my husband and I went up to the canyon in 09 and it seemed to take -f-o-r-e-ver! the other trains we had seen it seemed to go a lot faster.. but it was cool anyway.. I loved the whistle best. We live 3/4 of a mile from the interstate and the BIG TRUCKS have the train horns on them now.we know some truckers that blow at us when they go by...WOW! it takes 6 seconds to get here after they shoot that air and its the greatest thrill for us! thanks so much for posting this ...for all to enjoy!
Trains are definitely interesting, but I never thought one could be *breathtaking*. The sound of that engine's whistle...on the one hand musical like a symphony orchestra playing some mystical chord, and on the other like the roar of some great beast. Definitely the highlight of tonight's Youtubing. Thanks for posting!
@moogyboy6 Breathtaking! That's steam, up close. Stand beside one of these beasts in a museum or a static display and it's like a mountain of iron. But get it under steam and the mountain moves!
@TVRM610 thanks its been a long time since we did that trip i had just forgot I do remember rideing behind 3751 roundtrip to and from Los Angles to get here it was my first and only time I have riden behind 3751 we were there for the NRHS convention and than we left there and went down the Peavine line to somwhere in southern Arizona to a Jct and went on the shortline Arizona and California heading back where somewhere in California we got on th BNSF mainline back to LA
This is the best sound for a video If ever heard, steam trians are to me the greatest thing that travels on wheels. Also the best sound, and Im 58 years old
Awesome video! Amazing the power of steam to pull all that weight. The spine tingling song of the whistles and the steam engines at full song, wish I could see it for real that would be awesome! Yeah!!!!
GCR is celebrating their 20th anniversary on the 19th and #4960 will be pulling the regular train to the Canyon for that day only. There is talk of future special runs, perhaps similar to those run over Labor Day weekend where she pulled 45 minute trips to mile post #4 and back.

@jdgator95 Yeah - for starters you need a separate crew for each one, whereas with diesels and electrics the other locomotive(s) can be remotely controlled from the lead one.
Think that is a lot of smoke. You should see those Chinese QJs in Iowa. They can lay down a smokescreen that would make a destroyer proud! Too bad that we will not see steam on the Grand Canyon again.
I am one of probably thousands of steam locomotive fans that wants to see steam running on the Grand Canyon Railway. I also want to see N & W #611 & #1218 running under their own power again!
Now the big corporation has bought this fine railway and shut down the steam and put an amtrak diesel in their place. It's really a shame. I hope there's enough public outcry that they'll bring these beasts back one day
not at all, what you see is not smoke, but actually excess steam. only about 5-10 percent of it is smoke, and that's only from the fire. The diesel they use today is in fact worse than the steam locomotives, both of them put together in fact.
P. S: For a brief clip of an equally haunting diesel horn, search Youtube for "Friesland WI Wig Wags". This video also features the classic wigwag crossing signals (now gone).
This video has the most haunting steam whistle talk I've ever heard on a railroad video. That doubleheader also accelerates like mad leaving the station! What a shame the GCRR has since gone diesel. Great video, thanks for posting.
I've riden on the Grand Canyon train 3 years ago accept the engine was dessle instead of steam, and it was great, we ridden in the club car which was the black coach car with a sliding windows. but this one look like pollar express
You are an unpleasant specimen aren't you. If you don't like them don't watch them, and leave those of us who do like them to enjoy them without petty comments from killjoys like you.
I just love steam engines, lol did you know they built a brand new steam engine in the UK and put it into mainline service, I think its call the thunderstorm or something like that.
The Locomotive is called Tornado an A1 4.6.2 Pacific number 60163 you can see all the details on the web. Its quite a sight. There are a few more new builds coming along in the next few years as well as some old loco's in scrap yard condition which will be rebuilt and put back into service. They will never be allowed to rust away or be left to the tender mercies of a maniac scrap dealer.
Very inefficient machines! They will not pay for their own existence if the ticktet prices were doubled!
The steam locomotives are ready for the scrappers torch!
Park them, part them, junk them, cut them, melt them!
I purchased a new set of coveralls, a heavy set of gloves, steel toed boots, goggles, hardhat, new set of oxygen-acytelene bottles, hoses, and a cutting head. I am ready to deliver the coup de gras! A real pleasure!
One day I will be scrapped. But let us start with scrapping out the steam locomotives now!
To polluting, inefficient and costly. I loved it when the steam program came to an end! I danced with joy and had a drink!
Now, I want to see them cut up for scrap iron. I vision the sight of blue flames cutting the equipment apart. Red rivulets of melting away from the cut as the machine is parted. The parts falling off and a front loader tearing the boiler off the carriage.
cockroach you are very dump railways built this country so why destroy a part of the railroad trust me if there was no railroad do you think we would live the same please think before you say your unwillingness to accept the 40 steam locos in existence is a sign of your IQ
History is for books! Iron is for useful products. This technology is so old, it has been replaced with more efficient machines. One day all of it will be replaced.
By perpetuating the maintenance of this old garbage, the future is inhibited.
Scrap all steam locomotives! Cut them down and melt the metal to make new, more efficient and useful machines.
Blue flames cutting them apart, steams of red iron pouring from the cuts, parts falling off, a front loader pushs the boiler off the carriage!
with the 50 existing steam locos and the 20 operating ones you wont get much steal its best to leave them be they are part of our history and history is not for the books history is better in action its not like this is used for actualy freight pulling it is used for a few excurions around this country and future is not inhibited this gives young people a glimpse of the past therefore it serves purpose unlike you which is a waste of air and space scrap cockroach squish him like the pest he is
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Cut them up! Scrap them! Melt them down! Send the metal to China or Japan!
They make very nice hybrid cars there. At least they don't perpetuate this old steam locomotive nonsense!
The metal would be better used to make new products. These old dinosaurs are wasteful and have long outlived their usefulness.
Blue flames and streams of red melted iron spraying to the ground cutting on these old things and junking them out for scrap delights my mind! Junk them out and cut them down! Today!
cockroach why would you want to do that? Wasteful..Gee you shouldnt be on your computer your burning electricity which is made from burning coal dumb fuck.
Your an idiot. I love trucks, cars, trains and motorcycles. These engines contain more history then melted steel. The amount of pollution that train make in one day is incomparable to the amount of pollution from electricity each day. Theres only about 2500 steam locos left of which maybe a thousand operate...This is nothing. Your just a fool and need something to complain about. There fun to ride and make a great tourism attraction.
You want to ride it, you better find a place because these old things are high cost to restore, operate, license and maintain! Many communities will not allow them!
I never support the restoration of this old pot metal. I have discouraged people from riding these. They are wasteful and gross polluters.
So it is time to deliver the coup de gras! Blue flames in 12 places on the body and streams of red berries and melted iron pouring off the cuts!
I live and work in Williams, Arizona. This railroad has a track which comes right into our wrecking yard. Much of my work is cutting up old cars and building sideing, HVAC ducting, but every once in a while we get an old railway car for cutting up.
We have been waiting for these old steam locomotives to come in. I have asked the boss, if I am still here, if I can deliver the coup de gras. He held an auction. I won! The driving linkage is mine!
lol what the hell do you have againts steam engines. I mean i guess i can udnerstand if u enjoy cutting up things (which is still kinda odd) but what ever. hvac polutes too lol how dotn you think steam engines runnign is kool..even if hey got rid of em which they wont, it will still be diesel
You don't know about the discussions they have been having about these. The problem is storing them and displaying them. They will never run again. They have money problems and scrapping it will go a long ways to solve it! They need cash badly!
I will enjoy cutting this old iron up for scrap! There is money to be made in scrap locomotive iron and I am going to get some of it!
Cut, grin, sing. laugh and dance! Junk iron, scrap metal!
Cutting up steam locomotives for scrap iron is my hobby! I enjoy cutting up all sorts of iron and steel for grins, fun and to help the environment with recycling efforts.
After all, it is the green thing to do!
Steam locomotives are actually a fun project! They have some many places to put my torch!
History belongs in books, not operating this old garbage!
A .50 caliber round into the boiler will put a leak in this thing so bad it will stop dead on the track!
i dont know whats wrong with you. Maybe this is your job? You must be a democrat. You aint going to do anything by 'cutting" up a steam engine jackass. You better not drive or breathe...Ya know when ya breathe, you exhail co2. So dont breathe. Im done with you.
So sad the steam program has been dropped due to the fact it's too expensive to pay the employees in our bad ecconomy. I sure hope the steam engines find another great home.
i enjoyed this vid

Blue flames cutting them apart, steams of red iron pouring from the cuts, parts falling off, a front loader pushs the boiler off the carriage!
Cockroach2008 3 years ago
with the 50 existing steam locos and the 20 operating ones you wont get much steal its best to leave them be they are part of our history and history is not for the books history is better in action its not like this is used for actualy freight pulling it is used for a few excurions around this country and future is not inhibited this gives young people a glimpse of the past therefore it serves purpose unlike you which is a waste of air and space scrap cockroach squish him like the pest he is

Today!
Cockroach2008 3 years ago
cockroach why would you want to do that? Wasteful..Gee you shouldnt be on your computer your burning electricity which is made from burning coal dumb fuck.

Why would I want to do that? Because these old things are junk iron and should have been in the blast furnaces 50 years ago!
These are gross polluters, noisey and pose a high fire risk.
At least the electricity I use for this computer is much more efficient than these old relics!
Park the steam locomotives, part them, junk them out, cut them down and melt them down!
The metal is worth more in scrap iron than this old thing! It would make some very nice White Freightliner trucks!
Cockroach2008 3 years ago
Your an idiot. I love trucks, cars, trains and motorcycles. These engines contain more history then melted steel. The amount of pollution that train make in one day is incomparable to the amount of pollution from electricity each day. Theres only about 2500 steam locos left of which maybe a thousand operate...This is nothing. Your just a fool and need something to complain about. There fun to ride and make a great tourism attraction.

Call me what you want!
JUNK THEM ALL!
Cockroach2008 3 years ago
Polluters..lol do you use electricty or a car? Do you work? Where did or do you work?

I live and work in Williams, Arizona. This railroad has a track which comes right into our wrecking yard. Much of my work is cutting up old cars and building sideing, HVAC ducting, but every once in a while we get an old railway car for cutting up.
We have been waiting for these old steam locomotives to come in. I have asked the boss, if I am still here, if I can deliver the coup de gras. He held an auction. I won! The driving linkage is mine!
Goodbye old steam locomotives, forever!
Cockroach2008 3 years ago
lol what the hell do you have againts steam engines. I mean i guess i can udnerstand if u enjoy cutting up things (which is still kinda odd) but what ever. hvac polutes too lol how dotn you think steam engines runnign is kool..even if hey got rid of em which they wont, it will still be diesel

They will get rid of them, sooner than you think!

Then JUNK it!
Cockroach2008 3 years ago
i dont know whats wrong with you.
