He really lacked an identity in the 80s. This video is an artist trying to adapt to the times and looking a bit clumsy. This is a far-cry from the hip young rock star sneering at all the clueless Mr. Joneses. This is Bob Dylan as Mr. Jones. He wrote some classics in the 80s, but he did not belong. Despite the cheesy production here, this is actually a pretty good tune, and I hope you are all fortunate enough to have heard his acoustic version of this live at the Supper Club in '93.
This will never be called a "classic" but it is my favorite Dylan song that I can listen over and over and never get tired of listening to. It brings so many positive emotions for me... great song.
"I never could learn to drink that blood and call it wine, I never could learn to hold you love, and call you mine." Such a classic lyric, which is obviously about his Christianity period.
I've always thought this was underrated. Favorite line: "But I can't figure out whether I'm too good for you or you're too good for me." I understand the sentiment, brother.
that quote " what looks large from a distance..."etc I just used to encourage my daughter about starting college dylans so damn cool aint he.. says things you remenber all your life
The more I think about it, the more often I see it, I must say: It's just plain perfect. You have to consider that this was back in the 80s, and Bob made an effort to get in tune with the time, and he did an excellent job at that. It's timeless, and there's not many 80s video you can say that about. Bob, you're the man!
It jumps around a lot. They never can get a Dylan song down in a video. The song always exceeds the pictures; maybe the people compete with the song. That's a losing battle right there.
come on, it's a togh job, and they did quite well, considering the difficulty. I quite like it. And as long as nobody comes up with a better idea..I go for it.
This is other-worldly. So 80's, video-wise and musically, yet the utter Bob-ness of it all makes it so timeless. Look at the man! SIMULTANEOULSY staggering through this mess like a washed-up wino AND floating high above it all in sheer moral superiority (don't get up gentlemen, I'm only passing through...)
Even though the 80's were not, creatively, Bob Dylan's best period, songs like this are great additions to the Bob Dylan catalogue. And one has to remember that this song was good enough for the ultimate imitators, The Rolling Stones, to steal the lyrical hook from for their song "Anybody Seen My Baby" -- add in the melody from K.D. Lang's "Constant Craving", and the Stones had another hit! Then again, the Stones never had an original thought, anyway. Follow trends, steal from others. F*** 'em!
This is perhaps one the worst Dylan tunes I've ever heard, but one of the quickest I've ever favorited.. lol. I can't wait to listen to it again tomorrow. Bob you're my favorite.
AHAHAHAHAHAAHAH where do i begin? how much do i love bob dylan and his don johnson attire, and that random fuzzy blue ball? how weird is it to see him all romantic with a woman? Got to love this. He must have been stuck in Osaka with time to kill.
The Miami Vice costumes, the awful acting, the 'Lost in Translation' moments with Japanese cops. It's so 80s and can you imagine being Dylan in the 80s? One of America's truest artists in one of the most creatively and political vacuous and dull decades ever? New wave and Duran Duran? Poor Bob. Luckily hes back better than ever and Duran Duran are 5 fat Brits youd walk past in a pub and not notice.
IMO its about a bloke splitting with his wife over an affair...then when it gets to the bit about the hot blooded singer n' the guy gettin' a beating "Well then im as lost as you2
It makes me smile when I see spanish speakers on here. Okay, that sounds ignorant, but you know what i mean? It's just great to know that certain people unite the whole world. Brilliant. Peace to far off lands!
Bob Dylan is my favourite artist, but I hadn't seen this video yet. Wow, it's so... from the 80's... I think this was the worst decade for him (musically), specially if you've albums such as "Desire", "Blood on the Tracks", etc, in the 70's and "World gone wrong", "Love and Theft", "time out of mind"... in the 90's.
Still, Bob is Bob. And it has the same number of letters as God.

Probably the worst video ever made. Pure 80s schmaltz. Bob like a block of wood supported by every out-of-work actor who didn't get into Hills Street Blues. And three Chinese cops. As grim as it gets.
I was one of those who just didn't get what this guy was about until someone turned me on to the Hurricane record. This record when it came out in about 85 was a really big deal. I think this was his last piece of great writing...
I disagree. I think Bob belongs in every single music video. That would be awesome. If nothing else, it gives us an indication of what Adam Sandler will look like when he's older.
This video does suffer from that mid-80's penchant for having people mouth dialogue to sync up with lyrics, and for rolling sports jacket sleeves up to the elbow.
Thinking this is his music response to Joan Baez's
"Diamonds and Rust" way back when. She def wrote that song about him when he married "SARA" and left her behind. She moved on and wrote that song to let him know.
