@Dimunic No, actually it is not a mosquito at all. There are many names for this insect. They are also called crane flies. Adult crane flies feed on nectar or they do not feed at all; once they become adults, most crane fly species exist as adults only to mate and die. They don't bite or sting. The larvas of these flies eat roots and damage crops.

@Ontus Ahh I know nothing about flies. lol. Only insects i know of a beetles, crickets, fireflies, butterflies, moths, roaches, mantids, millipedes and centipedes. Maybe spiders but not much. Just the basics. Iam more into herps, fish, beetles, mantids, rabbits, avians.

Notice how the toad leaves the stag beetle alone. XD Funny seeing the beetle crawl on the toad. Not only is it huge, but its jaws would hurt...especially on the inside.

@KingstonHerps Agreed. Fireflies contain high amounts of phospherous and other chemical, which are bad for the bone structure of any animal. Phosphorous pretty much eats away at the bones. Thats sorta why fire flies have a soft shell. lol

I love how toads basically track down and hunt something once they see it move. They hunker down, stalk and then OMNOMNOM.

Toads will eat anything that fits into thier jaws. But that does not mean that you should feed them anything. I do not advise feeding shelled insects (beetles, etc...) to your toad. The toad may not be able to fully digest the insect and could end up dead. But it is your toad...just my advice...

can anyone help mee i have 3 toads and i want to keep them for the winter and i use hamster shaveings for them and i feed them super worms, meal worms, and crikits and i give the semi cold spring water and i fish tank lite so some one tell me if thats alrite

You shouldn't keep toads on hamster shavings as these can contain chemicals which can get into their skins, which like all amphibians are very sensitive. There are lots of specialst materials that can be bought from pet shops that are more suitable. If you look on the web, you will be able to find lots more information on keeping toads.

I wouldn't feed those beetles to a frog or toad however; I've seen them literally chew their way out of a toad's stomach with those pinchers. It was horrible.
