Nadez, the doctor who said you cannot have AS because you are a woman was an idiot. Many women are now being diagnosed. However, AS is a disability. If it were not you would not need a diagnosis. The majority of the world is NT. It is you who have to fit in and try to get along. That.s just the plain facts. Good luck to you.

I have no patience with people who diagnose themselves. Unless an expert has diagnosed a person they DO NOT have Asperger's but only a few quirks like everybody else.

that's not actually true...

I've never even heard about Asperger's until a few years ago and recognised myself totally. But I had a right struggle to even get a doctor's referral for dx because he said I'm a woman and "can't have it". I now have an official dx of Asperger's by the top speicialist in the field of Autism, but I was suicidal before I even got to see him. It's very hard for an adult to get a diagnosis of AS because there is no funding to provide the support we're entitled to after.

It is extremely unfair to blame parents of aspies for their problems. I have wide experience with aspies and most genuine aspies have problems which are not co-morbid but are part of Asprege's Syndrome. The majority do not do well without extra help. Goldmines or landmines might describe the two extreme ends of the spectrum. The majority sadly need lots of help and having people running around saying how great AS is just does a disservice to the many who need help.

I must agree and disagree. My AS is NOT a disability per se, but the way people treat me because of their own lack of understanding (and falsely attributing things to me that are not true, just because they apply their own reasoning to me that is different from mine) is MAKING MY LIFE HELL! I have many friends with Autism with whom I get on great and never have any problems. But it's the bitchiness in some Neurotypicals is what really rattles my cage and I get into trouble for speaking out.

Most aspies DO NOT have special talents and are barely able to get through school. The myth of the brilliant aspie needs to stop as it prevents the majority from getting services because everybody thinks they don't need it.

sorry as an aspie I disagree. The problem with underachievers who have aspergers lies in the fact of co morbid disorders and familial abuse. those who had poor upbringing or abuse and/or severe co morbid disorders are those who have delibilitations. Aspies are either Gold mines or land mines depending on parents and co morbid disorders

I sent to an aspie support group filled with aspies who are liviing land mines. All had horrific childhoods at home and were plagued with co morbid disorders. My psychiatrist said for me to stay away. No differnt than NTs who had similar back grounds. Their aspieness is the only thing that is saving them.

I enjoyed this immensely, but Proudguy is right about the 'male' slant of this- they seemed to have tried to make aspergers fit in with the theme but they are overgeneralising and you do get women with Aspergers

Living with an Aspie is a journey in itself. We share lots of smiles and lots of tears. It is frustrating and rewarding all at the same time. My son is the happiest person I know. He is also the smartest one I know. (He scored 137 on his IQ test) Our Aspie is a sweetheart most of the time; however he can also be a real ass! And that's what we love about him!

Forgive me I am new! To continue: As I began to research AS 3 ago and started to meet other Aspies, I began to realize how specific their behavior is. They are their own person, but the similarities are uncanny. The first book I read was surreal. It was like the author had been in our home watching our son's behavior.

Along with his school teacher we also spent hours filling out testing forms. All done under the guidance of a psychologist. It is indeed a neurobiological disorder. It is only because of awareness among mental health professionals that the diagnosis of AS has become more prevalent.

yeah bobble i think you are right

but on another way, for people who have suffered from this syndrome for years without knowing it, discovering it and giving it a name gives concrete solutions. and most of all you can meeting people like you! :)

Not to be harsh, honestly, but how do you distinquish a person with aspergers and just an asshole? Seriously, it seems like maybe its just another syndrom for people with behavior problems to hide behind. I myself behave poorly and have rage on occasion, but I am the one responsible for my own behavior. The diagnosis of this syndrome seems to be becoming a fashionable trend (sarcasim). Again, not to be unkind, but It seems like the pathology of nerdness.
