I've been a Jam/Weller fan since 1978 and he was always like this; he is basically a shy individual and particularly in his early career was very awkward around the media. In his own wordss 'I was a very serious young man' These days he seems to have lightened up a little, but the shyness is still there in interviews.
As an artist myself, I´m calmed by seeing that more artists that devote themself to their music are shy, just as I am. Artists dont need to be socially great, as long as they make great music/art/movies, whatever.
Weller: Musical genius- exceptional natural capacity of intellect, especially as shown in creative and original work in science, art, and music. Socially inept- without skill or aptitude for a particular task, generally awkward or clumsy; haplessly incompetent- like when dealing with a teenage pop music show. Everytime I've seen him in an interview he belittles the interviewer.
