  • What is it about this song? Just love it. Reminds me of being young and all the dreams that died with it. xx

  • this drab and colourless fucking world. Ha!

  • The best use of a recorder anywhere in the history of pop music by virtue of the fact that is probably the only use of a recorder in the history of pop music!!? Correct me if I'm wrong

  • my fave jam song!

  • The first time a heard a Jam song (In The Crowd at about 3am on a DC underground radio station) I knew they were different and awesome. i only wish they'd have put out a few more albums but things happen the way the do for a reason and I'm glad to have beeen able to enjoy their music back then and now.

  • 0.52 looks a little bit like Dennis Waterman from Sweeney/Minder does Rick.lol.

  • Gorgeous song.

  • one of the bands most underated songs, but bloody brilliant

  • @1:35 is that photo from a film? if so what is it called?

  • @RayCrayon16

Hello mate - the film is "Quadrophenia", Watch it if you haven't!!

    Thanks for your comment.

  • exact same beat as ``Lindsay Buckinghams` trouble.Fascinating indeed!

  • Lyrics and music. A masterpiece.

  • wat a fucking tune, wat a band, their lyrics meant something, loved them, only the stone roses cum anywhere near them!!!!

  • @58busby58 true

  • What a fucking beautiful song. This song will always haunt me, genius. Inspiring stuff. Come on - let's fucking take the fucking call to arms and hold hands - and meet in the wasteland without feeling guilty - our lives might tumble and fall - but there's always that golden land of youth - which this album was all about - fucking hope, dreams, reality, where's the new Weller? Where's the old Weller? Where's the spirit? Meet me on the wasteland and tell me!

  • fuckin tune!

  • is it about abandoded city or what?

  • @jonnytheoasisfan it's about a dump, and the "monolith atrocities" are tower blocks.

  • Another gem, nice one xenoxiq. Love the recorder in this (I'm guessing the intro and other bit I'm thinking off was done with a recorder??). That's another thing about the Jam, never afraid to try summat you wouldn't have expected, often influenced by whatever Weller was listening to at the time or just sheer musical genius on his part . . . and that's before we get onto his ability to put unreal lyrics together. Got to give Thick as Thieves a mention at this point - what an absolute stormer!

  • thanks for this greetings from australia

  • This song makes me happy. <3

  • One of Weller's underrated songs. Great tune.

  • still know every word to every song. still means as much to me now as back then. top tunes are top tunes no matter how many years fly by us. keep it real and fuck x factor ect

  • Blessed relief... one of my faves as I get older xx

  • still out there :)

  • @c1modernist Aye - still around chief. Been disgustingly busy at work. Will make an effort to get on more asap ;) Thanks for the comment!

  • One of many many top tunes by THE band of my lifetime.....a band, a movement, a mod father , a fashion style and a library of songs that influenced a generation.

  • With the benefit of a great deal of hindsight... This could be the song where he 'most perfectly' captured England, and the lives therein. Melancholic, remote and still passionate for what is so obviously his landscape. The imagery lilts towards Philip Larkin's "Going going", and yet carries the refrain of an almost hopeful 'love song'. Or at the very least, a romantics' vision of one.

Thanks for this, there's a lot of photo's I've never seen before. And I bought Setting Sons on release!

  • Thanks for putting this up, made an old mod happy.

  • PW is just a genius. The greatest come back on baba O´riley, ever.

  • is foxton the best fuckin bass player ever or wot !!

  • itsd fuckijn berautiful ,best fuckj in band of all time

  • This song is one of my favorites. Watch the rain fall... It tumbles and falling... Like our lives... Exactly like our lives. I'm native Japanese and love the Jam in that time. New Wave Movement swept all over the world and I really felt it about 30 years ago. Thank you.

  • @suzumotojin The one thing that never ceases to amaze me is how far and how deeply the Jams'influence has been felt.

Thank you for your comment ;)

  • @xenoxiq I'm from Tennessee in the US, first heard The Jam in '95, and have loved them ever since.

  • @suzumotojin

those are wonderful lines, this is such a sweet song

  • I love this song it made me ask my mum what a monolith was and god bless her she knew straight off

  • Hehe - mum knows best ;p Cheers for the comment!

  • MOD MOD MOD RULES!

    PEACE NLOVE

  • ;p Cheers for the comment!

  • Did anyone get a cover of Setting Sons without the listings on the back? I did and used to play side 2 first for years before i realised!

  • Mine has a listing - might be worth checking to see if you have a misprint or factory defect. Could be worth a bit of cash!

    cheers for the comment!

  • @kiz66

Yes i did as well, with nothing on the back!! ha ha. I bought mine down queens crescent market near kentish town and i always played side 2 thinking it was side 1!! I had forgotten all about that!!

  • It was "All Mod Cons" that really got me hooked, but "Setting Suns" was more personal, you know?

I remember bouncing off of the walls to "Saturday's Kids" and as for "Private Hell". . . what a gem!

    Best to you (-:

  • Heheh - Saturday's kids still evokes images of council estates and teenagers now!

    All the best ;)

  • The cheap perfume, ahhhhhh (-:

    And then this:

"These are the real creatures that time has forgot,

Not given a thought - its the system -

Hate the system - what's the system?"

    Take care.

  • "Dip in silver paper when their pints go flat" - Anyone get that reference for 10 points?

  • ". . . a brave, but useless show of compassion

and that is forbidden in this drab and colourless world."

    Nice.

  • Emotive, eh? I always like the lyrics "missing the tranquility of solitude"

10 points for naming the song they come from!

  • What about this for perfectly capturing the feel of those days:

"And there amongst the shit - the dirty linen,

The holy Coca-Cola tins - the punctured footballs,

The ragged dolls - the rusting bicycles,

We'll sit and probably hold hands.

And watch the rain fall - watch it - watch it -

Tumble and fall - tumble and falling -

Like our lives - like our lives -

    Just like our lives."

Pure urban, no-nonsense, British poetry (-:

  • "That's Entertainment" (-:

  • 10 points ;p

  • @xenoxiq Thats entertainment

  • 10 points ;p

  • @xenoxiq That verse always caught my attention:

"Two lovers kissing amongst the scream of midnight

Two lovers missing the tranquillity of solitude"

    Much more appealing than

"Lights going out and a kick in the balls "

  • @xenoxiq A bit late, but anyway "That´s entertainment" for two lovers.

  • Jesus - I haven't heard this for almost 30 years. We had a tape of 'Setting Sons' in our freezing dorm at school - this is the song I'd fall asleep to - what a beautifully warm feeling it has.

The Jam were eclipsed at the time by Joy Division, Wire and the Fall (et al) as cooler, darker, less sell-out poppy bands and I'd forgotten such gems as this or "Thick as Thieves" and "Private Hell" which show Weller as a great songwriter. Love that flute bit.

  • Ah Private Hell - as true today as it was then ;)

Glad the song stirs memories for you mate. Thank you for the comment and have a great new year!

  • Sorry about the delay - but you have a great new year too!

  • I'm in the same boat 25+ years and now I know why I loved them so much back then. I remember seeing them live in Brighton in 1980: I was in heaven (despite all of the gob that was raining down on me from the upper seats).

  • Hehehe - fond memories ;p Thank you for sharing them! Take care.

  • The USA needs a punk movement NOW!!!

  • Something truly revolting like the Sex PIstols again ;p Something to really shake people up again!

    Cheers for commenting ;p

  • oh god good song

    the jam is the law!!

  • Glad you like it mate ') Thank you for your comment!

  • Oh, and thanks again for reminding me I am not alone in a world of watered down wimpified zombies who take pleasure in the mediocrity of life. God bless the Jam and all Jam fans!

  • You aren't alone, Brother. Far too much pc bullshit pandering to fuckheads.

Thank fuck they can't censor our ears - our last real freedom left ;) Cheers for the comment and you take care now!

  • My favourite album (ss) that's personal.

    Thank you.

I'm proud to say, I gave IN THE CITY to a 19-20 year old friend, completing her 1st term of a four year art school course Dec 31 of 2009.

She said to me before "Some people saywhy are you going to spend thetime and money to go to art school?"

  • The raw sound and power behind "In the city" never fails to impress me - a hungry sound if there ever was one!

Cheers for the comment, mate - be well.

  • @orweller3 I pressed the wrong one! wadda cunt!

    rock on Mod dude

    Peace n love everyone

  • Hehhe - easily done mate.

    KTF!

  • @orweller3

The human spirit MUST NOT be defeated. And it doesn't matter if we never meet again - this moment will always remain. Long live the Winstons and Julias of this world, wherever they meet. Mind you, I do prefer the water meadows rather than the wastelands.

  • @jules031056 Forgive the lateness of my reply - what an awesome comment! Thank you mate ;)

    Be well!

  • all u lot are so lucky im only 17 and my dad use to drum all these bands back then ive gotta grow up with all this waste of space who think there lyrically talented and inspire people when all they are is a load of shit. ill be listening to this and all them great sogs from the bands in the 80's for years to come. theres one band whos like the jam lyrically really good there called The Rifles im telling you if u like the jam ud love the Rifles buy both there 2 albums and it wont fail to impress!

  • Then fuck all this modern shit - listen to what gives you pleaseure, Brother!

I'll give those guys a listen ;) And thank you for commenting !

  • did u listen to them by any chance what u think?

  • Ive been listening to Setting Sons at least once every week for the last 30 years and still dont tire of it...without doubt the best album ever made!

  • It is certainly still in my top 10 albums of all time - always nice to see a fellow fan ;) Thank you for your comment!

  • Agree absolutely!

  • :) Thanks for the comment!

  • Oh my god...you are so phucking welcome....It's just so awesome to know you are not alone...to make a connection through this music....we are doing what weller and davies and townsend and lennon wanted and you are part of it as am I. Phuck apathy and phuck arrogance...praise the free spirit of MOD and rejoice in your dance of life!

  • Glad I am not alone....best lyrics ever written here...I mourn the younger kids who don't have a PW to help guide them through this "drab and colourless world." Lord knows how he helped me navigate through all the BS. God bless the Jam and the spirit that they imparted upon all those fortunate to hear their song.

  • Instead of the musicians we had - the role models of the music world today leave a lot to be desired.

    Tuneless, talentless, arrogant, manufactured bullshit.

Thank you for your comment mate!

  • PW's lyrical masterpiece

  • Weren't they all? ;)

    Thanks for your comment!

  • A great band.

  • No arguments there my friend ;) Thank you for commenting.

  • i wonder how much of a role this song played in morrisey and marr's blueprint for the smiths...

  • How so? What paralells are you drawing mate?

    Cheers for the comment ;)

  • That was a bit too sombre - so let me say thanks to xenoxiq for a nicely edited video and another Jam song that hits the right spot :)

  • Thank you for your other comment and you are more than welcome ;)

  • Watch the rainfall......

Like the whole of Setting Sons it reminds me of those guys who lost their lives in the D Day landings...

  • Agreed. Thank you for your comment.

  • My favourite Jam song lyrically.

  • Certainly one of my favourites - although "Thick as thieves" is the one that hits me hard - I lost a good friend while we were on active service together and the lyrics to that one still grab me.

    Thanks for the comment!

  • Sorry to hear about your mate, Thick as Thieves must hit home. Great song from a great album with loss - of innocence, youth, love & time - a major theme.

  • Agreed - "Setting sons" will always remain my firm favourite Jam album.

    Thanks for the comment mate!

  • remember buying this record - remember the farewell tour in Leeds many years ago - a true classic!! thanks for the memories

  • Thank you for commenting! - Did you go to any of the gigs on that tour, mate?

  • Thanks for posting this. : )

  • More than welcome ;) Thank you for the comment!

  • Its only when you dont hear a song for ages that you realise what a classic it is.Cheers mate.(One of the best films of all time as well!!!).

  • I've always hated doing the "top 5 tracks" stuff, but I'd have to put this in my top 5 Jam tracks ever. Glad you like it mate ;)

    Thanks for the comment.

  • Amongst the discarded bric-a-brac,

people have no use for.. amongst the smoldering embers of yesterday.

  • Show me one decent group around nowadays that can evoke the clear images those lines do?

And I don't mean the groups that sing at 4,000 mph or the ones banging on about bitches, cars, cash and all that other crap.

    Thanks for the comment!

  • I agree x

  • Such a haunting song..slightly depressing song tinged with gray skies Weller transported me as a boy to these places even though i grew up in the states..Thank yyou Jam.please for the love of G*d, reunite....

  • A one-off "oldschool" reunion gig would be nice, for sure. ;) Thanks for the comment.

  • Personally Wasteland has to be in

the top 5 songs on setting sons my

    favourite bitr are 0:52 - 1:16 also

    1:48 - 2:00. Great pictures very

good i like how you put Quaddy in

with The Jam not many do.

  • Aye - techincally different eras but Quadrophenia, The Jam and The Who pretty much dominated my music and dress styles throughout the 80's. Thanks for the comment mate!

  • this might be my favourite song by the jam.

:'( i wish i had been around to see them!!!

BIG QUESTION: on the line 'the holy coca-cola tins', is it HOLEY or HOLY? because my mum says it's holey because people used to shoot tins with rifles, but all the lyric sites i have checked say it's 'holy' as in, sacred.

    anyone know? Thanks!

    xxxxxxxx

  • Truthfully/? No idea ;) But I have checked as you have and found both "holy" and "holey". Best guess is that your mum is right. I used to shoot at tin cans before idiots ruined gun laws in the U.K.

Unless there is a religious link we are all missing, I'd say it's "holey"-as in being shot.

Thank you for the comment ;)

  • thank you so much! :)

    x

  • More than welcome ;)

  • Thank You

    Divad

    Vancouver, B.C.

I saw the Jam for the 1st and last time in 1982, at the Kerrsdale Arena-41st and Arbutus.

I didn't know who they were until then.

  • Did you enjoy the concert? Thanks for the comment!

  • Where has he been for 25 years? Good enough stuff, for sure, but nothing that breaks your heart like this does. The whole concept of the song - and then the final line: 'like our lives, exactly like our lives' - well that says it, doesn't it?

  • Good comment - probably something along the lines of "right band singing the right tracks at the right time".

Music nowadays is stale, bland and tuneless tbh, with very few exceptions - and those exceptions generally don't amke it 'cos the brainwashed "sheeple" out there listen to mass-produced and manufactured shit.

Saves them having to actually think, doesn't it? Thank you for your comment ;)

  • *make (Bloody keyboards ;p)

  • mint , saw em first time i was 11 in greenfield, oldham, never looked back, my fave is in the crowd , unbeatable

  • Nice! seeing them live is something else. Thanks for the comment mate.

  • A little gem of a song, saw em in London Sobell sports centre about 29 years ago 10 years old went wiv me mam dad, bor and his mates. About 7 years later we brought Bruce and the 100 men to the Welsh valleys went out after wiv him for a meal and a beer, absolute gent. Nice one son.

  • NIce! Cheers for the comment mate ;) Glad you liked the song.

  • Thanks....been waiting for this song....

  • More than welcome ;) Thanks for the comment.

  • great this tune's finally up on here.

reminds me of exactly where I grew up, spookily enough. There was a empty wasteland round the corner from our terraced house, and down the other end of the road were some hi-rise council flats, like Weller's "monolith monstrocities".

They've recently been pulled down, thank fuck. :)

  • Same here - you don't live in the South-East by any chance, do you? ;p

  • Nah, up north mate ;)

  • Darn it, I you beat me to putting this one up on YOUTUBE!

  • Sorry mate ;p I uploaded it 'cos there isn't a decent version up already. Stick another one up ;)

  • one of my all time favourites, cheers :-)

  • More than welcome ;)

  • rocking vid thanks for the upload geezar

  • No problem - couldn't find a decent/studio version on here ;p
