I've never seen Jason express so much emotion with anyone except when he was with Elizabeth. He's never expressed that much emotion with Sam, until he was angry at her for almost telling about Jake to lucky.

Sonny was a selfish jerk even back then. If memory serves correctly, he re-married Carly while Liz was kidnapped and Jason had been arrested. I'm surprise he didn't fly down to the 'island' to make his insensitivity complete.
