  • He really lacked an identity in the 80s. This video is an artist trying to adapt to the times and looking a bit clumsy. This is a far-cry from the hip young rock star sneering at all the clueless Mr. Joneses. This is Bob Dylan as Mr. Jones. He wrote some classics in the 80s, but he did not belong. Despite the cheesy production here, this is actually a pretty good tune, and I hope you are all fortunate enough to have heard his acoustic version of this live at the Supper Club in '93.

  • This will never be called a "classic" but it is my favorite Dylan song that I can listen over and over and never get tired of listening to. It brings so many positive emotions for me... great song.

  • "I never could learn to drink that blood and call it wine, I never could learn to hold you love, and call you mine." Such a classic lyric, which is obviously about his Christianity period.

  • One of the finest.

  • Bob has somehow been timeless with every decade he's never been out of the limelight.

    He's a May 24th Taurus/Gemini can't go wrong, flighty but grounded.

  • ?What looks large from a distance close up aint never that big."

  • this tune , jokerman ,and changing of gaurd my fav bob tunesz!

  • Amen.

  • Fuck me bobby's a cool cool man!!

  • I've always thought this was underrated. Favorite line: "But I can't figure out whether I'm too good for you or you're too good for me." I understand the sentiment, brother.

  • that quote " what looks large from a distance..."etc I just used to encourage my daughter about starting college dylans so damn cool aint he.. says things you remenber all your life

  • The more I think about it, the more often I see it, I must say: It's just plain perfect. You have to consider that this was back in the 80s, and Bob made an effort to get in tune with the time, and he did an excellent job at that. It's timeless, and there's not many 80s video you can say that about. Bob, you're the man!

  • 2:50 HOW CAN SHE SLAP?

  • Haha, her bag says "Fiction Girl"

  • fuzzy blue ball period. Like Picasso only fuzzy and round????

  • yeah its a bit too literal in the images

  • This is the Dire Straits version of Lost in Translation.

  • ...except that the Park Hyatt doesn't figure in it

  • It jumps around a lot. They never can get a Dylan song down in a video. The song always exceeds the pictures; maybe the people compete with the song. That's a losing battle right there.

  • come on, it's a togh job, and they did quite well, considering the difficulty. I quite like it. And as long as nobody comes up with a better idea..I go for it.

  • I have been addicted to Bob Dylan.

I wonder why he filmed it in Japan.

The magazine he was looking at is out of press.

  • I've been addicted to him as well. I love all of his music.

Is it just me or how totally awesome is it that it ends with him getting a bad ass threesome?

  • This song is just ... addictive.

"What looks large from a distance, close up, ain't never that big."

"I never could learn to drink that blood

    and call it wine."

"I never could learn to hold you, love,

    and call you mine."

    "Has anybody seen my love?"

  • Deleted scenes from The Wedding Singer?

  • Stick to music Bob, you're a lot better at it than actling.

  • drugs are bad, guys...

  • Great song back in the summer fo 85.

  • Awesome !!!

  • His baseball cap and leather jacket doesn't match. Kind of silly. However it does bring me back memories. Strange video.

  • I must take back my earlier comment. This video has since grown on me. I think it's very good.

  • directed by paul schrader

  • "Maybe Someday I'll Remember To Forget"--What a great line!

  • good song but bob doesnt look light he wants to be in this video!

  • this is bob dylan's 「Lost in translation」!!!

    very good & very funny....(^-^)

I feel nostalgic for Japanese scenery of 80's.

    倍賞さんも若くて綺麗ですね。。。

  • he is so stiff here

  • possibly the funkiest song ever, can't help but move your feet to this. similar to thunder on the mountain in that way

  • "Shockingly inappropriate" is the phrase that comes to mind. Bobby, Bobby, Bobby...

  • this is probably the best song dylan has done since like a rollin stone got it ,bill

  • Sounds to me like " someone got a hold of my heart" from the bootleg series

  • That step shuffle at 3.07 may be the man's greatest moment.

  • Y'all mean 5:07 instead....right?

  • This is other-worldly. So 80's, video-wise and musically, yet the utter Bob-ness of it all makes it so timeless. Look at the man! SIMULTANEOULSY staggering through this mess like a washed-up wino AND floating high above it all in sheer moral superiority (don't get up gentlemen, I'm only passing through...)

  • Kudos. That was poetic.

  • Even though the 80's were not, creatively, Bob Dylan's best period, songs like this are great additions to the Bob Dylan catalogue. And one has to remember that this song was good enough for the ultimate imitators, The Rolling Stones, to steal the lyrical hook from for their song "Anybody Seen My Baby" -- add in the melody from K.D. Lang's "Constant Craving", and the Stones had another hit! Then again, the Stones never had an original thought, anyway. Follow trends, steal from others. F*** 'em!

  • Bob Dylan is the man, this song brings back memories.

  • This is the WEIRDEST. The suit, the plot, the blue ball and Noiresqige stylization. A Bob cult classic favorite.

  • LoL... way to go Bob!

This is perhaps one the worst Dylan tunes I've ever heard, but one of the quickest I've ever favorited.. lol. I can't wait to listen to it again tomorrow. Bob you're my favorite.

  • AHAHAHAHAHAAHAH where do i begin? how much do i love bob dylan and his don johnson attire, and that random fuzzy blue ball? how weird is it to see him all romantic with a woman? (yet i wish it was me) this reminds me of those great 80's bowie vids i love so much. kudos on the dancing at the end too bobby! he's such a PIMP ; p

  • he so is a pimp in this video, haha!

  • thanks for your analysis : you're right

  • As Al Pacino says in Serpico, 'If you love the garden, you gotta love the man!'. You get the drift...

  • It's about Life

  • what is this song about?

  • IMO its about a bloke splitting with his wife over an affair...then when it gets to the bit about the hot blooded singer n' the guy gettin' a beating "Well then im as lost as you2

  • LOL bob doin the dance at 5:05 hahahah

  • I loved this song, I bought the 45..great sleeve..still have it, but my turntable doesn't work anymore..*sniff*

  • It makes me smile when I see spanish speakers on here. Okay, that sounds ignorant, but you know what i mean? It's just great to know that certain people unite the whole world. Brilliant. Peace to far off lands!

  • Bob Saved the 80's from musical disaster with great songs like this.and David Bowie.

  • Bob Dylan is my favourite artist, but I hadn't seen this video yet. Wow, it's so... from the 80's... I think this was the worst decade for him (musically), specially if you've albums such as "Desire", "Blood on the Tracks", etc, in the 70's and "World gone wrong", "Love and Theft", "time out of mind"... in the 90's.

Still, Bob is Bob. And it has the same number of letters as God.

  • Dylan wearing Don Johnson suits...lol

  • are you dense????

Did you just name Blood on the tracks as one of this WORST albums? 2 questions:

1)what grade of crack are you smokin'

    2)where can I get it?

  • re: rhiannoncat

Actually, Paul Schrader directed this around the same time he helmed "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters"

  • la la la, hope you didnt take some comfort there Bob.

Thanks for this kureha31. Soooooo coooooooool

  • to eastsidedickhead. your the wanker, hey did you get a pullitzer prize (not generally given to wankers) I know its hard when your so jealous and wish you had a quater of his looks charm and talent, but get over it, or go fuck off back to springstiens page.

  • this is one of my faves thank you so much, love it, a happy dylan song, great album, wonderful

  • I like "Someones got a Hold of My Heart" from the Bootleg CDs better.

  • Thank you very much for this! This is a rare video. Been waiting along time to see this again!

  • haha... 80's are funny

  • How could he go from Just like tom thumb's blues to this. The eighties took a toll on a lot of stars but at least Dylan got back from it.

  • guest appearance by bob geldof at 2:40. at least i think it's geldof, could be dylan's dad.

  • Dylan's dad passed away in the 70's.

  • what is he doing to that bed at 2:42 lol ?

  • i must be guilty of something you just whisper it into my ear

  • Almost as good as "Lost In Translation". Dylan and Bill Murray are equally confused guys :)

  • I think Scorsese directed this. I'm not sure.

  • jonathan demme directed this

  • Check out that blue ball of fur or something at 0:09 that rolls down the stairs for just a second. Ain´t that bizarre? Just like a bad movie.

The video is full of stuff like that. The white haired guy playing the harmonica and stomping along to the song at 2:41 is so unfitting...

  • welcome to the 80's ...LOL

  • I think it is Genius/Hillarious. Is so subtly funny that it seems serious, but I think it is a joke. Seems like the Director chose Dylan´s worse takes, and his acting is so bad that it´s good!

  • I think that blue puff is supposed to be the "powder blue wig" referred to later in the song.

  • this dylan guy has got some pretty good tunes ...blonde on blonde had some catchy tracks on it, but I'm more into his gospel stuff

  • Haha..."this Dylan guy."

    Love it.

  • what looks large from a distance/close up ain't never that big

  • Call me crazy, but I can never tell if Dylan's singing about a girl or Jesus

  • yeah Bob Dylan will always b a legend,Especially the group he was last with da Traveling Wilburys da song Tweeter and the Monkey man.A great song,She's my baby.

  • I like this song, not sure about the video..meh!

  • Is that Clydie King singing Memphis in June?

  • Fiction Girl Please call 362-1795 your the one that I've been looking for, your the one thats got the key!

  • I can't believe Dylan said yes to release this stupid video that has nothing to do with this great song.

  • I MUTHAFUCKIN" LOVE IT!!!!! Great song! Great video! Instant classic! An' I'm out!

  • Beautiful song.

  • Bob just likes to show a few obscure things in other cultures other than the one we've isolated ourselves to.

  • Drink that blood and call it wine/Hold you love, and call you mine... F'ing Fantastic!!

  • Has anybody see it yet?

I'm searching al over the place

  • mick taylor played on this lp.

  • madame butterfly she lulled me to sleep

  • in a town without pity where the water runs deep

  • no i just coulnd't with you around my neck!

  • i said i send for you and i did, what did you expect?

  • Yes.... and my hands are sweaty and we haven't even started yet!

  • I go along with the charade until I can think my way out

  • I know it was all a big joke... whatever it was all about you know ;)

  • Someday maybe I'll remember to forget

  • i'm goin to get my coat/i feel the breath of a storm

  • there's something I gotta do tonight/you go inside and stay warm

  • I was one of those who just didn't get what this guy was about until someone turned me on to the Hurricane record. This record when it came out in about 85 was a really big deal. I think this was his last piece of great writing...

  • anybody know the name of the actress in the plaid jacket?

  • lol hilarious, poor bobby just doesn't belong in music videos

  • I disagree. I think Bob belongs in every single music video. That would be awesome. If nothing else, it gives us an indication of what Adam Sandler will look like when he's older.

This video does suffer from that mid-80's penchant for having people mouth dialogue to sync up with lyrics, and for rolling sports jacket sleeves up to the elbow.

  • What's with Dylan's dance there at the very end?

  • Age-ing hipster back then (like me, only NOW :))

Thinking this is his music response to Joan Baez's

"Diamonds and Rust" way back when. She def wrote that song about him when he married "SARA" and left her behind. She moved on and wrote that song to let him know.

Now this came to me (years later) that this is his explanation as to what happened in the late 60s and 70s that broke them up - then reunited them for the Rolling Thunder Review.

    Shit, I'm old.

    JoC

  • 'Cause he has a Tight Connection to My Heart...

  • Has anybody seen my love??

  • Anybody know who the actresses are? One of them looks familiar from other 80s videos.

  • that's Jack Stamm on harmonnica; Jack mostly posed on harmonica but was a creative writer who lived & died in Tokyo; RIP. note Roppongi Pit Inn stage shots.

  • love it

  • A dreadful video from the 80s. Songwise: as good as it gets. Dylan never really translated to video. Thank Christ.

  • Dylan is an icon and a watershed in music. He doesn't have to translate into *anything*.

    Just saying.

  • great song great lyrics but what else could u say about bob dylan true classic !

  • love this song but doesnt bob look outta place...lol...I dont know! has anybody seen my love?

  • i love bob's videos, there so silly. this is probably the silliest, although Unbleivable is quite funny too. whats with the little thumb dance he does at the end.ha

  • It's the song not the video. Some times it's better to visualize in your mind instead of a staged act.

  • Hilarious! Completely tongue-in-cheek and I wish I had been in on the big hug...

  • Great song. Horrible video. I think this is Bob's first attempt at an MTV style video...and I think his last. Not including the Victoria's Secret ads...lol.

  • It's Hillarious; no facial expression on Dylan's face. But that's just the way I love him.

Not my favorite video although I gotta have it. But Excelent song !

  • Quanto amo questa canzone ... Pure Feeling !

  • you want to talk to me go ahead and talk

  • Amazing:)

  • Directed by Paul Schrader!

  • I think the best thing of this video is bob's dance at the very end.

  • Definitely! The guy is so great ...

  • Pour toi Ouardia!lol C'est ta chanson!Bisous

  • this video is pure comedy
