Mate, you want flexibility, not all that movement that you show. The angle is all wrong, the timber configuration is wrong, the height is wrong, and no offense you have never used a makiwara before.
@watz7316 Mate, i wanted something to toughen up my striking points, this does that. Everything on it does exactly what i want, plus i have been using a makiwara for many years, and no offense you have never used a makiwara before. See how easy it is to talk crap over the internet. thanks for watching.
@zombiekicker that's right, they just help to make sure you don't make an absolute fool of yourself by breaking your under-developed hands if you punch someone. Can get pretty embarrassing
@zombiekicker - true, but the makiwara is not intended to help you fight better outside of conditioning you to be able to hit harder, with better technique, and for longer. It is not intended to replace sparring/Kumite.
@zombiekicker A good old Sifu Lee quote from Enter the Dragon. Everybody knows that. However, I'm wondering if you use your skull or your father's skull to practice your strikes on. Or do you beat up every poor beggar on the street just to test your skills. When you do a power punch at a real enemy but then miss and smash your bare knuckles full force into a brick or steel wall then perhaps you'll understand the importance of this exercise.
tipsy700 you are absolutely correct!! My knuckles are iron conditioned. I can barely tap my leg without catching a charlie horse. The punches have to be straight as possible, without hesitation and with power. RULE 1 people make the mistake of striking the makiwara as hard as they can. Foolish!! Strike it slow and lightly until you perfect your form. Perfect your punching form first, then slowly speed up until you the knuckles begin to tenderize. TNT (tension ntil tender) is waht I teach.!
this makiwara is far to thick youll break your fuckin hand. definately not the way to start off!!!
you need a more flexible thiner plank of wood that will gradually condition your knuckles, build up the calcium level in your bones. the one in the video is just a quick way off getting arthiritis
Hey nice vid, thanks. But I have one question, how do you attach the rope where it wont come undone or slide down the wood ? Do you just tie it or what ? Thanks.
@Koryuhoka With this makiwara i just have it placed into a whole in the ground and it says up very well. it also gives a little so if you hit to hard it has some give.
Thanks a lot for the video, but I couldn't hear well the types of woods that could be used to make a makiwara. I know they have to be flexible and strong. Can you tell me a couple types that can be used?

@antoniomaceda Good Question. I'm sorry for the audio i am working on fixing future videos. As for the wood type. this one that i made i just used a plain ol' 2x4 board 8 feet tall. Traditionally they are made out of white oak i think. this is just meant to be quick and cheap.
or wrap a tree and put on 1 side a board for throwing stars and bo shurikens at it and you wont damage the tree just make sure you do it on a full grown tree
ya man my punching bag had a sandbag in it, one side had a sandbag with a light layer of stuffing between it and the leather, it was perfect, the only problem was, every time i punched it, it moved and i wanted it to stay still.
SO sorry for my stupid question...Do we really need to make makiwara by wood !? Because I want to use the robe on the high stone. Is it the same if we make it on wood !? My humble thanks.

@zombiekicker nope but it does hurt if you do it wrong. you should go try it, and if you do it and it doesn't hurt...hit harder.

you can use any pole, any tree as fixed stand........

You did not explain the most important thing which is - how to get it to stand solidly and stay up. What it's attached to and how it is attached!
