  • i enjoyed this vid

  • I bet someone got Deaf :l

  • I'm going against the grain but I think 29's whistle is perfect!

  • 29 should go to the rio grande scenic

  • The 4960's whistle is perfect!

  • It's a gritty, loud, creaky, disgusting noise......but it's beautiful.

  • love both engines #4960s whistle is great but #29s is disguisting i think that i honest to god hate high pitched whistles

  • classic

  • beautiful machine...thanx for this video... for all the train lovers in the world

  • My 2 y o daughter loves this so much

  • @zoelikestea same here, 'bye bye toot toot bye bye'

  • ive been on that it was amasing

  • man my home never dies

  • @dc9fan The smoke smell like coal man!!!

  • Wow, I would LOVE to come over from down under and take a ride to the Grand Canyon!

  • Why Do I tear up when I hear steam trains,Can anyone tell me? I was born too late Do you love this or what?

  • @Jazzyhorn111 I do the same thing! The sound of a steam locomotive makes me so happy that I tear up to! Nice to know that I’m not alone on that.

  • my husband and I went up to the canyon in 09 and it seemed to take -f-o-r-e-ver! the other trains we had seen it seemed to go a lot faster.. but it was cool anyway.. I loved the whistle best. We live 3/4 of a mile from the interstate and the BIG TRUCKS have the train horns on them now.we know some truckers that blow at us when they go by...WOW! it takes 6 seconds to get here after they shoot that air and its the greatest thrill for us! thanks so much for posting this ...for all to enjoy!

  • European steam locomotives have whistles......American steam locomotives have WHISTLES !.

  • AWESOME VIDEO .THANKS FOR POSTING. PEACE ALWAYS .

  • What in the world did they smoke smell like

  • Magnificent! I gotta go there and ride that train! (oh and probably see the canyon too :-)

  • Ladies and Gentlemen, THIS is railroads as they should be... still under steam.

  • Very, very nice. Thumbs up !!!

  • Really cool. But I rekon the best steam train is the mallard train it holds the world record of 127 mph and it looks really nice.

  • @Gamer360Zone 126 actually!

  • Don't yu just lovem !!!

  • Nice shooting.

  • Trains are definitely interesting, but I never thought one could be *breathtaking*. The sound of that engine's whistle...on the one hand musical like a symphony orchestra playing some mystical chord, and on the other like the roar of some great beast. Definitely the highlight of tonight's Youtubing. Thanks for posting!

  • @moogyboy6 Breathtaking! That's steam, up close. Stand beside one of these beasts in a museum or a static display and it's like a mountain of iron. But get it under steam and the mountain moves!

  • Esos jinetes con sus cabalos al inicio del video, le dan un sabor al viejo oeste. Excelente video

  • nice shot. hopefully 29 will run again

  • I just love your video - great / Thanks !

  • love these engines, so much power. I have a HO scale model of that exact engine.

  • wow sind das tolle lok's

  • anyone else hear the echo?

  • A TRAIN! WOW

  • good video thanks to share with us.

  • i love all trains but steams trains are the best

  • I saw a similar engine like this in grand canyon village in 1994,brings back memories, what a babe!

  • Great Video! I like the two different wistle pitches.

  • AWESOME!!!

  • oh, my God but wonderful

  • Great video !

  • cool video i have seen a tripple header on here before too with these two steamers and 3751 together what a site

  • @gaycowboy31 That was #18 in the triple header with #4960 and #3751. This is #29 and #4960.

  • @TVRM610 thanks its been a long time since we did that trip i had just forgot I do remember rideing behind 3751 roundtrip to and from Los Angles to get here it was my first and only time I have riden behind 3751 we were there for the NRHS convention and than we left there and went down the Peavine line to somwhere in southern Arizona to a Jct and went on the shortline Arizona and California heading back where somewhere in California we got on th BNSF mainline back to LA

  • @gaycowboy31 There are rumours of a train in Switzerland (I think) that once ran a steam, diesel and electric triple header!

  • This is the best sound for a video If ever heard, steam trians are to me the greatest thing that travels on wheels. Also the best sound, and Im 58 years old

  • Toot Toot Chugga Chugga!

    Better than Thomas....

  • wow!

  • the GCRY knows how to run a doubleheader.

  • Nice hooter!

  • i'm gonna be going on the train on Dec.30th!

  • @dolaikhal I hear there is no more steam running now though its still a nice ride

  • awsome!!!!!

  • super!!!

  • That one was fast.

  • It made me smile to remember my childhood. thanks fot that video.

  • thanks a fot? lol

  • Awesome video! Amazing the power of steam to pull all that weight. The spine tingling song of the whistles and the steam engines at full song, wish I could see it for real that would be awesome! Yeah!!!!

  • steam trains still run

  • they were never ended. They stil use them

  • It's a real shame that steam operation ended in 2008, but the official website said that steam is returning on 9-19-09.

  • GCR is celebrating their 20th anniversary on the 19th and #4960 will be pulling the regular train to the Canyon for that day only. There is talk of future special runs, perhaps similar to those run over Labor Day weekend where she pulled 45 minute trips to mile post #4 and back.

  • @pgatonna #4960 is steaming againg, on a slightly more regular schedule

  • @tropicalfishswim Wish I could say that is so. It has run on special occasions and will run on this year's National Train day, but only 45 minute round trips. Although it received a brief extension, it is due for its FRA mandated boiler inspections and will not be running until the railroad completes any needed work.

  • @pgatonna The work will be completed, though. It is afact that steam will stick around. On a reduced scale yes, but still there.

  • it has returned! yay!

  • Delta, these in the film are oil fired. The only engine that GGRY owned that wasent oil was number 20. She is currently unoperational but luckly she is at a better railroad now and is awating restoration.

  • yea #20 was oil on grand canyon there is current status videos of her in almosa colorado sayen shes oil

  • Actualy, If you go to Alamosa and look(Unless they started workin on her before finishing 1744) her tender is still coal.

  • sorry she still runs on oil always has coal hard to get

  • @wippydobo321 ,

When I was there in 09, I looked at her tender, and there was no oil bunker, it still was made for coal. If the SLRG is going to convert her thats ok, I was just saying that she wasnet before.

  • definitely harder to run a double header with steam than with a diesel

  • I guess they have to work as a team to keep from tearing the couplers apart.

  • @jdgator95 Yeah - for starters you need a separate crew for each one, whereas with diesels and electrics the other locomotive(s) can be remotely controlled from the lead one.

  • OK since I'm pretty much a noob with steam trains like this, are these coal fired? I'm guessing here.

  • Perfect creation

  • Wonderful. Loved Williams and loved the Train. Want to go back there one day. Live in the UK so it's a bit of a journey.

  • Think that is a lot of smoke. You should see those Chinese QJs in Iowa. They can lay down a smokescreen that would make a destroyer proud! Too bad that we will not see steam on the Grand Canyon again.

  • er,what does that mean?????????????

  • that the stupid company Xanterra that owns the railroad has done it to other railroads before

  • i am from the uk so dont quite understand

  • farrellhunter: DUDE! EVERYONE SHOOTS LIKE THIS! GET OVER IT!

  • Does 4960 have a ATSF chime?

  • I am one of probably thousands of steam locomotive fans that wants to see steam running on the Grand Canyon Railway. I also want to see N & W #611 & #1218 running under their own power again!

  • Everytime I listen to this it brings a huge smile to my face!!!

  • Now the big corporation has bought this fine railway and shut down the steam and put an amtrak diesel in their place. It's really a shame. I hope there's enough public outcry that they'll bring these beasts back one day

  • the smoke that comes outta these beasts, are they really carbon dioxide?

  • not at all, what you see is not smoke, but actually excess steam. only about 5-10 percent of it is smoke, and that's only from the fire. The diesel they use today is in fact worse than the steam locomotives, both of them put together in fact.

  • That horn must have been LOUD!!!!

  • Steam locomotives don't have horns. They have whistles.

  • Wow! Nice show! When we rode the train back in 2002,...They had a classic Alco set with one of the steamers on the point!

I'd highly recomend taking the ride to the rim of the Grand Canyon with these fire breathing beasts anyday!

  • one whistle sounds like the q 5 chimer used on the 1522 for awhile and the other is probably an sp 6 chime.

  • whistle

  • i like the second whistle better. sounds more like the challenger which has a beautiful

  • That is a beautiful love the shot of the engines at around 1.45 and the fabulous sound of the whistle.

  • Beautiful! IDK if that was asked yet or not, but what whistles are they using? The deeper pitched one sounds alot better if you ask me

  • nice beasts, love steam

  • Beautiful!

  • AWESOME!!!! Love the noise!

  • I got to ride these monsters before they were put in storage. I love steam locomotives! Ive heard som many whistles i cant believe im not deaf yet

  • dont these trains run anymore and what is the situation in the usa regarding steam trains

  • This video is my 2 yrs old son´s favorite. I have to play it for him every day! He just loves the horses crossing the track!

  • Comment removed

  • Exalent shot, what power! woop woop :-)

  • P. S: For a brief clip of an equally haunting diesel horn, search Youtube for "Friesland WI Wig Wags". This video also features the classic wigwag crossing signals (now gone).

  • This video has the most haunting steam whistle talk I've ever heard on a railroad video. That doubleheader also accelerates like mad leaving the station! What a shame the GCRR has since gone diesel. Great video, thanks for posting.

  • I hate that I didn't get to see the engines in action before they were retired. Such a shame...

  • They need to get all the steam locos restored and running the rails so we can retire the diesel locos.

  • my grandson love all kinds of trains,he calles them dodos

  • The second one is less shrill and more lower pitched

  • mwahaha the ultimate whistle duel...

  • When can they return the steam engines to their home rails again?

  • Big,Loud,Dirty and Smelly......these are real trains people!

  • ???

  • @hungaryrulz they anre not smelly

  • I've riden on the Grand Canyon train 3 years ago accept the engine was dessle instead of steam, and it was great, we ridden in the club car which was the black coach car with a sliding windows. but this one look like pollar express

  • i love it muah.

  • Listen to those beauties sing :)

  • Yeah, they make music with those machines !

  • Beautiful....just beautiful!

  • Thsi video is a classic now, since #29 and #4960 are on display.

  • reminds me of my children age.

  • Nice!

  • Sooooooooooooooooooooooo Beutiful! I LOVE IT!!!

  • Them two were running like a thundering stampede, except they wern't chasing after you know who...

  • Great moment at 1:40 as the train passes the camera...

  • Great video and fantastic train !!!

  • oops I was wrong the name of the loco is tornado, and their going to build seven more brand new steam locos.

  • haha! your such a loser! in fact, keep posting these comments it funny as hell to here you try and come up with a decent comeback! HAHA!

  • You are an unpleasant specimen aren't you. If you don't like them don't watch them, and leave those of us who do like them to enjoy them without petty comments from killjoys like you.

  • I just love steam engines, lol did you know they built a brand new steam engine in the UK and put it into mainline service, I think its call the thunderstorm or something like that.

  • The Locomotive is called Tornado an A1 4.6.2 Pacific number 60163 you can see all the details on the web. Its quite a sight. There are a few more new builds coming along in the next few years as well as some old loco's in scrap yard condition which will be rebuilt and put back into service. They will never be allowed to rust away or be left to the tender mercies of a maniac scrap dealer.

  • Never scrap History! Scrap unkind human beings!

  • BEAUTIFUL MOVIE. CONGRATULATION.

  • LUSH sound!

  • hello, mr cockroach2008, when you're an old fart, let's scrap you as well!

  • cockroach you are very dump railways built this country so why destroy a part of the railroad trust me if there was no railroad do you think we would live the same please think before you say your unwillingness to accept the 40 steam locos in existence is a sign of your IQ

  • with the 50 existing steam locos and the 20 operating ones you wont get much steal its best to leave them be they are part of our history and history is not for the books history is better in action its not like this is used for actualy freight pulling it is used for a few excurions around this country and future is not inhibited this gives young people a glimpse of the past therefore it serves purpose unlike you which is a waste of air and space scrap cockroach squish him like the pest he is

  • i want to see you approach the cpr empress and get arrested that will be great

  • im done with you you crazy freak you need to get locked up so you don't hurt yourself

  • Comment removed

  • Shut up already if you hate trains don't watch the videos you've already proven yourself crazy why go further

  • cockroach why would you want to do that? Wasteful..Gee you shouldnt be on your computer your burning electricity which is made from burning coal dumb fuck.

  • Your an idiot. I love trucks, cars, trains and motorcycles. These engines contain more history then melted steel. The amount of pollution that train make in one day is incomparable to the amount of pollution from electricity each day. Theres only about 2500 steam locos left of which maybe a thousand operate...This is nothing. Your just a fool and need something to complain about. There fun to ride and make a great tourism attraction.

  • Polluters..lol do you use electricty or a car? Do you work? Where did or do you work?

  • lol what the hell do you have againts steam engines. I mean i guess i can udnerstand if u enjoy cutting up things (which is still kinda odd) but what ever. hvac polutes too lol how dotn you think steam engines runnign is kool..even if hey got rid of em which they wont, it will still be diesel

  • im talking to that cockroach asshole and yes we should unite and crush this bastard

  • Comment removed

  • wcockroach you need a life. get a hobby

  • i dont know whats wrong with you. Maybe this is your job? You must be a democrat. You aint going to do anything by 'cutting" up a steam engine jackass. You better not drive or breathe...Ya know when ya breathe, you exhail co2. So dont breathe. Im done with you.

  • So sad the steam program has been dropped due to the fact it's too expensive to pay the employees in our bad ecconomy. I sure hope the steam engines find another great home.

  • ?????? The Grand Canyon RR isn't running 4960 anymore? I thought they just bought another mikado from somewhere up in Oregon, too.

  • there keeping the engines, just not operating them, i love this video

  • the ride is awsome I did it last summer

  • Great steam locos :)
