hedges created (along with Bensusan) the style of acoustic guitar playing that John Butler, Andy Mckee and Don Ross played later. Those artists will all tell you that Hedges was the inspiration for their playing, in the sense of the direction they went in.
@Polyfusia The sad thing is, that all this instrumental guitar music to most people is considered elevator music. I guess it only really appeals to musicians/guitarists. New Age music at its finest though.
@MrFaulconbridge I don't see how anyone could see it as elevator music, but I've played it before and had people ask me "when does the chorus start?". They want that pop verse-chorus-verse format. I personally don't consider Hedges to be New Age. He only has that classification because he was on Windham Hill records, which was primarily a New Age label.
@Polyfusia What do people think when you play this piece to them? I am currently working on it and want it to sound as close to Hedges as possible. I see what you mean about the pop verse-chorus-verse format.
Hedges is my favourite musician and my primary influence in guitar.
Some people happen to dislike CandyRat because they are "hedges wannabes". They talk how their compositions will never tell magical stories like Hedges did. I think they can use fancy techniques (slapping) way too much.
To those of you arguing whether Hedges or Butler are the most innovative/accomplished/whatever acoustic guitarist of all time: Andreas Segovia says "hi." And Django Reinhardt is laughing somewhere.
@Whizpig pretty sure by acknowledging that I think he's good I gave him respect. Not saying hes not talented, because he definitely is, but if you were to listen to a lot of JBT's stuff John Butler is the more talented individual. Not to mention he plays slide guitar and banjo as well. Just because he invented the style doesn't make him better. Are the people who invented baseball better than the players of today? I don't think so.
@HPTRadio Listen, how many objective sources can you find that holds John Butler as the greatest acoustic guitarist of all time? Hedges on the other hand will be at the top, or close to it, on most lists.
I'm not even a big fan of Hedges, and I really like a lot of Butler's stuff (Ocean ftw), but he's got nothing on Hedges, especially in terms of innovation. You might subjectively prefer Butler, but he's not even a remotely important guitarist in the grand scheme of things.
I watch Butler play and i pick it up pretty quickly, to me Hedges's style is surreal, and harder to duplicate, he's the master and the best i've ever seen imho.
@melodic218 Yes. The ending passage is my fav part of the song and when I started learning this on my guitar I learned that part first lol. I play it with such emotion and the whole song takes me outta this world. It's a masterpiece. Anyone who plays complex fingerstyle guitar should add this to their song collection. It's the song that revolutionized acoustic guitar playing and shown what was possible with just one guitar.
I need to build up some tapping endurance for this song, but man is it worth it. I get so high when I play the ending (from 3:52). I'm trying to play it the way hedges holds the guitar but it keeps slipping out my lap. :(
What i love about Michael Hedges over other 'New Age Acoustic' players is that he never does something just to be fancy, everything is done in the way it's done because that way it sounds better. What an excellent song
My aunt as i was told, was best friends with him in college, she was the one that had to break it to his girlfriend when he died in his wreck, his work hopefully will be remembered forever.
It seems the true gifts are given to very few and so often they die young, perhaps they were sent here to show the rest of us what we can achieve given a full life and yet we tend to waste the years away...
I am sorry for asking, honestly. Why do you say he is a composer? In my opinion he has no sense of melody, it's only a finger exercise wet in crappy digital reverb. I must admit that takes a lot of work making the guitar sound as if they were two registers at once, I have heard the melody fully and I still don't get it. Maybe something is not as evident for me.
@stereodimension I wouldn't so much say that composing is all about art (though there is an art about it), but the idea here is that Michael has composed quite the beautiful piece of music. It invokes emotion, spurs the imagination; though it doesn't have so much structure or form as classical compositions (and there is value in form and structure when it comes to music), it still brings beauty to the mind when given a listen. And that is an element of music we cannot forget.
holy true .. and God example to aliens what is music and theory of strings ,vibration, energy, peace and love.. :) michael is a Angel...... respectaaa :) peace
@AaronJTodd, You don't have to learn musical theory to be a musician. TONS of musicians; including myself never bothered with it. I'm self taught on four different instruments. If you love what you do, you can learn anything.
@GuitarHeroPhenomSux I agree... I self taugh myself to play guitar and bass, recently i've been taking theory, its not really necesary, but its useful for communicating to other players about the key, and for writing down your musical ideas on sheet music.
@GuitarHeroPhenomSux I don't think Liton777 meant the sheet music/tabs itself, but more like talking about chord progressions, key/key changes, time signatures, etc. with others knowledgeable of music theory. Also how those things affect the composition and understanding why things "sound good".
@AaronJTodd Oh my god you couldn't be more right!! He is the perfect balance between technique and intelligence, and spirit. A musician who doesn't understand theory is, in my opinion, not living up to their potential. A lesson not easily learned.

I need to build up some tapping endurance for this song, but man is it worth it. I get so high when I play the ending (from 3:52). I'm trying to play it the way hedges holds the guitar but it keeps slipping out my lap. :(

I must have favorited this video at least 4 times on this account alone just to ensure it's definitely favorited! And I'm going to do it again.

What i love about Michael Hedges over other 'New Age Acoustic' players is that he never does something just to be fancy, everything is done in the way it's done because that way it sounds better. What an excellent song

If you like Michael Hedges, come check out my new tune 'Emerald Hedges' which is inspired by and dedicated to the man himself.
I try to use similar techniques which Michael is renowned for while still keeping my own style.
Come check it out!

He isn't a guitarist. He's a composer.
LucaPette 1 year ago 15
@LucaPette
Hello.
Maybe something is not as evident for me.
stereodimension 9 months ago
@stereodimension I wouldn't so much say that composing is all about art (though there is an art about it), but the idea here is that Michael has composed quite the beautiful piece of music. It invokes emotion, spurs the imagination; though it doesn't have so much structure or form as classical compositions (and there is value in form and structure when it comes to music), it still brings beauty to the mind when given a listen. And that is an element of music we cannot forget.
SureAndSteadfast 9 months ago
Actually, i made the guitar for him.

Personally, I'm a classical music man myself, but, wow, what a masterful piece of music this is. Hedges is a superb artist.

This proves to me that all the guitar players who won't learn music theory, are only hurting themselves and those they play for and around
AaronJTodd 1 year ago
@AaronJTodd Go say that to Tommy Emmanuel's face, you pedantic shit.
delomalonicon 1 year ago
@AaronJTodd, You don't have to learn musical theory to be a musician. TONS of musicians; including myself never bothered with it. I'm self taught on four different instruments. If you love what you do, you can learn anything.
GuitarHeroPhenomSux 1 year ago
@GuitarHeroPhenomSux I agree... I self taugh myself to play guitar and bass, recently i've been taking theory, its not really necesary, but its useful for communicating to other players about the key, and for writing down your musical ideas on sheet music.
Liton777 1 year ago
@Liton777, I write stuff I come up with, using tabs..
GuitarHeroPhenomSux 1 year ago
@GuitarHeroPhenomSux I don't think Liton777 meant the sheet music/tabs itself, but more like talking about chord progressions, key/key changes, time signatures, etc. with others knowledgeable of music theory. Also how those things affect the composition and understanding why things "sound good".
jkshoujk 1 year ago
this is surely goooood music. to bad i'm the only russian to leave a comment here.
once again thinking about throwing my guitar away after watchaing this video
denikoboroda 9 months ago
@AaronJTodd Oh my god you couldn't be more right!! He is the perfect balance between technique and intelligence, and spirit. A musician who doesn't understand theory is, in my opinion, not living up to their potential. A lesson not easily learned.
