sorry, this isn't creep from radiohead, this is a mixture of trying to put some artistic unplaced vocals and elements of R'n B crying to a beautiful song that is made and sung on the point. so you cover this, don't do it like this, do it the right way. this is shit!!!!
His cover of Simple Mind's "Don't You Forget About Me" uses this lower range, even if it is sort of 80's pop. Love that lower range, but all the other too.
If you haven't already, please come by and check out my version of Creep by Radiohead on my channel. Don't forget to subscribe and rate the videos. Thank you so much!
@heyyninaa i know!! he used to be soooo cool. his pre-idol stuff was so much better. i still love him, i just preferred his older music to the over-produced crap coming from him now.
This is what David Cook's debut album should have sounded like! Not that pussy that American idol turned him into. American Idol turned him into a pop star. I like David Cook much better whne he was with Axium.
What is it about this voice, in all its incarnations, that is so intriguing, amazing, soothing, arousing, fascinating, deep. Unlike some much touted, technical voices, it goes straight to the core. Nothing false or pretentious or contrived. Rather real, speaks to the human experience. Crazy about it.
I've been listening to this live recording regularly for more than a year now, and I still can't believe it. Perfect performance on the part of the band? Not hardly. Perfect performance on the part of David Cook? not quite. AMAZING live performance by an amatuer band and a guy singing in a bar???? Yep -- totally stunning.
this was pretty good. for david at least. i really did not like the guitaring that much. but im obsessed with the song. radiohead is can write a helluva song.
His voice isn't different he just keeps evolving his music so there's something different. But this version is so much better than the original, sooooo much better! My friend doesn't even like him and I turned this song on and she didn't know it was him and the first words out of her mouth was why can't david cook sing like this this is really good! I told her and she got mad! Haters can even be lovers when it comes tio Mr. Cook!
This was probably when he was in/just got out of college. He used to do musical theater, as you can tell by the cleanness of his voice. I'm so glad his voice changed into mor of a rockish style. Great cover.
Bob Smiley, This song was recorded a few years back. David Cook just finished a 154 date concert tour for his current (original songs) album, but also did great covers of I Just Died in Your Arms, Man In The Box, Hot For Teacher, Shattered Dreams. Just search David Cook in youtube w/any of those titles, or Declaration Tour, Analog Heart or Axium (his old band). You might like what you hear.
Fantastic cover is right. I'm just never gonna get over the fact that David Cook was a 20-21(?) yr old nobody singing in a bar when this was recorded live -- a miracle that.
dude shut the fuck up ok its opinion, his version was good too, but also it wasn't live it was all recorded. and his was an unplugged version, this versions pretty epic and i prefer it.
ummm yeah there is, cuz you didn't say anythin about that being your opinion, you just stated it as though it was a fact. and if you don't have anything nice to say just dont comment and move on
If I don't have anything...nice..to...say... Christ are you 12? What the hell lol Be nice you say, oh the irony when you tell me to "shut the fuck up" lol
I'm sure no one else took my comment to heart, as it was just simply a statement. Who are you to tell me not to share my thoughts? Who's to say my comment isn't factual to me? Is it to be disagreed with depending on personal preference?
Sure. That's everyone's right. As it's my right to comment on whatever videos I see fit. Grow up
Honestly speaking, I dunno whether its just the band, but up until the she runs part, his vocals werent really great. Especially when you compare them to what he did at AI with billie Jean, Hello and Eleanor Rigby...
This was quite substandard as compared to those...I guess its safe to say hes grown as a vocalist a huge amount!
if u listen to the original.....toms vocals arent any better...its davids lower register and you probably havent heard them before. he was awesome then is awesome now and will continue to be. listen to songs like optimistic to a fault and tell me he hasnt always been a great vocalist.
Mmm, no, i Shouldve framed that better, I don't mean to say he's not brilliant...cause he is. And lets not even compare him to Yorke, Yorke, doesn't compare...at all.
All i mean to say is that, at AI cause of the vocal coaches or whatever he's grown a tremendous amount as a vocalist.
Individually, if you compare his works with each other he's far better on AI with his own renditions of songs like Billie jean where he's essentially applying the same style, but those songs come out better
The music industry such as it is, lets ordinary singers become stars and ignores great ones. AI is a singing competition that focuses on good vocals. It may be a cheesy show, but the final contestants usually have really good voices. Who knows if we would have discovered David without it.
Just gotta say, this is amazing! And thanks to whoever took these gorgeous photos at the time -- who knew, huh? Wordnerd08, can't thank you enough for your generosity in sharing these older pieces this way --
david cook's voice had changed since he joined idol. either way, he's a great artist. both stages of his music life are periods of greatness. i actually miss this kind of belting out of his. this has an influence of "pearl jam." his songs now are more commercial because he has famous co-writers. but this voice is uncommercial, raw, uncompromised. i hope he sings songs like these, maybe after his contract expires?
what a shitty drummer he cant keep a beat for his life. david is an amazing singer but this is not the david from american idol. this david is impersonating other singers instead of being himself. he would have never have won the show if he was like this. thank god he came to his senses he is so talented
its a cover song dude! He was ten x's more himself with his old band than he is with the american idol contract making him sing generic pop music with lyrics that have nothing to do with him personally like he was able to do with his old band.
I actually like this one more than Radiohead's original. But I still like the original. David Cook's voice goes better with it to me. But that's just my oppinion.
This version is good but there's no way its as good as the original, even the first 30 seconds are no comparison. The words of the song are supposed to be conveyed with a certain feeling, and DC doesn't convey the emotion of a hopeless creep who wants a special girl. Thom shows what the feeling of the words are supposed to sound like. Good cover but no comparison.
I never said that this was in any way better, I grew up listening to this song and when I heard David do it. I just sorta got a new feeling when I took a listen. Thom Yorke is a great artist, but I prefer David's version, which was a good tribute with a different twist.
WOWW!! You gotta be fucking kidding me, the original rendition by radiohead can never be duplicated. This is a well done cover but it doesnt even come close. You must realize that its not a technical song that requires great singing ability but the point is to convey the angst and misery which thus far only Thom Yorke has truly mastered.
Thom Yorke did an excellent job of sounding miserable, heartbroken, and pitiful. But I think David Cook also does a good job, his voice sounds sorrowful to me. I like his twist on the song.
I'm sorry...but that was unfuckinbelievable!!! I don't even think that interpretation of a rock classic can be considered a "cover". Taken that the original is really legendary, this rendering was a version that no one has ever thought it to be done...true talent!
david's got an amazing voice, but i dont really think that there's anyone out there that can successfully cover radiohead AND convey as much emotion and meaning as thom does.
Roll down the windows in your car. Put on your shades, blast this song so that the next state can hear it and sing "your so fucking special" at the stop light. That's the perfect way to enjoy this song--unbelievable. What an incredible voice!!!
I like this version alot better than Radiohead's. David really puts the listeners in the shoes of the bitter, socially alienated character who is almost stalking this girl.
well, i'm sorry for raining your parades but I like this David Cook more than the new david cook now, the way he sings when he was in Axium is more preferred by me, now he's alright but since I knew that his past was that, he should've just continued his old band.
I AGREE - I say this all the time. It is not hyperbole to say he sings things better than the originals... I mean I heard the Beatles (McCartney whom I love) singing Eleanor Rigby the other day and David's voice is SO MUCH MORE RESONANT and Beautiful, it just ain't funny!!! He puts masterpieces out there! I don't get his critics. They are just STOOPID or lacking in any musical sensitivity!!! He is AMAZING and his voice is unparalleled. Period.
This is why he won idol. Even back then he was taking slightly popish songs and ROCKING THEM OUT. This arrangement is awesome aside from the stupendous vocals. WOW!
Now if people will just realize that he is superior songwriter (especially when left to write for himself) as well, all would be right with the DC world.
you are right on, i love David Cook, from beginning to end, i jut bought his CD, but i'm with you on this one, i love this version, but lacks the desperation and hopelesness from original version.
no two singers can project hopelessness and desperation exactly the same way. DC starts softly (hopelessness) then his voice rises to a crescendo ( manic despair) as if ready to jump off a cliff. Radiohead's version has a milder crescendo which matches your desired critique of quiet desperation. I prefer David Cook's version because his high notes showcased his tremendously gorgeous voice.
A cover doesn't have to be sung exactly like the original. David put his own spin on this. It's kind of cocky and as he would say......has some "swagger."
But my point is that an artist doesn't have to precisely re-enact the same interpretation of a song that someone else did. David put his own spin on it. And I prefer this version. It's okay if you don't.

this guy has the sound and edge of Hootie and the blowfish. David do not cover a good song ever again. You will seem like better artist to fans dumb enough to listen to you.
awesome voice, awesome version, but totally missed the point of what he was singing, but great for fun, this song is a must to sing it if you can and David Cook can!
This song as I have recently discovered when I started to relisten to it, really, really shows off how versatile and beautiful his voice is. Just as does Music Of The Night.
The way he sings this is just so sensual. I won't even say what kind of experience I had with this song once just walking listening to it on my Mp3 player. OMG!
David really hits those high notes on this song.
I can't get enough it. Wow, wow, wow. He never ceases to wow me, his personality, his looks, his singing, etc.
I REALLY loved Dave since day one and I REALLY do love this version ('tis perhaps one of the best covers ;)) but I just REALLY LOVE Radiohead's Creep. xD
um, okay, yes, I can compare DC's version of Creep to Radiohead's. I had never listened to the Radiohead version. I just did. This version..is so much better. David sings the heck out of this song...and his voice, and interpretation make it something I can listen to over and over. The Radiohead version....meh.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
you cannot compair david cook to radiohead. radiohead is one of the greatest bands we have ever been exposed to. its like apples and oranges. radiohead is an established band maybe someday you will be able to compair the two but today radiohead is better by far, and you have to remember they actually WROTE the song. not david although he is very talented.
I love the way he sings this song..he sounds so sexy even with the cussing!!!! Everytime I hear him sing it just makes me whole day!! DAVID COOK ROCKS!!!!

this is why he won AI! he can do any song and change it up a bit, and make it sound just AMAZING<3 i love himmm(:
summmmmmmmer2008 3 years ago
I like this version alot better than Radiohead's. David really puts the listeners in the shoes of the bitter, socially alienated character who is almost stalking this girl.
thelyteiscoming 3 years ago 5
im not gonna say that this is bad, its good, but in a different way. But ofcourse radiohead's the best.

Sounds similar to creed in some ways.

well, i'm sorry for raining your parades but I like this David Cook more than the new david cook now, the way he sings when he was in Axium is more preferred by me, now he's alright but since I knew that his past was that, he should've just continued his old band.

There is not one song that David has covered that has not sounded better than the original! He is so fuckin awesome, its chilling!!!!!!!!!!!
plaisancepleasures 3 years ago 7
I AGREE - I say this all the time. It is not hyperbole to say he sings things better than the originals... I mean I heard the Beatles (McCartney whom I love) singing Eleanor Rigby the other day and David's voice is SO MUCH MORE RESONANT and Beautiful, it just ain't funny!!! He puts masterpieces out there! I don't get his critics. They are just STOOPID or lacking in any musical sensitivity!!! He is AMAZING and his voice is unparalleled. Period.
beckylink 3 years ago 2
This is why he won idol. Even back then he was taking slightly popish songs and ROCKING THEM OUT. This arrangement is awesome aside from the stupendous vocals. WOW!
Now if people will just realize that he is superior songwriter (especially when left to write for himself) as well, all would be right with the DC world.

This cover sounds way too...masculine and confident. The original had an aching loneliness and quiet sense of desperation which is missing here.
HacjienceYukona 3 years ago
you are right on, i love David Cook, from beginning to end, i jut bought his CD, but i'm with you on this one, i love this version, but lacks the desperation and hopelesness from original version.
sdlcharlie 3 years ago
no two singers can project hopelessness and desperation exactly the same way.

He is rather masculine and confident.
A cover doesn't have to be sung exactly like the original. David put his own spin on this. It's kind of cocky and as he would say......has some "swagger."
mermcc 3 years ago 8
Yes, that's precisely my point.
It doesn't suit the lyrics of the song. His delivery brings the mind the image of a jock, not the pathetic nerd the song is supposed to invoke.
HacjienceYukona 3 years ago
I got your point, taken.

4lx123 3 years ago
not radio head standard at all. this is really "poppy". and does have the raw ass pre chorus of the original that makes the song what it is

Hm ...
I REALLY loved Dave since day one and I REALLY do love this version ('tis perhaps one of the best covers ;)) but I just REALLY LOVE Radiohead's Creep. xD
dmgamboa 3 years ago 2
and just because someone writes a song doesn't mean they sing it better.
mermcc 3 years ago
um, okay, yes, I can compare DC's version of Creep to Radiohead's. I had never listened to the Radiohead version. I just did. This version..is so much better. David sings the heck out of this song...and his voice, and interpretation make it something I can listen to over and over. The Radiohead version....meh.

you cannot compair david cook to radiohead. radiohead is one of the greatest bands we have ever been exposed to. its like apples and oranges. radiohead is an established band maybe someday you will be able to compair the two but today radiohead is better by far, and you have to remember they actually WROTE the song. not david although he is very talented.
furlong1018 3 years ago
And i don't care what some people say but i think his versions of some songs surpassed the quality of the original artists.
belladonna1999 3 years ago 14
His music before AI was awesome. He created some great music with Axium. I can't see how he couldn't win.
